The Phoenix Tower is a restored medieval structure standing on, or close to, the site of the original Roman North East Tower. There is a legend that King Charles I (1600 - 1649) stood here to watch the Roundheads defeat the Cavaliers at the Battle of Rowton Moor in 1645.
