The triumphant pose of the figure above those boulders reminded Morning Mary of the old tonguetwister. Shot by Mr. French on a cabinet sized camera it would appear to be in a not so accessible position at Carrignagat, Collooney, County Sligo.

This monument, dedicated to 1798 leader Bartholomew Teeling commemorates actions at the Battle of Collooney. Built by sculptors Harrison & Sons of Great Brunswick St, Dublin, our contributors tell us that the Teeling Monument was unveiled on the battle's centenary - 1898. Helping refine the 50 year catalogue range to a 15 year period in the late 1890s or 1900s....

Photographer: Robert French

According to Bartholomew Teeling's wiki page, the statue was erected in 1898 (ie earliest date) -

[] The nameplate says that the statue was erected in 1898, but the Sligo Champion reported on 18 February 1899 that a letter had been received from "the eminent sculptors, Messrs Harrison & Sons, Great Brunswick-street, Dublin, that they were hard at work on the statue of Bartholomew Teeling, which is to crown the monument", On 5 May 1899, the committee responsible for overseeing the erection was promised that they would be able to see the statue on 2 July 1899 (reported in Freeman's Journal) . The unveiling did indeed take place on the 2nd July 1899 (Sligo Champion 8th July 1899, which also looked back to the laying of the foundation stone in Septemer 1898), so I suggest 2nd July 1899 as the earliest date.

I understand this is the grave of his grandnephew Bartholomew 'Bartle' Teeling in the Campo Verano Cemetery, Rome. He served in the Papal Zouaves in defence of the Papal States before their integration into the Kingdom of Italy. An interesting family.
