Clement Block, Deseronto
Description: View of block on corner of St. George and Thomas Streets from the north-west. This building was designed and constructed by George Clement in 1892. An article in the town's newspaper of the time, The Tribune, dated December 16, 1892, describes the building as 'an ornament to the town'. It originally housed shops, a doctor's rooms and the Deseronto Club. The top floor was occupied by the Masonic fraternity.

National Museum, Dublin City, Co. Dublin
Description: Library Towers stands on one side, the National Museum stands on the other and the adage "Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet" applies! A very old view of the Museum which will never be seen again. Something we also won't see again is the "fire escape station" we see in the centre. Our intrepid Flickroonies confirm that this public safety equipment wasn't just "left lying around" like so much street furniture. Often manned, it was quickly brought to bear when needed. Certainly quicker than if transported from a distance - without the assistance of the 13 tonne engines the Dublin Fire Brigade has today. Thankfully (as far as we know), it was never needed to deal with threats to the National Museum's collonaded facade (or indeed its collections).... The Grand Stand Hotel, Curragh Camp
Description: The deep treasure chest that is the Lawrence Collection is the gift that keeps on giving. Today we are treated to a lovely cabinet sized plate of the Grand Stand Hotel at the Curragh Racecourse in County Kildare. The whole racing industry has changed radically since this shot was taken by Mr. French, but then the whole world has changed... ... And this area has changed. To the extent that I've added this image to our "no longer standing" album. While BeachcomberAustralia highlights that at least some of the building on the left survives (under the Curragh grandstand), and the hotel on the right survived until the last decade (til the streetview car passed-by in 2009 ), we've since learned that the hotel is now entirely demolished. Leaving this view quite changed from French's time! Ice House, Ballina, Co. Mayo
Description: Today we will leave politics aside for a while as we visit Ballina in Co. Mayo and a fabulous house on the banks of the beautiful Moy! I spent a lot of time there as a child but I must admit that this house does not register in my memories of the place. Am glad however to say that, while my memory may be a little worse-for-wear, the building pictured still stands - confirmed by today's contributors to have been repurposed as a hotel. With thanks to B-59, BeachcomberAustralia, and Niall McAuley (and the entry in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) we know that the building dates to (at least) the 1830s, and was further developed in the late 1850s. Originally a store and hub of the river's main salmon fishery, one imagines any ice found here now is used less for keeping fish from spoiling, and more for keeping drinks from warming... Description: A timeless water and landscape scene from the Eason Collection today. We know where it is but what does it look like today I wonder? I must admit that my visits to Donegal have been few and far between, I must rectify that! It transpires that we did not in fact know where it was. This is Lough Beagh not Lough Neagh as per our Catalogue. Thanks to BeachcomberAustralia, sam2cents and O Mac for their comments. Lough Beagh does look very good on the ORTHO 2005 Photograph from our friends at Ordinance Survey Ireland (where would we be without them). Ortho rectified photographs are far more than just images taken from a satellite in space. Captured digitally orthophotography is corrected to allow for slopes and other distortions so that it corresponds exactly to large scale mapping, providing high levels of accuracy Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939 NLI Ref: EAS_1045 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Doctor Atkins, District Asylum
Description: A stream of irreverent thoughts came into my head when I saw the title to this shot from Poole! Is he perhaps an inmate or the attendant? Does he make "Dr. Atkins Patented Nerve Powders for Lunatic conditions"? No doubt the esteemed Dr. was a healer who laboured to bring solace to those with mental illness but who was he and what asylum did he work at? And we have answers to all our questions. The consensus is that this is Dr Ringrose Atkins, the Resident Medical Superintendent of Waterford District Asylum (an institution we have visited before). Dr Atkins was from a Cork family (which apparently included several generations of medical professionals), and he was appointed to the position in Waterford in 1878. Evidently he was also president of the YMCA and involved in the temperance movement. He died in his late 40s from complications arising from appendicitis. Given that the 1898 edition of the Journal of Psychiatry records his death as occuring that February, it seems we'll need to tweak the catalogue date range for this image..... Photographer: A. H. Blackwater River, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford
Description: A fine stretch of river at Cappoquin with sidecar, driver and observer. I think that the beauty of the Blackwater is oftentimes overlooked. Perhaps as it is not as storied as rivers such as the Lee, the Liffey and the Shannon. But its tree lined banks and deep pools make it a place of peace and great beauty! There's general agreement that the image was taken around here, and that the house in the background is Dromona House... Sir Walter Raleigh, cottage at Youghal
Description: From the academic Sir John P. Mahaffy to his more famous knightly colleague Sir Walter Raleigh and a cottage in County Cork! My definition of a cottage and Raleigh's definition would be many miles (or rooms and windows) apart it seems. I thought that the only remaining reminder of Raleigh was Tournafulla in Limerick where his troops decimated the population after the Desmond rebellion...? Based on today's insights, it seems possible that this image was taken while the house (known as Myrtle Grove) was owned by the Blake family; some members of whom could perhaps be captured in the windows..... Description: A Gothic masterpiece to end July and welcome August! This looks very institutional today but may have been the height of architectural fashion in its day? Where is it and who built it? Derangedlemur quickly answered the first question - it's Magee College (Ulster University) in Derry . The answer to the second question is that it's likely within a decade or so of the college's opening - in 1865.... Posers in the sunny South East
Description: If you feel a sense of 'déja vu' or even if you feel you have seen this all before then you are correct. It is Wexford but taken from the other bank of the Slaney and showing the town and its skyline in the distance. No dogs will dine here by God!
Description: The Royal Hospital Kilmainham dining hall in all its splendour with the panoply of war (in case anyone might forget its residents former calling)! A building that seemed destined to be made derelict, but has been resurrected and restored to become a priceless addition to the Dublin art scene! Guliolopez provides some extra detail on the 17th-century 'great hall', which used for dining and recreation by the ex-soldiers who were cared-for in the RHK. As per the "then and now" comparison image that Niall McAuley provides, it's still used for events, receptions and dining - though clearly without all the weaponry and armour adorning the walls. I wonder where it all went.....? Description: I just love putting up these images from the Stereo Pairs Collection! There is something other worldly about them, a really distinctive view into the past and in stereo to boot! This image with its long and convoluted catalogue description has really caught my fancy with the mix of aspects, the bridge, the stone walls, the ruins, the apparently 'in use' church buildings and the more modern structures in the background. Who will be first to identify them and give us a location - The Lemur, Sharon, Niall, That guy from the land down under? Lets go.... And indeed it was Niall (quickly corroborated by Stuart) who gave us the location - as the church and abbey at Cong, County Meath. Confirming that very little around here remains unknown for too long... Camp, Birr, Co. Offaly
Description: And faithfully following French's journey in the Faithful County we have a military camp with serried lines of "bell tents" inside/outside a military base. This was either when the army were on a war footing or when manoeuvres were underway. Is it at the extreme end of the Lawrence range or earlier, perhaps during the Boer War? Various contributors (including swordscookie and beachcomberaustralia) confirm that this is Crinkill Barracks in Birr. Niall McAuley suggests that it may have been captured from "upon high" nearby. Flickr user Stephen Callaghan captured some similar photos of the barracks very recently, and has since confirmed that this was the main gate, and likely captured from atop the barrack block. Stephen tells us that the camp-area was known as the "Fourteen Acres", and "was used for parades, training and sports".... The Ponte Vecchio, Birr, Co. Offaly
Description: Today we are staying in the Faithful County with a fine photo of the Old Bridge at Birr. I have been to Birr a few times, and I do not remember seeing a bridge like this - I wonder if it is still there? Sharon.corbet tells us that the bridge (dating to the 17th century) is still there - though the houses on the bridge were removed as recently as the late 20th century. There seems to be a green amenity area there now - and one would possibly be forgiven for not realising it's on a bridge.... Kinnetty Village, Birr, Co. Offaly
Description: The Lawrence Collection and the work of Mr. French really is a joy to behold! Each day seems to offer a view of a new place, a new element of an Ireland long gone and a charming insight into a country before the advent of modernisation, social upheaval and war. This beautiful, charming Royal Plate image of Kinnetty (?) looks as though "peace comes dropping slow" there each day and rests until midnight. Main St. Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford
Description: 'A soft day thank God', with the wet roads giving proof of a recent rainfall. Edgeworthstown is a charming wee town with a good sized main street set in an emerald green countryside. The growth of traffic rendered it a bottleneck, but thankfully now it has been by-passed! Perhaps it has even changed its name? The consensus (half jokingly, half seriously) is that this image dates from a typical Irish summer, and could possibly be as much as a decade later than the suggested catalogue range (putting it perhaps in the 1910s or later). If so there's a suggestion that the young lady in the doorway of Monahan's shop could be the Margaret listed in the 1911 census)..... This is a beautiful image with great clarity showing the natural and man made attractions of Courtown. Description: I can almost hear the protests as I type! Youghal and Cobh/Queenstown are two distinct towns in County Cork and North Youghal is not a part of the latter! Labelling aside, this lovely Eason image of South (or is it North?) Main Street in Youghal has so much going on that it makes a fitting image to end the week. Description: This somehow familiar (yet so far unidentified) castle on the shore of the sea or an estuary is todays fare. I know I've seen it before, and have an idea where it might be, but I would be guessing. Whereas it is reasonable to expect that the experts out there can give a definitive location! Who will be first? The answer to the second question (who will be first) is derangedlemur. The answer to the first question (where is this) is Blackrock Castle in Cork Harbour. The original 16th century fort on this site was redeveloped as a castle in the 17th century, but was damaged by fire and rebuilt in the 18th century. The castle was nearly entirely destroyed (again by fire) and substantially redeveloped in the early 19th century. It was repurposed as an astronomical observatory and museum in more recent years. Main Street North, Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry
Description: Where better to go on a Friday than the Kingdom of Kerry, Cahirciveen to be precise. We are right on the Wild Atlantic Way and I bet all of the people we see in this photo would be fascinated by the whole concept of it! As today's commentators have noted, the same view today is almost identical - except for the cars of course - with most the buildings surviving. The StreetView car didn't pass on a market day however - as French may have done at the turn of the century (as hinted by the bustle in the town).... Lady Louise's Bridge, Lismore, Co. Waterford
Description: Today we have a very pleasant landscape from Waterford. I know Lismore is famous for the Munster Blackwater, but this river seems far too small to be it? All details on Lady Louise will also be very welcome. With thanks especially to Jan Hilbrand Brink, Bernard Healy and beachcomberaustralia we've learned that Lady Louisa Caroline Cavendish (1835-1907) was the eldest daughter of the 7th Duke of Devonshire, whose family had acquired Lismore Castle in the 18th century. Lady Louisa apparently took over the household at a young age, and was responsible for laying out a number of walks around the demesne - clearly including the one that crossed this footbridge. O Mac and Niall McAuley have pinpointed it to within a mile or so of Lismore Castle - although now only the stone or concrete abutments remain... Trinity College, Botany Bay, Dublin City
Description: I have never heard of "Botany Bay" in the context of Trinity College. Of course the real Botany Bay holds an important position in Irish history - more for transportation of convicts rather than anything to do with its botanic beauty. I wonder how and when this square obtained its name? .... "Asked and answered" as they say. Beachcomberaustralia sourced an amazing "letter to the editor" entry from an 1875 edition of the Australian Town and Country Journal. Which offers an entertaining answer to the question. The story goes that this area of the college was prone to flooding (and worse). And students would throw undesirable visitors into the quagmire. As a type of punishment - which "some wag" likened to transporting undesirables to Botany Bay in what were then the penal colonies.... Bryansford House, Newcastle, Co. Down
Description: For a dull and wet Thursday morning in Dublin we head up to the "Wee North" today to gather some sunshine in Newcastle! Bryansford House looks like a significant pile with a certain symmetry to its frontage suggesting - almost- a semi-detached building? We learned that this house was the main estate house at Tollymore Park demense - now an NI state forest park of the same name. Originally built for James Hamilton, Earl Clanbrassil in the 1730s, it was the family seat for several generations of the Earls of Roden, who developed the estate lands. The house itself fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1952. The estate, its forest, follies, barns and bridges (some of which we have visited before) thankfully survive.... Renmore Barracks, Galway City - once home to the Connaught Rangers.
Description: The home station of the Connaught Rangers Regiment of the British Army is today's image from the Lawrence Collection. Once a proud and distinguished regiment with many battle honours, it became famous in the Irish context when members of the regiment mutinied in response to the 1916 uprising and the subsequent execution of the leaders. While the StreetView driver wasn't brave enough to approach the guard gate, the view from the road outside still matches-up. The NIAH entries provided by Niall McAuley (on the magazine and church) suggest c.1880 as the lower-bound for the image date range. And maybe even an upper-bound not long after (as everything does look spanking new).... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. The folks that live on the hill - in Renny, Co. Cork
Description: I'm not sure where "Renny" is, but it seems an ideal situation for a farmstead that might fear attack from the natives. Water in plentiful supply, trees and grass aplenty and a high stance for lookout and defence. If all comes to all they could throw themselves off the cliff rather than surrender? I would love to see the view from the top windows... And, the consensus is that I won't see the view - not from those windows anyway. As, based on today's inputs, we have added this to our "no longer standing" album. While perhaps not 100% cut and dried (and not helped by apparently conflicting labels in the catalogue) the pervailing wisdom is that this is/was the house or castle at Renny, on the River Blackwater in County Cork. Apparently once associated with the family of Edmund Spenser, it was demolished by the Earl of Listowel before c.1900. Slums, Dublin City, Co. Dublin
Description: You would have to class this as an atypical Lawrence shot, we see very little interest in the camera or the photographer. I notice that the photo is labeled Brown Street, a street which is not immediately familiar to me. I suspect that we will find that not many of the buildings we see have survived over the last 100 years, or have they? As per the 2014 Streetview, and the incredible insights from today's contributors, only the leftmost building seems to remain. According to the NIAH entry it was once a 'Female Penitent Asylum'. While 'slum' seems a tad harsh to modern ears, this part of Dublin mixed industrial with residential - in a way that zoning laws might preclude today. For example, within 2 streets of this image were multiple tanneries, a piggery, glue works, maltings, and a fertilizer works. And, per the comments below, a 'house of ill-fame' :) .... I will leave it up to you to discover the reason for its inclusion. As a bonus we have a lovely photo of Lady's Island. As quickly spotted by beachcomberaustralia, Niall McAuley and others, this image of the village and church of Lady's Island (at least partially through the gate arch of Lady's Island Castle) includes pieces of photographic kit in the right foreground. Viscount FitzGibbon who fell at the
Description: We may have visited this scene before if not this photograph. A fine glass plate from the Eason Collection of Viscount Fitzgibbon which stood opposite Shannon Rowing Club on Sarsfields Bridge over the river Shannon! I am curious to know what that stack/chimney is to the left rere of the statue?... Though we've seen this statue before (from other angles), this vantage gives us a better view of the plaque. It reads: "To commemorate the bravery of / Viscount Fitzgibbon / 8th Royal Irish Hussars / & of his gallant companions in arms / natives of the county & city of limerick / who glouriously fell in the Crimean War". As per the various contributions, Fitzgibbon was reported 'missing presumed dead' during the Charge of the Light Brigade, seemingly inspiring Rudyard Kipling’s short story ‘The Man Who Was’. The statue was blown-up by the IRA in 1930, and a monument to the events of 1916 later placed on the plinth. The cannon are still apparently outside the Harbour Master's office... Marconi Calling
Description: Marconi Station Clifden, Connemara I received a lovely gift of a biography on Marconi at Christmas. The book by Marc Raboy is subtitled "The man who networked the world". What an interesting man he was, I was surprised to learn about his Irish roots and connections. He was as famous in his time as any of today's technology leaders. Today's inputs confirmed just how historically important this relatively remote patch of bog-land was. From the Alcock and Brown transatlantic flight of 1919, to the Marconi station which opened in 1907. The video offered by beachcomberaustralia (something of a distant Marconi rellie), and the map offered by DannyM8 give us sense of the immense scale of the buildings and telegraph pole structures in the rearground of this shot. Something which is hard to fathom given the rural nature of Bill Bartlett's contemporary image from almost the same spot..... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Likely c.1907-1914 (based on station's inauguration date of Oct 1907). Another day, another 'institution', Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow.
Description: A fairly typical manor house in rural Ireland is described as being "another Institution" in these archives! Given the way these things went when families were unable to pay for the upkeep of these houses and the countryside had become less welcoming the chances are that what was once a family home was snapped up by a religious order for - an Institution! But where is it and what was it used for? Sharon.corbet quickly answered the first (where?) part of our question, identifying this as Fortgranite House, County Wicklow. [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] followed-up with an answer to the second (what?) part of our question. And advised that this probably wasn't an 'institution' when photographed, but the home of the Dennis family, who seem to have had an extensive military tradition in the family... Croagh Patrick, Westport, Co. Mayo and a whole lot more.
Description: Down the Wesht today to Co.Mayo, God help us, with a distant view of Irelands Holy Mountain and a whole lot more! This lovely Royal sized glass plate has some excellent detail on the coastal location, with mixed rolling stock on a railway siding to add to the interest. We may not have a dog, but we do have a horse in this landscape - otherwise largely empty of signs of life. While today's contributors have identified several of the buildings visible between Westport Harbour and Croagh Patrick (including the bridge to Rossbeg and some of the larger houses on the landform), they all date to the early 19th century. And so are not much help in dating the image. The general consensus though is that the Midland Great Western Railway rolling-stock in the foreground probably dates to the latter-half of the date range. Perhaps more likely to be c.1900 than mid-19th century.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Likely latter half of this range. Stereo view of tennis court with a doubles match taking place, large house in the background
Description: Apologies for the delay in posting this morning! This image had me fooled, as if I needed it, as I took it to be from the "Stereo Pairs" collection. It is, as you can see, from the Clonbrock Collection and possibly taken by the uncle in the bowler hat we had on here some time ago. Is it FitzWilliam? With thanks to O Mac (corrberated by sharon.corbet, Niall McAuley and guliolopez) it is confirmed that this scene was captured at Ailesbury Road in Dublin. At the time of this image (likely within a decade or so of the turn of the 20th century), it was home to the Meldon family. Who lived at No.31 during the 1911 census. Some of the Meldon family were, as we see here, keen tennis players. And indeed Louis Albert Meldon went on contest the Davis Cup for Ireland more than once. While Ailesbury Road is still very much one of the country's most desirable addresses (the capital's "embassy row" and 2nd most expensive Monopoly square, where every square yard is worth a fortune), evidence of these tennis courts seems to remain.... A fine set of fetlocks: Commissioned by Mr. T. Widger
Description: The full title on this is "Meet at Gracedieu(?) - commissioned by Mr. T. Widger". Maybe Mr. Widger rode to the hunt, and perhaps wanted an image of both he and his steed recorded for posterity(?) It certainly is a fine shot of the pair, and there appears to be a "Big House" in the background. There is an area in Waterford called Gracedieu but was that named after a house or vice versa? It does sound familiar.... The consensus is that this is a member of the Widger family from Waterford. Pretty much all of whom (of working-age) were recorded in the 1911 census as horse-dealers or trainers. The suggestion is that Poole captured this image at Grace Dieu estate, a short distance south of Waterford, and which we have visited before. Based on similar images in the catalogue, and the fashions visible, it seems likely this dates to the first decade or so of the 20th century.... Photographer: A. H. Make sure to take my best side?
Description: The Duchess of St. Albans and her guests pose in the garden for Mr. Poole. And it seems a number of the party are careful to show their best sides to the camera! I suspect that the dress and hairstyles will make this a relatively easy shot to date. But how about naming the participants? Have a great weekend everybody! While we don't have names (yet) for the other guests, the lady of the house and commissioner of the image (presumed to be the seated lady with the larger hat) was Grace Bernal-Osborne, Duchess of Saint Albans (c.1846-1926). There's a suggestion that her husband, the 10th Duke of Saint Albans, is not pictured. WIth consensus that the image was likely captured at Newtown Anner House, outside Clonmel, County Tipperary. Probably in around the 1900s. But certainly not after the 1920s. Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford Date: Catalogue range c.1901-1954. Sunshine, shadows, leafy trees and a fountain in Blessington, Co. Wicklow.
Description: In what appears to be a lovely sunny afternoon in Blessington, when the photographer captures a beautiful image of the Market Hall and Monument/Fountain. This is a beautiful area - some of which has been changed completely when a nearby valley was flooded to provide water and power to the nearby Dublin region! Apart from the "missing belfry" that [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] noted, some of the discussion today was on how recognisable the same scene is today. Also noted was that the local names of the monument and fountain seem to vary - with most sources refering to it as the "Downshire Monument", at at least some as the "Boyle Monument". Whatever the proper title, it seems likely this view of the monument and market house was captured in the first-half (rather than latter-half) of the 1900s-1930s range.... Traffic Jam in Main Street, Delgany, Co. Wicklow
Description: This Lawrence image of Main Street, Delgany is in considerable contrast to today's reality. This was taken when it was a tiny village, the centre of a rural community with few people, and when three horses and carts could constitute a traffic jam. Today all that has changed, and Delgany is a desired address and almost a commuter town to Ireland's capital city. (PS: Dog Alert Klaxon! :) ) While location and subject were pretty clear, with thanks in particular today to Niall McAuley (and corroberation from others), it seems likely that this image was taken around the turn of the 20th century. Perhaps c.1901. When the census records that Annie Long and her daughter Eveline ran the post office. With a firm suggestion that French has captured the postmistress and her postal assistant at the post office doorway (centre middleground). However, who and what the lads with the fish are up-to (left middleground) is anyone's guess :) Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Description: Though the catalogue description implies this classical style building was in Limerick City, this Stereo Pairs image is going to take some identifying! Because, it is certainly not the railway station in Limerick City, nor any other railway station that I know of. And so we are left with the question(s): what and where is it, and is it still standing? And we got our answer - very quickly - when Oretani Wildlife (Mike Grimes) identified this as Armagh Courthouse. And, despite a bombing in the 1990s (which seemingly shifted one of the columns "back a full 9 inches"), it is still standing... Description: I've been in Dublin for a long time now but this is not a castle or ruins that I am familiar with. It looks like it was a significant establishment in its day and would be a real attraction today(?) I look forward with interest to what you may be able to find about this... .... And the reason it didn't look familiar (as a castle in or near Dublin) is that it is neither. It is not a castle - but an abbey. And is not in/near Dublin - but more than 30 miles from the capital in Bective, County Meath. The cataloguer may be forgiven however, as the abbey's "castle-like qualities" were seemingly why it was used as a filming-location for 'Braveheart' in the 1990s. Without Mel Gibson peering from a window however, dating may be difficult - not least given how remarkably little has changed in the 100 or so years since this image was captured :) Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: c.1900-1939 (possibly after c.1915 when some works were undertaken at the site) NLI Ref: EAS_1727 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

General View, Bruckless, Co. Donegal
Description: This is the second time in recent weeks that Bruckless has been mentioned on this stream! This fine Royal sized plate taken by Mr. French shows the remote rural area of the time in fine detail. The other passenger on the jaunting car does not look in the least pleased at having to wait until the photographer has finished :-) As today's contributors have pointed-out, the "other passenger" is a presumed member of the Lawrence/French entourage. We nicknamed him Jaunty in a previous discussion, and though not especially jaunty or animated here, his presence suggests a date in the late 1880s. (As at least some other images captured during the same "trip" were dated to c.1887). The other main topic of discussion today was on the two larger buildings visible - with [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] and [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] identifying them as Bruckless Hall, tannery and Bruckless House. (Though the latter remains, the more central functional-looking building has since been demolished and replaced....) Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Likely late 1880s (as per others in "Jaunty" series) NLI Ref: L_ROY_01505 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Old Church, Co. Galway?
Description: An iconic if pooly captioned(?) image from the Lawrence Collection today. Galway is famous for many things and the window in the foreground is one of those, perhaps even more than the beautiful church in the background? And so today's discussion reflected the two main visible subjects: "Lynch's Window" to the foreground, and the Church of St Nicholas to the rear. The latter has captured our attention before - with today's discussion focusing on how the lack of a clock in the tower helps date the image to before 1898. The former, Lynch's Window, we hadn't previously discussed (despite practically gazing through it a year or so ago :) ). While the inscription below the window reflects a local legend (of a 15th century magistrate who prioritised loyalty to law and city over loyalty to family - and hung his own son), it could well be a folly of it's day. The suggestion being that the window and structure surrounding it were built of otherwise unrelated architectural fragments in the early 19th century. Whether the story or the structure are 15th century truths or 19th century follies, we're absolutely delighted that both remain part of the fabric of such a vibrant and historic city..... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Woof, woof, woof! Friday's child is loving and giving!
Description: No, Morning Mary has not gone barking mad! Mr. Poole's generosity in providing three dogs in full living detail just made her feeling like a good roll in the grass! The Poole collection really does have some fine shots with people and animals therein and this is no exception. The ladies with their dogs on the front porch of the family pile look very relaxed and provide a happy scene to end the week! And while we focused somewhat in the canines in the description, it was (quite rightly) the humans who captured the attention in today's discussion. Beachcomberaustralia, sharon.corbet and Niall McAuley point out that the ladies from the catalogue title ("Miss Malcomson and Lady Clodagh on steps") are likely Lady Clodagh Beresford (daughter of 5th Marquess of Waterford), and a member of the Malcomson family (who had shipyards and mills in Waterford at the turn of the 20th century). Niall McAuley tells us that Lady Clodagh (1879-1957) actually popularised the name Clodagh (there were few to no girls with the given name of "Clodagh" in the country prior). Sticking with the "Clodagh" theme, Niall and O Mac offer pretty firm evidence that this image was captured at Clodagh House in Portlaw, County Waterford, where the Malcomson's lived.... Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford Date: Catalogue range c.1901-1954. Likely very early in that range.
