Who lives in a Fairy Castle?
Description: Yet again we have a case of deja vu! We seem to have seen aspects of this estate in the past though not the castle itself. A renaissance style castle set in the North of Ireland must have seemed pretty pretentious to the sober, hard working northern folk? To all our many supporters and contributors on this Photostream we the three Marys and all at Library towers wish you a very happy St. Patricks Day. To the Ireland team who take on England in a Grand Slam decider tomorrow we say COME ON IRELAND Thanks to BeachcomberAustralia, sharon.corbet, and Niall McAuley for quickly identifying that this isn't strictly a castle - but the 19th century Scottish Baronial architecture of Helen's Bay railway station in County Down. John Spooner also suggests that, unlike other stereopairs that he's helpfully "3d-ified" this image isn't an entirely true stereo image. Apparently both sides are identical..... Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence Collection: Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1860-1883. A Royal Plate for a Royal Hotel in Valentia
Description: This fine Royal Plate from the Lawrence Collection is our offering for today. A magnificent hotel taken on a sunny and calm day with lots of activity on the nearby pier and water makes it look the perfect vacation destination! The activity on the fishing boat tied to the pier caused me to look at it closely and the rig appears unusual. I would love to have that rig and the nets over the side explained to me? As with yesterday's image of Galway City, there is something of a sense of deja vu with this image of Knightstown on Valentia island - unsurprising given that we (and French, Mason and O'Dea) have visited several times before. This visit was perhaps early in the catalogue's c.1890-1910 range - as the clock tower (perhaps under constructions here) is dated by its NIAH entry to c.1870-1890.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1890-1910. Eglington Buildings and Claddagh Rings (Dillons), Galway City, Co. Galway
Description: On the first day on our search for the next 60 million views we have this lovely Eason image of the heart of Galway city. Galway is such a picturesque and welcoming place and this area is the beating heart of the city itself. The Claddagh Ring is synonymous with the county and has been explored here in the past. We were reminded today that we've visited this corner of William St and Eglinton St before - though perhaps not amongst the same crowds evident in this 2017 StreetView. The general consensus is that this image dates to perhaps the mid/late 1920s. Or even the early 1930s. At 1 in the afternoon. 'Dublin Time' :) Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Likely after 1922/23 (buildings). The Giants Ring in Kenmare
Description: To the Lawrence Collection this morning and to "The Giants Ring", Kenmare, Co. Kerry. It is not easy to pick it out due to the more modern construction dominating the foreground but there appears to be a ring of ancient stones as the feature? As Niall McAuley points out, the construction date of Kenmare Stone Circle itself (c.2500-1000 BC) doesn't really help with dating this image :) Niall's investigations on the nearby/visible houses however suggest that this image dates from after 1874. Helping narrow the catalogue range by a decade (to c.1874-1914). The lime kiln, on the left, was apparently part of a nearby quarry. The more modern landscaping and planting around the circle give it a much more lush and enclosed feel today... Tennis Court (with slight obstruction) in Boyle
Description: Back to the old reliable Lawrence Collection today and a visit to the beautiful town of Boyle in County Roscommon. Titled "Tennis Court, Boyle" this image appears to be more about the statue than the tennis court in the background but don't let the truth get in the way of a good story :-) And indeed it was/is a good story. This statue, of King William III, had been moved to this location (from a nearby bridge) in the early 19th century. As with other memorials to King Billy, it suffered several defacements, before being entirely removed entirely before the 1930s. The general consensus is that this image dates to before 1905 - when the statue was seemingly beheaded. The pedestal remains, and is a landmark in the surrounding parkland and "Boyle pleasure grounds".... Description: The cataloguer may not have had the benefit of super zoomability as we do, and so perhaps did not highlight the castle nestling among the trees. At first viewing I thought that this might confound us, but that huge keep may make this easier than expected. Where is it and is it still standing? Rory_Sherlock was quick to confirm the location of this shot. It was undoubtedly taken from the garden of Rockmount House looking eastwards towards Castle Howard in County Wicklow. Both residences are located in the Vale of Avoca, close to the "meeting of the waters" on the Avonbeg river. It seems that both are, indeed, still standing. If the lawn or Rockmount House is still set up for tennis, one imagines it didn't get much use during the unprecendented March snow this week..... The Tomb of King Connor, Roscommon, Co. Roscommon
Description: On a day when history repeats itself, Ireland has 3 inches of snow and slows to a dead stop we have the tomb of King Connor (whoever he was) and perhaps a little bit of real history. And the history of this tomb/effigy is as interesting as it is ancient. Feidlim Ua Conchobair (Fedhlim O'Connor) was King of Connacht from 1233 to 1265, and founded the the Dominican Priory of St. Mary in Roscommon - where this memorial remains. Apart from (apparently) some missing pieces, it is remarkably well preserved after nearly 800 years. One wonders what he would have made of the 'magic' that allows for a 3D model of his memorial.... Electrical wares on display in the Toowoomba Light and Power Company's shop window
Description: Creator: Unidentified. Location: Toowoomba, Queensland. Description: View looking through the shop window showing a display of a variety of electrical goods, including jugs, stoves, refrigerators, lamps, toasters, mix-masters, kettles and light fittings. The shop windows have leadlight inserts decorating the top part of the frames and the light fittings hanging inside the shop are Art Deco style, as is a small wall bracket on the back wall. A fine collection of ivy? (on 'St. Columb's House')
Description: The title for this Stereo Pairs image goes "Celtic Oratory - very overgrown" which is somewhat of an understatement! Looking at the door and the stonework I would not have recognised it as a Celtic church building festooned with ivy. It will be interesting to see if we can establish its location? (FYI - Well done to all on the terrific detective work yesterday! To identify not only the people in the shot but the place where it was taken was excellent and very enjoyable to watch as it unfolded.) Perhaps less intensive (but no less invaluable) investigation has confirmed that this is St. Columb's House a 12th (or perhaps 10th) century oratory in Kells, County Meath.... The Queen's Yacht but not in Queenstown?
Description: The Queens Yacht at anchor (it is affixed to a buoy which means that it is moored not anchored) with what looks like its twin in the background. As Queenstown was the name given to Cobh in Co. Cork and this looks nothing like Cobh it is safe to say that this is not Queenstown! This lovely, crisp Royal plate from the Lawrence collection shows the detail of the ship to perfection. What seems surprising is the number of small boats in close proximity, herself was not that fond of mixing with the peasants? With confirmation that this is not Queenstown, and as derangedlemur notes, is actually/ironically Kingstown, we have mapped this image to the harbor at Dún Laoghaire. In terms of date, given that this "version" of the royal yacht was superseded by a newer vessel in 1901, it seems plausible that this image dates to a royal visit in 1900.... Horse apples, stone walls and Benbo!
Description: This Eason image of Benbo mountain in County Leitrim has lots of atmosphere provided by a long line of horse dung, well constructed stone walls, a man (policeman?) with a firearm(?) walking off into the distance, and the mountain looking down over all! Not very uplifting on this windy morning in January but interesting nonetheless and the "streetview" will no doubt be illuminating? With thanks to Streetview inputs from B-59 and sharon.corbet we have confirmation that this part of Manorhamilton is still readily recognisable - though thankfully with fewer deposited/natural obstacles to overcome :) Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1920 NLI Ref: Eas 2642 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Wedding group : commissioned by Capt.Thomas Hayes. Union Barracks, Kilmacthomas
Description: A handsome military group celebrating the nuptials of Captain Thomas Hayes? There is, however, less than military precision on display - some wearing`gloves and others holding them, some wearing caps and other bareheaded! With thanks to various contributors, including our own Carol Maddock, it seems certain that this is a wedding party shot from the June wedding of Captain Thomas Hayes (of Union Barracks, Kilmacthomas) and Miss Anne "Nan" Walsh (of Tramore). Along with other groomsmen and bridesmaids is apparently Commandant Patrick "Paddy" Paul (of Waterford). Based on investigations by ofarrl, it seems certain that the group are pictured at the door to Kelly's Hotel in Tramore. Spanking new at the time of this shot, the hotel was felled and rebuilt in the 1980s, and is now the site of the Majestic Hotel... Photographer: A. H. A very rare visit to County Longford
Description: This is a rare visit to the county of Longford and the pity is that it shows two institutional buildings rather than the many fine sights there! The Convent of Mercy beside the Union building on a rise must have been dominating the town for many years. Not as difficult to locate as the bombed out bridge of last week but it will be nice to see what has changed here in the meantime? Our interpid detectives have confirmed that the changes in the meantime include the addition of an extra wing to the convent building, and the demolition of the workhouse buildings themselves (on the right). The general consensus is that image was captured no more than a few years after the building of the convent (c.1892) - given the condition, unfilled statue niches, and saplings in the garden.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range 1865-1914. Definitely after 1892 (built). No place like home!
Description: The original title for this stereo pairs shot is "Institutional building, open University, wings 3 bays wide, 4 deep, main obelisk 3 a side 3 to central portion, cart foreground" and I suspect that it won't last too long? A very imposing if unattractive building that I do not recognise and suspect that it no longer stands? Most assuredly it looks no place like home! While I was (thankfully) wrong about the "no longer standing" prediction, I wasn't wrong about how quickly this one was identified. sharon.corbet was quick to pinpoint this as the Custom House in Belfast. B-59 tells us that it was designed by the prolific Charles Lanyon (1813–1889), whose firm's works we have come across several times before. Sharon also proposes a refinement to the date range - based on the suggestion that the south entrance (visible/tagged on the right) was only in place between 1872 and 1886..... Sitting in splendid isolation?
Description: The statue of some cleric sitting in splendid isolation in St. Mary's Cathedral in Limerick City to begin the week. Last week we visited the beautiful county of Clare and today we go east to the gateway to the Shannon and the spiritual home of Rugby on the island of Ireland. The main learnings from today's photo concern the three memorials pictured:  • Centre is a statue of John Webb (bishop; 1775–1833) which was sculpted by Edward Hodges Baily in 1836.  • Right is a memorial to Thomas Summerfield (major; c.1767-1833) which was commissioned by his fellow officers, and  • Left is a memorial to George Tierney (merchant; d.1788) placed by his nephew following a bequest to the church in which it stands. In terms of dating this image, Niall McAuley offers a well-consider suggestion that it was captured prior to some renovation works (in this corner of the cathedral) which completed around 1880.... Description: We have visited Lahinch in County Clare before with photographs showing its golf and aviation connections. This excellent shot from the Lawrence stable of the strand and the Town itself is an ideal one for this forum as there is so much going on both in the foreground and at a distance. Shortly after we posted this image, BeachcomberAustralia was quick to remind us that we had posted a similar image - 7 looong years ago :) In the comments on that original image, [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] had told us that the Golf Links Hotel (seen on the cliff top here) was built in 1896. Castle or traffic obstruction - Clonmels dilemma?
Description: This old gate to the town of Clonmel which once controlled traffic entering and leaving must have become a true bottleneck with the recent proliferation of motor cars and heavy traffic? At the time this photograph was taken however it does not appear to have been too much of a problem. Thank you all for yesterdays contributions on Main Street, Tipperary, it was very enlightening! Thanks also for the contributions on today's image. Focusing mainly on the date, the suggestion is that it was captured in the first decade or so of the catalogue range (perhaps after 1905, or into the 1910s). Certainly the NIAH entry on the gate itself doesn't help - in that it confirms it was built 100 years prior to this capture. St. Helens Bridge, Crawfords Burn
Description: Having spent some time recently down in the sunny South East, or over in beautiful Sligo, it seems appropriate that we visit the wee North. This fine manorial style bridge looks a formidable crossing over a very minor road. Given that, even 100 years ago it was overgrown, how does it look today? While still somewhat overgrown, as evidenced by the contemporary Flickr shots linked from the comments, we are at least delighted that this striking bridge still stands. Today's contributors tell us that this bridge was built, along with the nearby Helen's Bay Railway Station in the 1860s. Designed by architect Benjamin Ferrey, the project was bankrolled by Frederick Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, whose lands the line traversed. And whose coat-of-arms still adorn the bridge.... The Waterfall, Poulaphouca, Co. Wicklow
Description: A beautiful Royal plate of the Waterfall at Poulaphouca, Co. Wicklow. Over the years I have been in that area many times but have never seen this so perhaps it has been inundated? While not inundated, today's contributors and the relevant Wikipedia article tell us that the Poulaphouca waterfall was largely reduced to a trickle following the nearby reservoir works. Ducats Grove, Carlow, Co. Carlow
Description: This fairytale castle in Co. Carlow looks more like a child's dream than a mature person's reality. Lines of statues leading to a door guarded by armoured spear bearers. All this was bound to deter the faint hearted! As attested by the contributions on this image (and the associatied Wikipedia article), while the main structure of Duckett's Grove remains, the statues and interiors do not. Home to the Duckett family for several hundred years, it was never fully occupied following their departure in 1916 - and the main building was destroyed by fire in 1933. While the interiors were never redeveloped, some life has returned to the place - with events, tourism and gardens that form part of the Carlow Garden Trail... Edermine, Co. Wexford
Description: Unusually for a Lawrence Royal plate this image is not quite tack sharp, but it does have a hazy beauty and suggestion "other times" to it! Edermine in County Wexford would appear to be a very big house with wonderful greenhouses for plant growth. I will be following the stream with interest to learn what I can about it! And what we learned, thankfully, is that everything here is still standing - and occupied. Edermine House itself was built c.1840 by John Benjamin Keane, the central chapel built c.1860 to designs by Augustus Pugin, and the magnificent greenhouse also c.1860 by James Pierce. It seems plausible that the Talbot Powers were the resident family enjoying the gardens around the time of this photo. After hosting refugee monks 100 years ago, it now remains in private hands... Church interior showing altar and pews. Script over altar reads
Description: 1860-1930 gives us a date window of 70 years and yet there may be nothing in this photo which will allow us to significantly narrow that window? I am confident that we will get the location. In terms of location, it is unequivocally established that this is St Catherine's Church (CoI) in Ahascragh, County Galway. (A church and churchyard which the Dillons and ourselves have visited before). In terms of date, based in particular on inputs from Rory Sherlock and Bernard Healy, the guys have been able to more than half the 70-year range to perhaps 30-years (likely 1870s/80s/90s). This is based primarily what we see (and don't see) on the left-handside of the image. Specifically, the scrolled memorial dates to the early 1870s. So we must be after that. And this memorial was moved, and a new trancept was built, before the mid-1900s. So we must be before then.... Ballsbridge, Co. Dublin
Description: I keep thinking I have seen this photograph before? We are back in Ballsbridge with this fine shot from Mr French. There is a lot going on which would suggest Spring Show or Horse Show? From a dating point of view I see no sign of the internal combustion engine. As usual we had excellent input on the date and location of this image. On the latter, BeachcomberAustralia suggests that French captured this image from the window of a building (now a restaurant) just west of the bridge. On the date, Niall McAuley's investigations on the businesses pictured (and the electrified tram lines) that this image likely dates from the very early 1900s (possibly c.1901-1906)..... Hatters Castle in the trees!
Description: The original title of this Stereo Pairs image is "Long shot over trees, mountain in background, Co. Wicklow" and it is a long shot and a glimpse rather than a full view of a castellated house. No doubt if the house is not identified the hill/mountain in the background will? Almost simultaneously, Rory_Sherlock and Niall McAuley identified this as Glanmore Castle near Ashford in County Wicklow. Originally owned by the Syne family through many generations (including John Millington Synge's own immediate family), the castle has since been redeveloped as separate dwellings - some of which have apparently been "on the market" in recent years.... Vice-Regal Lodge, Dublin City, Co. Dublin
Description: We have a very special edition for you today - we are posting 3 photos for you to enjoy. Sabina Higgins, wife of President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, officially launched our “Photo Detectives” exhibition in September. During the event we discussed our catalogue of old photographs of Áras an Uachtaráin (the official home of the President of Ireland), and we made a promise to select a number of the photos and to share them here on Flickr. Áras an Uachtaráin, formerly the Vice Regal Lodge, is now the official residence and principal workplace of the President of Ireland. It is located off Chesterfield Avenue in the Phoenix Park in Dublin. The building, designed by Nathaniel Clements and completed in 1751 and added to over the years, is open to the public each Saturday. As usual we look forward to your comments and observations. And, of course, Photo Detectives is running at the National Photographic Archive in Temple Bar, Dublin, 7 days a week - make sure to drop in if you get a chance! Roundwood, Co. Wicklow
Description: Roundwood as none of us will have seen it. Irelands highest village looks like a tiny hamlet dominated by a fine stone church with maidens dancing at the crossroads (sorry, I got a bit carried away there)! Children in pinnies, a sunhat on display and a soft misty fog on the mountains, Ireland as we dream of it. Given that subject and location are clear, the main discussion today was on date. The general consensus (based on businesses and buildings visible) is that we are likely closer to the first half of the catalogue range (c.1880s) than to the upper bound (c.1900). Interestingly, [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] highlights that this very picture hangs in the lounge of the (now very smartly rennovated) building on the right hand side of the street. Where they have dated it c.1890.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1880-1900. Square & Main street, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork
Description: If I remember correctly we have been to Mitchelstown before but not with this particular view and not with the Eason collection? Up in the heights of north Cork, Mitchelstown is a small town of wide streets and this fine square. The military firing range of Kilworth is nearby. Given that location and subject was firmly established, much of the discussion on this image was on the date. The general consensus is that we can likely refine the 40 year catalogue range (c.1900-1939) to the years around WWI (perhaps c.1915-1920). Specifically, this image must date from after 1906 (statue built), probably dates from at least the mid-1910s (businesses/posters/motor-car), and possibly dates from before 1920 (bank building work)..... Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Certainly >1906. Perhaps <1920. Let's have a bit of fun.... in Navan
Description: For most recent photographs, with the exception of the DeValera image, we knew where if not the when or the who but today I believe we have a conundrum of sorts. The catalogue title on this says "View of Houses, Dublin City, Co. Dublin"! Now this is clearly an institution somewhere, perhaps not even in Dublin, and not a group of houses in the form of separate residences. What is it, where is it and when was this image likely to have been captured? While it took part of the weekend (proving that "sleeping on it" is sometimes useful), the persistence of a number of editors have confirmed that this is St. Joseph's Mercy Convent in Navan. Almost certainly photographed after 1910. derangedlemur and Niall McAuley in particular were instrumental in finding and confirming the location, with Frank_C providing extra information on the foreground stream. The latter has since been culverted - and is seemingly part of Leighsbrook Lane in Navan... Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Street, Midleton, Co. Cork
Description: To end the week, on Friday this time, I thought a visit to Ireland's secessionist County of Cork would be appropriate! This lovely Eason shot of a street in Midleton is a far cry from the statues, banks and hackneys of yesterday's College Green shot. It may however have some bonuses nonetheless! The main 'bonus', prompted by initial investigations by [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] and [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] and others, is that the car pictured is probably the Ford motor car of John Moore. John Moore, who lived on this street (Broderick Street) in Midleton, was one of only three registered car owners in the town proper. At least in the 1920s and 1930s. It seems more than plausible therefore that it is his car that is pictured. If so, it is likely that this was captured after 1916.... Dublin Castle and the State Apartments from the lawn
Description: This fine view of the rear of Dublin Castle and the facade of the State Apartments by Robert French keeps us in Dublin city for yet another day! Very little has changed in this scene in the intervening 100+ years. The main learning today - for myself anyway - was that the lawn pictured was the original site of the "Black Pool" or "Dubh Linn" - from which the city gets its name. As Béarla ar ndóigh. That is, according to the article and illustration which [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] links us to. As per the contemporary views which BultacoFan and Beachcomber provide, while changed significantly in the centuries before this image, it has not changed much since.... Feltrim Hill, Swords, Co. Dublin
Description: Feltrim Hill in Swords looking down on Charles J. Haughey's old home and the Swords, Malahide and Howth in the distance. This was a prominent landmark in its time and was built on a rare (for Ireland) outcrop of coral based limestone. Almost simultaneously several contributors identified the structure pictured as Feltrim Windmill. It was - we learned - built in the 17th century from Dutch bricks by Dutch workers. Originally used as a woolen mill, it became a corn mill, and was apparently used for a time as a semaphore tower. It stood until 1973 - when it was mysteriously/surreptitiously/criminally(?) demolished one Saturday night. It's demise apparently the source of discussion on the floor of the Dáil.... View of a Dublin Street (Dorset Street), Drumcondra, Co. Dublin
Description: A visit to the Eason collection for Tuesday with a great and busy view of Dorset Street in Dublin's city centre. While it does not have the clarity and detail of yesterdays Lawrence Royal plate it has lots going on and plenty of names to aid an exciting search! Following an initial "gut feel" from Beachcomber, and some slightly more evidence-based sleuthing by Bernard Healy (assisted by Niall McAuley), it seems likely that this image was taken around 1913 - give or take a few years. Probably in the run-up to Easter. This is based on the cards on offer at no.24 Dorest Street, but mainly on the (perhaps then newly opened) Tylers bootstore at no.29. Just goes to show that there is room in our detective ranks for both the gut instinct of the gumshoe, and the hardslog of the criminalist :) Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. R.I.C. Depot, Dublin City, Co. Dublin
Description: Situated just inside the North Circular Road gates to the Phoenix Park these lovely, old, red bricked buildings always seemed separate from the old RIC Depot. Was Mr. French correct in his assertion that it was part of the Depot? It is certainly not the image that is shown these days for Garda Headquarters. The suggestion (proposed by Bernard Healy and endorsed by Niall McAuley and swordscookie) is that these were the 'Married Quarters' for RIC members and families based at the main Depot. Description: We are somewhat regular visitors to Antrim's Causeway Coast, but had not visited Dunluce Castle before. As BeachcomberAustralia points-out, we've ridden the Giant's Causeway Tramway before - the "third rail" of which we see here. It is this third rail that helps date the image in fact, as beachcomberaustralia tells us that it was replaced with overhead wires in 1899. Victoria Castle East Gate, Killiney, Co. Dublin
Description: Had I not seen the caption on this image I would have thought that I was looking at a castle in Spain or some far land! A beautiful scene that is nearly on the doorstep of Library Towers! Killiney has changed a wee bit since this shot was taken by Mr. French... Sharon.corbet confirms that the castle has also changed a bit since - at least in name. Now called Manderley Castle and owned by musician Enya, Victoria Castle was built in the 1840s by QC and MP Robert Warren. A very old view of the Museum which will never be seen again. Something we also won't see again is the "fire escape station" we see in the centre. Our intrepid Flickroonies confirm that this public safety equipment wasn't just "left lying around" like so much street furniture. Often manned, it was quickly brought to bear when needed. Certainly quicker than if transported from a distance - without the assistance of the 13 tonne engines the Dublin Fire Brigade has today. Thankfully (as far as we know), it was never needed to deal with threats to the National Museum's collonaded facade (or indeed its collections).... Description: The deep treasure chest that is the Lawrence Collection is the gift that keeps on giving. Today we are treated to a lovely cabinet sized plate of the Grand Stand Hotel at the Curragh Racecourse in County Kildare. The whole racing industry has changed radically since this shot was taken by Mr. French, but then the whole world has changed... ... And this area has changed. To the extent that I've added this image to our "no longer standing" album. While BeachcomberAustralia highlights that at least some of the building on the left survives (under the Curragh grandstand), and the hotel on the right survived until the last decade (til the streetview car passed-by in 2009 ), we've since learned that the hotel is now entirely demolished. Doctor Atkins, District Asylum
Description: A stream of irreverent thoughts came into my head when I saw the title to this shot from Poole! Is he perhaps an inmate or the attendant? Does he make "Dr. Atkins Patented Nerve Powders for Lunatic conditions"? No doubt the esteemed Dr. was a healer who laboured to bring solace to those with mental illness but who was he and what asylum did he work at? And we have answers to all our questions. The consensus is that this is Dr Ringrose Atkins, the Resident Medical Superintendent of Waterford District Asylum (an institution we have visited before). Dr Atkins was from a Cork family (which apparently included several generations of medical professionals), and he was appointed to the position in Waterford in 1878. Evidently he was also president of the YMCA and involved in the temperance movement. He died in his late 40s from complications arising from appendicitis. Given that the 1898 edition of the Journal of Psychiatry records his death as occuring that February, it seems we'll need to tweak the catalogue date range for this image..... Photographer: A. H. Sir Walter Raleigh, cottage at Youghal
Description: From the academic Sir John P. Mahaffy to his more famous knightly colleague Sir Walter Raleigh and a cottage in County Cork! My definition of a cottage and Raleigh's definition would be many miles (or rooms and windows) apart it seems. I thought that the only remaining reminder of Raleigh was Tournafulla in Limerick where his troops decimated the population after the Desmond rebellion...? Based on today's insights, it seems possible that this image was taken while the house (known as Myrtle Grove) was owned by the Blake family; some members of whom could perhaps be captured in the windows..... Description: If you feel a sense of 'déja vu' or even if you feel you have seen this all before then you are correct. It is Wexford but taken from the other bank of the Slaney and showing the town and its skyline in the distance. Description: I just love putting up these images from the Stereo Pairs Collection! There is something other worldly about them, a really distinctive view into the past and in stereo to boot! This image with its long and convoluted catalogue description has really caught my fancy with the mix of aspects, the bridge, the stone walls, the ruins, the apparently 'in use' church buildings and the more modern structures in the background. Who will be first to identify them and give us a location - The Lemur, Sharon, Niall, That guy from the land down under? Lets go.... And indeed it was Niall (quickly corroborated by Stuart) who gave us the location - as the church and abbey at Cong, County Meath. Confirming that very little around here remains unknown for too long... Kinnetty Village, Birr, Co. Offaly
Description: The Lawrence Collection and the work of Mr. French really is a joy to behold! Each day seems to offer a view of a new place, a new element of an Ireland long gone and a charming insight into a country before the advent of modernisation, social upheaval and war. This beautiful, charming Royal Plate image of Kinnetty (?) looks as though "peace comes dropping slow" there each day and rests until midnight. Description: This somehow familiar (yet so far unidentified) castle on the shore of the sea or an estuary is todays fare. I know I've seen it before, and have an idea where it might be, but I would be guessing. Whereas it is reasonable to expect that the experts out there can give a definitive location! Who will be first? The answer to the second question (who will be first) is derangedlemur. The answer to the first question (where is this) is Blackrock Castle in Cork Harbour. The original 16th century fort on this site was redeveloped as a castle in the 17th century, but was damaged by fire and rebuilt in the 18th century. The castle was nearly entirely destroyed (again by fire) and substantially redeveloped in the early 19th century. It was repurposed as an astronomical observatory and museum in more recent years. (The larger towers close to the water are part of the original foundation/structure).... Lady Louise's Bridge, Lismore, Co. Waterford
Description: Today we have a very pleasant landscape from Waterford. I know Lismore is famous for the Munster Blackwater, but this river seems far too small to be it? All details on Lady Louise will also be very welcome. With thanks especially to Jan Hilbrand Brink, Bernard Healy and beachcomberaustralia we've learned that Lady Louisa Caroline Cavendish (1835-1907) was the eldest daughter of the 7th Duke of Devonshire, whose family had acquired Lismore Castle in the 18th century. Lady Louisa apparently took over the household at a young age, and was responsible for laying out a number of walks around the demesne - clearly including the one that crossed this footbridge. O Mac and Niall McAuley have pinpointed it to within a mile or so of Lismore Castle - although now only the stone or concrete abutments remain... Trinity College, Botany Bay, Dublin City
Description: I have never heard of "Botany Bay" in the context of Trinity College. Of course the real Botany Bay holds an important position in Irish history - more for transportation of convicts rather than anything to do with its botanic beauty. I wonder how and when this square obtained its name? .... "Asked and answered" as they say. Beachcomberaustralia sourced an amazing "letter to the editor" entry from an 1875 edition of the Australian Town and Country Journal. Which offers an entertaining answer to the question. The story goes that this area of the college was prone to flooding (and worse). And students would throw undesirable visitors into the quagmire. As a type of punishment - which "some wag" likened to transporting undesirables to Botany Bay in what were then the penal colonies.... Bryansford House, Newcastle, Co. Down
Description: For a dull and wet Thursday morning in Dublin we head up to the "Wee North" today to gather some sunshine in Newcastle! Bryansford House looks like a significant pile with a certain symmetry to its frontage suggesting - almost- a semi-detached building? We learned that this house was the main estate house at Tollymore Park demense - now an NI state forest park of the same name. Originally built for James Hamilton, Earl Clanbrassil in the 1730s, it was the family seat for several generations of the Earls of Roden, who developed the estate lands. The house itself fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1952. The estate, its forest, follies, barns and bridges (some of which we have visited before) thankfully survive.... Renmore Barracks, Galway City - once home to the Connaught Rangers.
Description: The home station of the Connaught Rangers Regiment of the British Army is today's image from the Lawrence Collection. Once a proud and distinguished regiment with many battle honours, it became famous in the Irish context when members of the regiment mutinied in response to the 1916 uprising and the subsequent execution of the leaders. While the StreetView driver wasn't brave enough to approach the guard gate, the view from the road outside still matches-up. The NIAH entries provided by Niall McAuley (on the magazine and church) suggest c.1880 as the lower-bound for the image date range. And maybe even an upper-bound not long after (as everything does look spanking new).... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Lady's Island, Co. Wexford
Description: Believe it or not this photo was selected because it was felt that it would sit well in our "Focus on our Photographers" album. I will leave it up to you to discover the reason for its inclusion. As a bonus we have a lovely photo of Lady's Island. As quickly spotted by beachcomberaustralia, Niall McAuley and others, this image of the village and church of Lady's Island (at least partially through the gate arch of Lady's Island Castle) includes pieces of photographic kit in the right foreground. If the spare lens didn't give it away, as Niall points-out, we've seen this box a few times before. On this occasion it has followed French to the site of a(nother) holy well on Lady's Island Lake... Viscount FitzGibbon who fell at the
Description: We may have visited this scene before if not this photograph. A fine glass plate from the Eason Collection of Viscount Fitzgibbon which stood opposite Shannon Rowing Club on Sarsfields Bridge over the river Shannon! I am curious to know what that stack/chimney is to the left rere of the statue?... Though we've seen this statue before (from other angles), this vantage gives us a better view of the plaque. It reads: "To commemorate the bravery of / Viscount Fitzgibbon / 8th Royal Irish Hussars / & of his gallant companions in arms / natives of the county & city of limerick / who glouriously fell in the Crimean War". As per the various contributions, Fitzgibbon was reported 'missing presumed dead' during the Charge of the Light Brigade, seemingly inspiring Rudyard Kipling’s short story ‘The Man Who Was’. The statue was blown-up by the IRA in 1930, and a monument to the events of 1916 later placed on the plinth. The cannon are still apparently outside the Harbour Master's office... Croagh Patrick, Westport, Co. Mayo and a whole lot more.
Description: Down the Wesht today to Co.Mayo, God help us, with a distant view of Irelands Holy Mountain and a whole lot more! This lovely Royal sized glass plate has some excellent detail on the coastal location, with mixed rolling stock on a railway siding to add to the interest. We may not have a dog, but we do have a horse in this landscape - otherwise largely empty of signs of life. While today's contributors have identified several of the buildings visible between Westport Harbour and Croagh Patrick (including the bridge to Rossbeg and some of the larger houses on the landform), they all date to the early 19th century. And so are not much help in dating the image. The general consensus though is that the Midland Great Western Railway rolling-stock in the foreground probably dates to the latter-half of the date range. Perhaps more likely to be c.1900 than mid-19th century.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Likely latter half of this range. A fine set of fetlocks: Commissioned by Mr. T. Widger
Description: The full title on this is "Meet at Gracedieu(?) - commissioned by Mr. T. Widger". Maybe Mr. Widger rode to the hunt, and perhaps wanted an image of both he and his steed recorded for posterity(?) It certainly is a fine shot of the pair, and there appears to be a "Big House" in the background. There is an area in Waterford called Gracedieu but was that named after a house or vice versa? It does sound familiar.... The consensus is that this is a member of the Widger family from Waterford. Pretty much all of whom (of working-age) were recorded in the 1911 census as horse-dealers or trainers. The suggestion is that Poole captured this image at Grace Dieu estate, a short distance south of Waterford, and which we have visited before. Based on similar images in the catalogue, and the fashions visible, it seems likely this dates to the first decade or so of the 20th century.... Photographer: A. H. Sunshine, shadows, leafy trees and a fountain in Blessington, Co. Wicklow.
Description: In what appears to be a lovely sunny afternoon in Blessington, when the photographer captures a beautiful image of the Market Hall and Monument/Fountain. This is a beautiful area - some of which has been changed completely when a nearby valley was flooded to provide water and power to the nearby Dublin region! Apart from the "missing belfry" that [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] noted, some of the discussion today was on how recognisable the same scene is today. Also noted was that the local names of the monument and fountain seem to vary - with most sources refering to it as the "Downshire Monument", at at least some as the "Boyle Monument". Whatever the proper title, it seems likely this view of the monument and market house was captured in the first-half (rather than latter-half) of the 1900s-1930s range.... Bombingen av Namsos
Description: Beskrivelse: Den tyske invasjonen innebar at 24 byer og tettsteder i Norge ble bombet våren 1940. Det gjaldt bl.a. Arkivreferanse: PA-1667U2_004 The German invasion resulted in 24 towns and villages being bombed in the spring of 1940. This included Molde, Kristiansund, Steinkjer and Namsos. The National Archives of Norway has received 64 photographs (paper positives 9 x 12 cm) that according to information on the envelope are taken in July 1940 in Kristiansund, Steinkjer and Levanger. The photos have belonged to engineer Hallvard Løken (1908-1995). He was a good amateur photographer and might very well have taken the photos himself. Thanks to help from others, we have been able to pinpoint many of the locations, but not all of them, and the National Archives of Norway is very happy to receive further information.
