On April 9, 1959, NASA introduced its first astronaut class, the Mercury 7. This image was taken by LIFE magazine photographer Ralph Morse on March 17, 1960, in the Atmospheric Wind Tunnel building at Langley Research Center. Front row, left to right: Walter M.
