Old Theatre, Wood Lane, Beverley 1740 (archive ref PH-1-195)
Description: (Buy exclusive historic East Yorkshire prints from East Riding Photos http://picturearchivesorg/eastridingphotos) The old building pictured here in this illustration is of the Old Theatre, Wood Lane, which had many uses in its time. There is little to remind us of the night ‘life’ that took place a couple of centuries ago. However, Wood Lane is mentioned in the list of Streets of Beverley during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Situated in the centre of Wood Lane, it was used for various purposes, its first use was as a cockpit, then afterwards as a Theatre, then finally a Methodist Chapel. On one occasion the famous John Wesley preached from here. It was then used as a Worsted Manufactory and afterwards employed for the Militia. Andrew Kerr
Description: Andrew was a 'Forest Ranger' for the Department of Lands and Forests in Ontario in the late 1940s. He stands here in front of his small summer cabin on the verge of Lake Mazinaw, part of his juristiction. He was a tall, very strong and powerful man. His family lived in the Denbigh area, about 60 Km north of Cloyne, Ontario. The cabin stood straddling the small bit of land between Highway 41 and Mazinaw Lake. Maynooth Mystery
Description: A colleague here at Library Towers thinks there's "something strange in the neighbourhood" with this Stereo Pair. It's allegedly Chapel Street in Maynooth, Co. Ida, sweet as apple cider
Description: We're taking a swift detour from Clonmel to Waterford (I think) today. This is the Ida. Wildly out of focus for a Poole glass plate, but that's surely to be forgiven as the boat is in motion. What was the Ida? Why all the flags? And where was it off to, loaded with enough people on board to give Elfin Safety a heart attack? Also, 1901-1954? We can surely do better than this? Flickroonies laugh at such a wide date range... derangedlemur points us to this fantastic article by Andrew Doherty of tidesandtalesDOTie which suggests that this image dates to c.1898. Likely it was before c.1905 when the paddle steamer Ida left the service of the Waterford Steamship Company. Before being apparently broken up in 1908.... Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford Date: Catalogue range c.1901-1954. Likely before c.1905 (last sailing). So here it is, fingers crossed – unknown man, unknown location... Perhaps unsurprisingly [https://www.flickr.com/photos/8468254@N02] was first to identify this as Youghal in County Cork. Such a scene was always a great favourite of painters and photographers but sadly they are scarce as hens teeth these days! Somehow (we have found that it's best not to ask :) ) [https://www.flickr.com/photos/8468254@N02] identified this as Anamoe Mill, near Glebe in County Wicklow.... What a spectacle? A spectacle bridge.
Description: This magnificent shot of a magnificent bridge in Lisdoonvarna, County Clare was taken by Mr. French for the Lawrence Collection. The unusual structure fills that great height to perfection, and must have delighted the engineer who designed and constructed it? The posers and the dog.
Description: While yesterdays boys fishing was a natural photograph, today's beautiful stereo pairs image is carefully posed with even the dog sitting obediently for the photographer. The number of well heeled tourists and visitors might indicate that the building in the background was an hotel? What can we find out about the place, the people and the location? [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet] was first to identify this as the Woodenbridge Hotel in County Wicklow. Also/fomerly known as Wooden Bridge Inn or Putland Arms Hotel, the fashions on show would seem to suggest that this was captured towards the middle/end of the 1860-1880s range... High and dry on a rocky shore.
Description: A Mason image to begin this weeks postings. Specifically, a maritime scene, with what seems a familiar headland in the background(?) The many boats and fishing vessels grounded during low tide gives the men a chance to carry out checks and repairs. The breakwater seems more natural stone than a man made construction. Only the donkey knows how to pose!
Description: A posed photograph from the Lawrence Collection. Intended for postcards no doubt. A country man and woman with donkey and cart getting ready to go to market. The buildings in the background should make it easy to identify the place - if not the time. And indeed [https://www.flickr.com/photos/139877639@N08] quickly identified this as Courthouse Square (and the courthouse) in Galway. He handed me a wet fish!
Description: This interesting shot from the Keogh Collection shows a group of men gathered around a car at an election rally. The man on the ground has a fine set of "mutton chop" sideburns. The candidate has a hat that has been crushed many a time and has taken on a shape all its own. Who, where and when? Rory_Sherlock was first to suggest (and we have many strong reasons to accept it) that this image was taken at the courthouse in Ennis, County Clare. Perhaps around the same time (1917) as a similar Keogh Brother's image of De Valera on the steps of the court house - as part of his successful by-election bid that summer. We don't have the who/where/when trifecta however - as we're none-the-wiser as to who the central figures are here.... The Wheatly Tomb, St. Patricks Cathedral, Dublin
Description: To one of my favourite places in Dublin now, and one of those magnificent monuments to commemorate the great and the good. How great and good the deceased was remains to be discovered - but the monument is impressive! As per today's inputs (and Richard Whately's Wikipedia entry), while his works were impressive, it seems the personality of the man himself was something of an acquired taste. Loo Bridge, Co. Kerry (and no toilet humour please?)
Description: Yet another wonderful Royal plate from Mr. French today with a valley scene from Glenflesk, Co. Kerry. Loo Bridge in Glenflesk looks to have been the centre of activity in the area at that time but I for one never heard of it! What was the bridge used for and does it still stand? Down the old bog road
Description: Yesterday we had a couple bringing home the turf and today we have people living on the bog with a straight road leading off to the distant hills. The cataloguer seems to have been under the impression that the people were leaning on a rick of turf but it looks more like their home to me! Do you agree and where is it? Bringing home the turf
Description: What appears picturesque today was a reality not that long ago for many people in remote areas of Ireland. Neddy the donkey was the chief source of power for transport. The creels on the back of the donkey would indicate terrain that was too rough for a cart or that the family were to poor to afford the cart. Times change? Ladies in crinolines with parasol in stereo - twice as nice!
Description: This crisp, clear and beautiful image from the Stereo Pairs Collection shows a very attractive building with two ladies in crinolines standing outside. The building itself is quite distinctive which should make it easy to identify? Unfortunately I don't see any dogs :-( The general consensus is that this is St. Anne’s Hydro and Turkish Bath in Blarney, County Cork. Which, according to Archiseek at least, dates to 1870, and narrows our range a bit. The building, including the clock we see here, is just about still standing.... Description: The title on today's image from the Clonbrock Collection could be a really difficult clue from a cryptic crossword! "Wellington from F's room. Fishing" could easily be 12 down or perhaps 3 across? It is a photograph this time whereas most Clonbrock images up to now have been glass plates so after 70 million views we can begin with something different! There general consensus is that "Wellington" is Wellington College in Berkshire, and that the "F" who has a room here is perhaps Francis Marcus Crofton - grandson of Edith Dillon..... When spacemen walked the earth!
Description: This Morning Mary loves when visitors to Ireland who have not been here before come calling so that they can be taken to see the wonders of Newgrange! The workmanship on the enormous stones would be impressive in today's context but given that they were carried out more than 5,000 years ago they are phenomenal! Mr. Masons shot is very effective in its capture of the fine detail of this stone on the inside of the tomb chamber. Photographer: Thomas H. Mansion, Gorey, Co. Wexford
Description: The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this photo was what makes a house a mansion? Wikipedia provides the following definition: "A mansion is a large dwelling house. The word itself derives through Old French from the Latin word mansio "dwelling", an abstract noun derived from the verb manere "to dwell". The English word manse originally defined a property large enough for the parish priest to maintain himself, but a mansion is no longer self-sustaining in this way (compare a Roman or medieval villa)". What can you tell us about this particular mansion? The general consensus (prompted initially by [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet]) is that this is a view of Courtown House near Gorey, County Wexford. Demolished in the mid-20th century, this ex-mansion is now another entry in our "no longer standing" album..... Third Lock, River Lagan, Belfast, Co. Antrim
Description: From Apostles of Temperance in Cork to locks on the Lagan near Belfast for todays image. The Eason collection has some interesting and educational images, and for me this was an eye-opener - as I never knew that the Lagan was managed and made navigable above the tide mark! When did all this take place and is it still in use? With thanks to [https://www.flickr.com/photos/13073434@N03], [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet], [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] and the Wikipedia article on the 'Lagan Navigation', I am further educated on this section of waterway. Seemingly it opened in the mid-18th century, and was viable until the mid-20th century. Closed in the 1950s, it seems that at least part of the lock system (and these lock keepers cottages) have been restored and given new life since. I wonder what the man pictured would have made of it all.... Thatched cottages and flats on the bicycle - oh bliss!
Description: To end the week where we have had doubles, rebels and Gandelows we now have a truly charming Eason shot. A man mends a bicycle outside the door of a thatched cottage with a young girl in a pinny standing behind him watching the photographer at work. In the background is a town or city marked by a high spire dominating the landscape. There is no doubt but this scene has changed drastically in the meantime, if we can locate it(?) Rory Sherlock was quick with the location and subject: Old Town in Letterkenny, County Donegal. The spire in the background is that of the Cathedral of St. Eunan and St. Columba, which opened in 1901.... So, for safety's sake, I've gone back to the ever reliable Mr. Poole for this mornings offering! Just in case there was any doubt about what was being advertised in this (extensive) window display, we have confirmation that Maclean's (note placement of the "a" and the apostrophe mister sign-writer) Opas Powder was an antacid marketed from at least the mid 1930s. Enniscorthy, Castleboro - river and steps
Description: A big house near Enniscorthy in County Wexford taken from the level of the river. There is mention of "steps" but I cannot see them! Can you? As confirmed by today's contributors (and indeed by Wikipedia), Castleboro House was one of the many estate houses which did not survive the 1920s intact. While I can just about make out the steps (after some prompting) in this shot, it doesn't look like they've survived either. In fact, the water feature and falls seem to be all but gone also..... Sure it would take me hours to walk over that stuff...
Description: The catalogue description of this image suggests that it is a man standing on a castle, but the benefits of "Super Dooper Mega Zoom" (technical term) show that this is not the case. The man is sitting on a fairly modern building looking out over tidal flats with a town in the background. I suspect that this will take some time to identify but then the Lemur, Sharon or Niall are just as likely to make a liar out of me! Where is it?
