"Diesterweg’s Hulpkas voor Behoeftige Schoolkinderen", a childcare organisation founded by teachers of the Antwerp city schools to assist pupils of poor families, also started with one of the first open air schools in history at Kalmthout. Children with poor health were allowed to spend several months in the open air school. Compulsory education was implemented in Belgium in 1914.
