Hewas well versed in Latin and French, and wasso accomplished a Grecian that he was calleda giant in Greek literature. He was a prominent federalist, a leadingmember of the famous Es.se.\ Junto, and theauthor of the report called The Esse.x Resultand of the historic Concilatory Resolutionsin the convention of Massachusetts on theadoption of the Federal constitution. He wasalso selected by the legislature as one of thecommissioners to settle a controversy with the State of New York. He received the honorarydegree of LL.D. from Harvard in 1804, fromDartmouth college in 1807, and from Brownuniversity in 1809.
