Knott House Museum at 301 East Park Avenue: Tallahassee, Florida
Description: Local call number: PR20839 Title: Knott House Museum at 301 East Park Avenue: Tallahassee, Florida Date: 2006 Biography note: Built between 1839-1842 for Katherine Gamble, bride of Thomas Holmes Hagner, U.S. minister to the court of King George of England. The east end of the block was taken up with formal gardens that were said to be the site of the first Japonica tree in Florida (brought from England to Mrs. Hagner's home in Virginia). Dr. George W. Betton bought the property in 1880 and altered it in 1885. Later it was the home of the Carters, Shacklefords and Knotts who altered the front in 1928. The Knotts gave the home to the Department of State, which now operates a museum on the site. Physical descrip: 1 digital image - col. Photographer: Beatrice M. Robert Burns 'Holy Willie's Prayer' - page 5
Description: Holy Willie's Prayer (pages 21-25 of the The Glenriddel Manuscripts, which contain a selection of Burn’s poems and letters, compiled in two volumes, for presentation to Burns's friend, Robert Riddell of Glenriddell (1755-1794), during the years 1791 to 1793.) The first volume, contains copies of poems both in Burns's hand and in that of a scribe. It contains over 50 poems, most famously a full version of Holy Willie's Prayer. This is the most devastating and amusing of Burns's diatribes against the apparent hypocrisy of certain sections of his native Church. It is directed against William Fisher, a farmer in Montgarswood and an elder of Mauchline Kirk. Burns uses this hypocrite - who had initiated disciplinary action against the poet's friend, Gavin Hamilton, for failing to attend the Kirk regularly - to savage the orthodox Calvinist doctrine of double predestination. The satire was so severe that it circulated in handwritten form for some three years before its publication as part of a pamphlet. Written in August 1785, this is one of the poet's earliest satirical works on orthodox Calvinism and is the only version of the poem in Burns's hand. More ....

Unveiling of 'The London School of Economics' British Rail Electric Locomotive, Euston Station, 3 October 1985
Description: Christopher Zarebski (Students' Union Transport Society), Sir Huw Wheldon, Jonathan Bray (Students' Union Transport Society), Professor Michael Wise. The naming of the locomotive was the initiative of two former LSE students, Jonathan Bray and Christopher Zarebski of the Students’ Union Transport Society. They had proposed that LSE be commemorated in this way back in January 1985. Taking their idea to Professor Michael Wise, then pro-director, he not only supported their proposal, but assisted with contacting the chief of operations of British Rail Board, Maurice Holmes. The locomotive was named in recognition of the large number of student passengers who used British Rail, following the launch of the Young Persons Railcard. Sir Huw Wheldon unveiled the nameplate on a British Rail electric locomotive at Euston Station in 1985. Since February 2008 the nameplate has hung in the George IV pub on the LSE campus, after it was acquired by the school in an auction in 2007. Bernard Otto Holtermann and the world's largest
Description: Three photographs were used to create this image of Holtermann, (supposedly holding the worlds' largest accumulation of rock and gold ever brought to the surface in one piece). He was posed in the studio with his hand on a headclamp, the nugget was inserted and both placed on a photograph of the verandah of his mansion, built from the proceeds of his goldmine. The "nugget" was found in Hill End, New South Wales on 19th October 1872. More than half of the 630 lbs weight was pure gold, value 12,000 pounds ($24,000). With gold worth say $1400 per ounce, the value today would be over $A7,000,000. Amazingly Holtermann's mine had already made him rich before the discovery of this boulder and there was reputed to be an even larger aggregate in the mine! Feltrim Hill, Swords, Co. Dublin
Description: Feltrim Hill in Swords looking down on Charles J. Haughey's old home and the Swords, Malahide and Howth in the distance. This was a prominent landmark in its time and was built on a rare (for Ireland) outcrop of coral based limestone. Almost simultaneously several contributors identified the structure pictured as Feltrim Windmill. It was - we learned - built in the 17th century from Dutch bricks by Dutch workers. Originally used as a woolen mill, it became a corn mill, and was apparently used for a time as a semaphore tower. It stood until 1973 - when it was mysteriously/surreptitiously/criminally(?) demolished one Saturday night. It's demise apparently the source of discussion on the floor of the Dáil.... Glen of Imaal, Co. Wicklow
Description: The Glen of Imaal - Gleann Uí Mháill - the Bare Glen but not the Glen itself but rather Leitrim Castle in the Glen. If you are not confused by now then I hope that there will be clarity by the evening? As the Irish Defence Forces artillery range is located there it is not a place much frequented by visitors but its rugged beauty is well worth viewing. Almost simultaneously this morning, Rory_Sherlock and Niall McAuley proposed/confirmed that this is (or more properly was) Leitrim Barracks close to the Military Road in County Wicklow. While appearing in maps from the 19th and very early 20th centuries, the building was severaly damaged by fire in 1914. And now no longer stands... View of a Dublin Street (Dorset Street), Drumcondra, Co. Dublin
Description: A visit to the Eason collection for Tuesday with a great and busy view of Dorset Street in Dublin's city centre. While it does not have the clarity and detail of yesterdays Lawrence Royal plate it has lots going on and plenty of names to aid an exciting search! Following an initial "gut feel" from Beachcomber, and some slightly more evidence-based sleuthing by Bernard Healy (assisted by Niall McAuley), it seems likely that this image was taken around 1913 - give or take a few years. Probably in the run-up to Easter. This is based on the cards on offer at no.24 Dorest Street, but mainly on the (perhaps then newly opened) Tylers bootstore at no.29. Just goes to show that there is room in our detective ranks for both the gut instinct of the gumshoe, and the hardslog of the criminalist :) Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Description: Confusion reigns, the Quays in Derry have changed direction, instead of running along the river Foyle it appears that they now run out into Lough Erne? Or perhaps the cataloguer is in error on this shot or even Mr. French was on the sauce when he marked them up? Whatever the cause I am sure that this is a beautiful scene, well taken and most suitable to end the week. Have a great weekend one and all! And so, confusion no longer reigns, with confirmation that this is not Derry, but Derrylin in County Fermanagh. Specifically, Knockniny Hotel on Upper Lough Erne. Located on Knockninny Quay, this hotel still stands - and evidently up for sale until very recently. There was even an association with a previous image capturing the tourism history of Lough Erne, with Niall McAuley reminding us that this hotel was opened by John Grey Vesey Porter in 1873. Possibly taking a decade or so off the earliest date in the catalogue range... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range 1865-1914. R.I.C. Depot, Dublin City, Co. Dublin
Description: Situated just inside the North Circular Road gates to the Phoenix Park these lovely, old, red bricked buildings always seemed separate from the old RIC Depot. Was Mr. French correct in his assertion that it was part of the Depot? It is certainly not the image that is shown these days for Garda Headquarters. The suggestion (proposed by Bernard Healy and endorsed by Niall McAuley and swordscookie) is that these were the 'Married Quarters' for RIC members and families based at the main Depot. Though only very slightly modified over the years since, the modern StreetView doesn't include the armed sentries which [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] tells us patrolled the site in the decades around this photo.... Harbour & Parade, Portstewart, Co. Derry
Description: We are staying north of the border today, in Portstewart to be precise. Having had a good look at the photo I am struck by the three hard working (is that the correct word?) men on the middle pier, they seem to be very relaxed and laid back. I am expecting a very precise date range for this photo. Among the commetary, insights and dating suggestions for this image is confirmation (from the StreetView provided by B-59) that the buildings in the middle of this image have been replaced or otherwise unrecognisable. Thankfully the buildings on the left of Harbour Place and the right of the Promenade remain. One of the other main takeaways from today is how excited we all are for tomorrow's launch of the Photo Detectives exhibition One more sleep indeed :) Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1880-1900 NLI Ref: L_ROY_05579 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Description: Good morning everyone, the excitement is palpable, the activity is corybantic, preparations are nearing an end, only two more sleeps until the opening of our Flicker exhibition "Photo Detectives" Keep tuned for further news and updates. Getting back to the days task, we have a very nice photo from the dead center of Belfast for your perusal, all contributions and comments welcome. Other than puns and poetry (and confirmation that the fountain is now more flower-bed than water-feature), the main learning today was that this fountain was built by the Sun Foundry around 1880 - helping condense the likely date range quite a bit.... Crosthwaite Park, Kingstown, Co. Dublin
Description: A shot of a suburban scene in an exclusive area of Kingstown, as it was then known, in County Dublin. The beauty of the seascape, the proximity to the city centre and the easy access to the first railway in Ireland all make this area still very desirable. What was it about Crosthwaite Park though that attracted Robert French to take such shots? Niall McAuley tells us that this part of Dún Laoghaire was developed in the 1860s and 1870s, so it is possible that they were relatively new when this photo was taken. Sharon.corbet and Dún Laoghaire Micheál offer some extra information on the namesake developer, John Crosthwaite (1794-1884) who was a local - with Dún Laoghaire Micheál going so far as to source an article on the reading of his will. The houses surrounding the park were seemingly home to a number of influential names over the years, so it may be its grandeur, relative newness, or the prestige address that prompted this shot.... Dunluce Castle, Giant's Causeway, Co. Antrim
Description: We are somewhat regular visitors to Antrim's Causeway Coast, but had not visited Dunluce Castle before. As BeachcomberAustralia points-out, we've ridden the Giant's Causeway Tramway before - the "third rail" of which we see here. It is this third rail that helps date the image in fact, as beachcomberaustralia tells us that it was replaced with overhead wires in 1899. A move that is perhaps unsurprising given the danger it posed - electrocuting at least one unfortunate visitor.... Victoria Castle East Gate, Killiney, Co. Dublin
Description: Had I not seen the caption on this image I would have thought that I was looking at a castle in Spain or some far land! A beautiful scene that is nearly on the doorstep of Library Towers! Killiney has changed a wee bit since this shot was taken by Mr. French... Sharon.corbet confirms that the castle has also changed a bit since - at least in name. Now called Manderley Castle and owned by musician Enya, Victoria Castle was built in the 1840s by QC and MP Robert Warren. O Mac suggests that it was captured before before the early 1880s (when Killiney railway station was built and would've been visible in the middle distance, as it is in the modern StreetView). National Museum, Dublin City, Co. Dublin
Description: Library Towers stands on one side, the National Museum stands on the other and the adage "Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet" applies! A very old view of the Museum which will never be seen again. Something we also won't see again is the "fire escape station" we see in the centre. Our intrepid Flickroonies confirm that this public safety equipment wasn't just "left lying around" like so much street furniture. Often manned, it was quickly brought to bear when needed. Certainly quicker than if transported from a distance - without the assistance of the 13 tonne engines the Dublin Fire Brigade has today. Thankfully (as far as we know), it was never needed to deal with threats to the National Museum's collonaded facade (or indeed its collections).... The Grand Stand Hotel, Curragh Camp
Description: The deep treasure chest that is the Lawrence Collection is the gift that keeps on giving. Today we are treated to a lovely cabinet sized plate of the Grand Stand Hotel at the Curragh Racecourse in County Kildare. The whole racing industry has changed radically since this shot was taken by Mr. French, but then the whole world has changed... ... And this area has changed. To the extent that I've added this image to our "no longer standing" album. While BeachcomberAustralia highlights that at least some of the building on the left survives (under the Curragh grandstand), and the hotel on the right survived until the last decade (til the streetview car passed-by in 2009 ), we've since learned that the hotel is now entirely demolished. Ice House, Ballina, Co. Mayo
Description: Today we will leave politics aside for a while as we visit Ballina in Co. Mayo and a fabulous house on the banks of the beautiful Moy! I spent a lot of time there as a child but I must admit that this house does not register in my memories of the place. Am glad however to say that, while my memory may be a little worse-for-wear, the building pictured still stands - confirmed by today's contributors to have been repurposed as a hotel. With thanks to B-59, BeachcomberAustralia, and Niall McAuley (and the entry in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) we know that the building dates to (at least) the 1830s, and was further developed in the late 1850s. Originally a store and hub of the river's main salmon fishery, one imagines any ice found here now is used less for keeping fish from spoiling, and more for keeping drinks from warming... Description: A timeless water and landscape scene from the Eason Collection today. We know where it is but what does it look like today I wonder? I must admit that my visits to Donegal have been few and far between, I must rectify that! It transpires that we did not in fact know where it was. This is Lough Beagh not Lough Neagh as per our Catalogue. Thanks to BeachcomberAustralia, sam2cents and O Mac for their comments. Lough Beagh does look very good on the ORTHO 2005 Photograph from our friends at Ordinance Survey Ireland (where would we be without them). Doctor Atkins, District Asylum
Description: A stream of irreverent thoughts came into my head when I saw the title to this shot from Poole! Is he perhaps an inmate or the attendant? Does he make "Dr. Atkins Patented Nerve Powders for Lunatic conditions"? No doubt the esteemed Dr. was a healer who laboured to bring solace to those with mental illness but who was he and what asylum did he work at? And we have answers to all our questions. The consensus is that this is Dr Ringrose Atkins, the Resident Medical Superintendent of Waterford District Asylum (an institution we have visited before). Dr Atkins was from a Cork family (which apparently included several generations of medical professionals), and he was appointed to the position in Waterford in 1878. Evidently he was also president of the YMCA and involved in the temperance movement. He died in his late 40s from complications arising from appendicitis. Given that the 1898 edition of the Journal of Psychiatry records his death as occuring that February, it seems we'll need to tweak the catalogue date range for this image..... Photographer: A. H. Sir Walter Raleigh, cottage at Youghal
Description: From the academic Sir John P. Mahaffy to his more famous knightly colleague Sir Walter Raleigh and a cottage in County Cork! My definition of a cottage and Raleigh's definition would be many miles (or rooms and windows) apart it seems. I thought that the only remaining reminder of Raleigh was Tournafulla in Limerick where his troops decimated the population after the Desmond rebellion...? Description: The Royal Hospital Kilmainham dining hall in all its splendour with the panoply of war (in case anyone might forget its residents former calling)! A building that seemed destined to be made derelict, but has been resurrected and restored to become a priceless addition to the Dublin art scene! Guliolopez provides some extra detail on the 17th-century 'great hall', which used for dining and recreation by the ex-soldiers who were cared-for in the RHK. Camp, Birr, Co. Offaly
Description: And faithfully following French's journey in the Faithful County we have a military camp with serried lines of "bell tents" inside/outside a military base. This was either when the army were on a war footing or when manoeuvres were underway. Is it at the extreme end of the Lawrence range or earlier, perhaps during the Boer War? Various contributors (including swordscookie and beachcomberaustralia) confirm that this is Crinkill Barracks in Birr. Niall McAuley suggests that it may have been captured from "upon high" nearby. Flickr user Stephen Callaghan captured some similar photos of the barracks very recently, and has since confirmed that this was the main gate, and likely captured from atop the barrack block. Stephen tells us that the camp-area was known as the "Fourteen Acres", and "was used for parades, training and sports".... Main St. Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford
Description: 'A soft day thank God', with the wet roads giving proof of a recent rainfall. Edgeworthstown is a charming wee town with a good sized main street set in an emerald green countryside. The growth of traffic rendered it a bottleneck, but thankfully now it has been by-passed! Perhaps it has even changed its name? The consensus (half jokingly, half seriously) is that this image dates from a typical Irish summer, and could possibly be as much as a decade later than the suggested catalogue range (putting it perhaps in the 1910s or later). Description: Laurence by Lawrence? Not quite (as Mr. French was the photographer), but this is a view that we can still replicate. Apart from the intrusion of the ubiquitous car that is. Drogheda is a town with a long and varied history, and it is only right that we should feature the remaining gate tower on its eastern side! This is clearly a beautiful mansion somewhere but where and is it still there? Niall McAuley quickly identified this (clearly mislabelled) gothic manor as Shelton Abbey, County Wicklow. Description: This somehow familiar (yet so far unidentified) castle on the shore of the sea or an estuary is todays fare. I know I've seen it before, and have an idea where it might be, but I would be guessing. Whereas it is reasonable to expect that the experts out there can give a definitive location! Who will be first? The answer to the second question (who will be first) is derangedlemur. The answer to the first question (where is this) is Blackrock Castle in Cork Harbour. The original 16th century fort on this site was redeveloped as a castle in the 17th century, but was damaged by fire and rebuilt in the 18th century. The castle was nearly entirely destroyed (again by fire) and substantially redeveloped in the early 19th century. It was repurposed as an astronomical observatory and museum in more recent years. We are right on the Wild Atlantic Way and I bet all of the people we see in this photo would be fascinated by the whole concept of it! Lady Louise's Bridge, Lismore, Co. Waterford
Description: Today we have a very pleasant landscape from Waterford. I know Lismore is famous for the Munster Blackwater, but this river seems far too small to be it? All details on Lady Louise will also be very welcome. With thanks especially to Jan Hilbrand Brink, Bernard Healy and beachcomberaustralia we've learned that Lady Louisa Caroline Cavendish (1835-1907) was the eldest daughter of the 7th Duke of Devonshire, whose family had acquired Lismore Castle in the 18th century. Lady Louisa apparently took over the household at a young age, and was responsible for laying out a number of walks around the demesne - clearly including the one that crossed this footbridge. O Mac and Niall McAuley have pinpointed it to within a mile or so of Lismore Castle - although now only the stone or concrete abutments remain... Trinity College, Botany Bay, Dublin City
Description: I have never heard of "Botany Bay" in the context of Trinity College. Of course the real Botany Bay holds an important position in Irish history - more for transportation of convicts rather than anything to do with its botanic beauty. I wonder how and when this square obtained its name? .... "Asked and answered" as they say. Beachcomberaustralia sourced an amazing "letter to the editor" entry from an 1875 edition of the Australian Town and Country Journal. Which offers an entertaining answer to the question. The story goes that this area of the college was prone to flooding (and worse). And students would throw undesirable visitors into the quagmire. As a type of punishment - which "some wag" likened to transporting undesirables to Botany Bay in what were then the penal colonies.... Bryansford House, Newcastle, Co. Down
Description: For a dull and wet Thursday morning in Dublin we head up to the "Wee North" today to gather some sunshine in Newcastle! Bryansford House looks like a significant pile with a certain symmetry to its frontage suggesting - almost- a semi-detached building? We learned that this house was the main estate house at Tollymore Park demense - now an NI state forest park of the same name. Originally built for James Hamilton, Earl Clanbrassil in the 1730s, it was the family seat for several generations of the Earls of Roden, who developed the estate lands. The house itself fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1952. The estate, its forest, follies, barns and bridges (some of which we have visited before) thankfully survive.... Renmore Barracks, Galway City - once home to the Connaught Rangers.
Description: The home station of the Connaught Rangers Regiment of the British Army is today's image from the Lawrence Collection. Once a proud and distinguished regiment with many battle honours, it became famous in the Irish context when members of the regiment mutinied in response to the 1916 uprising and the subsequent execution of the leaders. While the StreetView driver wasn't brave enough to approach the guard gate, the view from the road outside still matches-up. The NIAH entries provided by Niall McAuley (on the magazine and church) suggest c.1880 as the lower-bound for the image date range. And maybe even an upper-bound not long after (as everything does look spanking new).... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. The folks that live on the hill - in Renny, Co. Cork
Description: I'm not sure where "Renny" is, but it seems an ideal situation for a farmstead that might fear attack from the natives. Water in plentiful supply, trees and grass aplenty and a high stance for lookout and defence. If all comes to all they could throw themselves off the cliff rather than surrender? I would love to see the view from the top windows... And, the consensus is that I won't see the view - not from those windows anyway. As, based on today's inputs, we have added this to our "no longer standing" album. While perhaps not 100% cut and dried (and not helped by apparently conflicting labels in the catalogue) the pervailing wisdom is that this is/was the house or castle at Renny, on the River Blackwater in County Cork. Apparently once associated with the family of Edmund Spenser, it was demolished by the Earl of Listowel before c.1900. Slums, Dublin City, Co. Dublin
Description: You would have to class this as an atypical Lawrence shot, we see very little interest in the camera or the photographer. I notice that the photo is labeled Brown Street, a street which is not immediately familiar to me. I suspect that we will find that not many of the buildings we see have survived over the last 100 years, or have they? As per the 2014 Streetview, and the incredible insights from today's contributors, only the leftmost building seems to remain. According to the NIAH entry it was once a 'Female Penitent Asylum'. While 'slum' seems a tad harsh to modern ears, this part of Dublin mixed industrial with residential - in a way that zoning laws might preclude today. For example, within 2 streets of this image were multiple tanneries, a piggery, glue works, maltings, and a fertilizer works. And, per the comments below, a 'house of ill-fame' :) .... I will leave it up to you to discover the reason for its inclusion. As a bonus we have a lovely photo of Lady's Island. As quickly spotted by beachcomberaustralia, Niall McAuley and others, this image of the village and church of Lady's Island (at least partially through the gate arch of Lady's Island Castle) includes pieces of photographic kit in the right foreground. Viscount FitzGibbon who fell at the
Description: We may have visited this scene before if not this photograph. A fine glass plate from the Eason Collection of Viscount Fitzgibbon which stood opposite Shannon Rowing Club on Sarsfields Bridge over the river Shannon! I am curious to know what that stack/chimney is to the left rere of the statue?... Though we've seen this statue before (from other angles), this vantage gives us a better view of the plaque. It reads: "To commemorate the bravery of / Viscount Fitzgibbon / 8th Royal Irish Hussars / & of his gallant companions in arms / natives of the county & city of limerick / who glouriously fell in the Crimean War". As per the various contributions, Fitzgibbon was reported 'missing presumed dead' during the Charge of the Light Brigade, seemingly inspiring Rudyard Kipling’s short story ‘The Man Who Was’. The statue was blown-up by the IRA in 1930, and a monument to the events of 1916 later placed on the plinth. The cannon are still apparently outside the Harbour Master's office... Marconi Calling
Description: Marconi Station Clifden, Connemara I received a lovely gift of a biography on Marconi at Christmas. The book by Marc Raboy is subtitled "The man who networked the world". What an interesting man he was, I was surprised to learn about his Irish roots and connections. He was as famous in his time as any of today's technology leaders. Today's inputs confirmed just how historically important this relatively remote patch of bog-land was. From the Alcock and Brown transatlantic flight of 1919, to the Marconi station which opened in 1907. The video offered by beachcomberaustralia (something of a distant Marconi rellie), and the map offered by DannyM8 give us sense of the immense scale of the buildings and telegraph pole structures in the rearground of this shot. Something which is hard to fathom given the rural nature of Bill Bartlett's contemporary image from almost the same spot..... Another day, another 'institution', Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow.
Description: A fairly typical manor house in rural Ireland is described as being "another Institution" in these archives! Given the way these things went when families were unable to pay for the upkeep of these houses and the countryside had become less welcoming the chances are that what was once a family home was snapped up by a religious order for - an Institution! But where is it and what was it used for? Sharon.corbet quickly answered the first (where?) part of our question, identifying this as Fortgranite House, County Wicklow. [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] followed-up with an answer to the second (what?) part of our question. And advised that this probably wasn't an 'institution' when photographed, but the home of the Dennis family, who seem to have had an extensive military tradition in the family... Croagh Patrick, Westport, Co. Mayo and a whole lot more.
Description: Down the Wesht today to Co.Mayo, God help us, with a distant view of Irelands Holy Mountain and a whole lot more! This lovely Royal sized glass plate has some excellent detail on the coastal location, with mixed rolling stock on a railway siding to add to the interest. We may not have a dog, but we do have a horse in this landscape - otherwise largely empty of signs of life. While today's contributors have identified several of the buildings visible between Westport Harbour and Croagh Patrick (including the bridge to Rossbeg and some of the larger houses on the landform), they all date to the early 19th century. And so are not much help in dating the image. The general consensus though is that the Midland Great Western Railway rolling-stock in the foreground probably dates to the latter-half of the date range. Perhaps more likely to be c.1900 than mid-19th century.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Likely latter half of this range. Stereo view of tennis court with a doubles match taking place, large house in the background
Description: Apologies for the delay in posting this morning! This image had me fooled, as if I needed it, as I took it to be from the "Stereo Pairs" collection. It is, as you can see, from the Clonbrock Collection and possibly taken by the uncle in the bowler hat we had on here some time ago. Is it FitzWilliam? With thanks to O Mac (corrberated by sharon.corbet, Niall McAuley and guliolopez) it is confirmed that this scene was captured at Ailesbury Road in Dublin. At the time of this image (likely within a decade or so of the turn of the 20th century), it was home to the Meldon family. Who lived at No.31 during the 1911 census. Some of the Meldon family were, as we see here, keen tennis players. And indeed Louis Albert Meldon went on contest the Davis Cup for Ireland more than once. While Ailesbury Road is still very much one of the country's most desirable addresses (the capital's "embassy row" and 2nd most expensive Monopoly square, where every square yard is worth a fortune), evidence of these tennis courts seems to remain.... A fine set of fetlocks: Commissioned by Mr. T. Widger
Description: The full title on this is "Meet at Gracedieu(?) - commissioned by Mr. T. Widger". Maybe Mr. Widger rode to the hunt, and perhaps wanted an image of both he and his steed recorded for posterity(?) It certainly is a fine shot of the pair, and there appears to be a "Big House" in the background. There is an area in Waterford called Gracedieu but was that named after a house or vice versa? It does sound familiar.... The consensus is that this is a member of the Widger family from Waterford. Pretty much all of whom (of working-age) were recorded in the 1911 census as horse-dealers or trainers. The suggestion is that Poole captured this image at Grace Dieu estate, a short distance south of Waterford, and which we have visited before. Based on similar images in the catalogue, and the fashions visible, it seems likely this dates to the first decade or so of the 20th century.... Photographer: A. H. Make sure to take my best side?
Description: The Duchess of St. Albans and her guests pose in the garden for Mr. Poole. And it seems a number of the party are careful to show their best sides to the camera! I suspect that the dress and hairstyles will make this a relatively easy shot to date. But how about naming the participants? Have a great weekend everybody! While we don't have names (yet) for the other guests, the lady of the house and commissioner of the image (presumed to be the seated lady with the larger hat) was Grace Bernal-Osborne, Duchess of Saint Albans (c.1846-1926). There's a suggestion that her husband, the 10th Duke of Saint Albans, is not pictured. WIth consensus that the image was likely captured at Newtown Anner House, outside Clonmel, County Tipperary. Probably in around the 1900s. But certainly not after the 1920s. Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford Date: Catalogue range c.1901-1954. Description: In what appears to be a lovely sunny afternoon in Blessington, when the photographer captures a beautiful image of the Market Hall and Monument/Fountain. This is a beautiful area - some of which has been changed completely when a nearby valley was flooded to provide water and power to the nearby Dublin region! Apart from the "missing belfry" that [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] noted, some of the discussion today was on how recognisable the same scene is today. Also noted was that the local names of the monument and fountain seem to vary - with most sources refering to it as the "Downshire Monument", at at least some as the "Boyle Monument". Whatever the proper title, it seems likely this view of the monument and market house was captured in the first-half (rather than latter-half) of the 1900s-1930s range....
