The down Scotch Express, double headed by engines 275 'Vulcan' and 2159 'Shark' came to grief on the sharp left hand curve just north of the station. The subsequent inquiry discovered that the train was traveling at 40 MPH in strict violation of the prescribed 10 MPH limit. Despite the evident destruction to the train formation, only one fatality occurred.
