Group of boys in uniform marching at the corner of Portobello and Richmond Street South
Description: Continuing with "Clarke Week" (not to be confused with Discovery channel's "Shark Week"), today's candid shot prompts questions about where these youngsters were off to. A number of theories were offered on who the boys might be, and perhaps the most likely is [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]]'s suggestion that they are associated with the Hibernian Marine School which was located for a time in nearby Rathmines. While we'd absolutely love to corroborate this (perhaps with another image of the school's pupils of uniforms), in the meantime we note that the building pictured was originally a hotel, as per the following from our friends at Archiseek:  The hotel was one of five operated between Dublin and the Shannon and opened in 1807 and operated until 1860 despite passenger services being stopped in 1852. Sited beside the former Portobello basin (now filled in), this is a simple classical building with nice proportions. The hotel was later converted into a nursing home where the artist Jack B. Yeats spent his last years. Photographer: Clarke, J. J. Two women walking past jewellers, Grafton Street
Description: This week we're doing something a little different - and posting an image a day from a single collection: the Clarke Photographic Collection. Those who have followed the stream for a while will be familiar with John J Clarke (1879-1961), who took many of his photographs from 1897 to 1904 while a medical student in Dublin. Unlike the studio shots of Poole or the professional commissions of French, his shots tend to be snapshots. And while therefore perhaps not as technically composed, they candidly capture the street-life of Dublin (and sometimes Donegal) from the turn of the century. This one for example is a lovely study of fashions in clothes and shop displays.... One of our International friends (Canadian) La Belle Province is I think a traditional lurker, obviously she looks in every day but, only comments when we have a photo with nice hats or fashion from bygone days. Over the years she has become our go to fashion expert. It is always good to see you here!! Although Edmund Johnson Limited is long gone, they will be remembered because of their association with three Icons of Ireland past present and future, The Sam Maguire, The Ardagh Chalice and The Liam McCarthy Cup. Thanks to [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] for the connections. Photographer: Clarke, J. J. The Colony, Achill
Description: Sounding a little ominous (perhaps somewhere Patrick McGoohan might have spent some time), today we visit "The Colony" on Achilll island. Depending on when French captured this image, it's likely that Nangle's mission was all but closed by this time.... Sharon.corbet links us to a history of "The Colony" which gives us the following:  The land on which the Achill colony was built was leased from the island’s landlord, Sir Richard O’Donnell, and was located near the village of Dugort, under the shadow of Achill’s highest mountain, Slieve Mór. Edward Nangle moved permanently to the completed colony in 1834, along with his wife Eliza, his family, and his most loyal supporters. The missionary settlement consisted of male and female schools, the minister’s house, a church, a hotel, and a printing press. We can also see two Dogs at the main gate which will keep some of our regulars happy! This photo was selected by Flickr Explore - check out our explore album if you have a few spare moments. Northern Bank, Mohill, Co. Leitrim
Description: Another building for today with a unique design for a bank. While we haven't been able to refine the date range significantly, there's a suggestion that the lady tending the window boxes (yes - there she is over the door on the flat roof) is a member of the household of William Charles Smith, who was manager of the branch in the early 20th century. We also learn that the building's Art Nouveau architecture was possibly designed by W.H. Byrne or Godfrey William Ferguson, and dates to c.1905 (plus or minus a few years)... Belfast Castle, Belfast, Co. Antrim
Description: From one great rock (that caught the Dunbrody) to another which anchors Belfast Castle. With thanks to all our contributors below, we've learned a little more about the 19th century design and construction of Belfast Castle - and had our interest piqued by the left-field reference which Sharon notes in the Dictionary of Irish Architects:  Name [architect]: LANYON, LYNN & LANYON  Building: CO. ANTRIM, BELFAST, BELFAST CASTLE  Date: 1868-70  Nature: New Scottish Baronial house on slope of Cave Hill by John Lanyon, for Marquess of Donegall. Church, Arranmore, Aran Islands, Co. Galway
Description: From yesterday's luxurious properties to the spartan settings of the Aran Islands at the turn of the last century. With thanks to derangedlemur, O Mac, DannyM8, and in particular Mike (Inverarra), we have additional detail on the location and destiny of this little church. "Eaglais San Thomáis" (the church of Saint Thomas) served the Anglican/COI community in Kilthomas from the 1840s to the 20th century. As per the images and "potted history" which Mike shares, the church is now a ruin, and the roof was removed in the mid-20th century. While likely mirroring an overall decline in the island's population (from ~2500 when the church opened in the 1840s, to ~800 in the 2011 census), it's worth noting that there are three churches still serving the island's community: Kilronan RC (dating from 1905), Eochaill chapel (1833) and Eoghanacht church (1958). Thanks again all! Description: TWAM Ref: TWCMS:M4445 A. Reyrolle & Co. Ltd was founded by Alphonse Reyrolle (1864 - 1919), a French engineer who established a small switchgear shop in London in 1886. In 1901 his business moved to Hebburn and the firm began to grow with the recruitment of Henry Clothier. Clothier helped them develop large switchgears for power stations, a product the company became famous for. Over the years, Reyrolle continued to grow, seeing a number of mergers. Most notably with C.A Parsons in 1968 and Rolls Royce in 1989. The Hebburn site is now owned by Siemens who acquired the company in 2005. This photograph shows construction at A.Reyrolle & Co. Seymour Street Methodist Church, Lisburn, Co. Antrim
Description: Today we have two for the price of one in the Stereo Pairs collection. An ornate church with an even more ornate fountain before! Identified as Lisburn's Seymour Street Methodist Church, we suspected the fountain was long gone - but to where? Thanks in particular to sharon.corbet and beachcomberaustralia for finding out more about the fountain - it was evidently one of many so-called "Wallace Fountains" (Wikipedia). Unfortunately the guys have confirmed that this example was likely dismantled for its metal during the Great War - it certainly seems absent from the 1920s photos which Sharon shares. Based on confirmation that the church and fountain both date to the mid-1870s, our intrepid duo also refined the catalogue date range to between 1875 and 1880. Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence Collection: The Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection Date: ca. 1860-1883 (but likely 1875-1880) NLI Ref: STP_2290 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Description: Though labelled as "Reelan Bridge, Lifford, Co. Donegal" in the catalogue, after some initial location theories that were closer to Lifford, it was confirmed that we are a little further afield. Within a short space of time, both O Mac and Niall McAuley suggested a bridge over the Shallogan River ("An Sealgán"). Though still in Donegal, this puts us 60kms from Lifford and makes the hill in the background an Shalloganbeg ("Cnoc an tSealgáin Bhig"). The modern-day streetview topography seemed pretty convincing, and the guys suggested that the photographer was standing close to where the 1890s Stranorlar and Glenties rail line was just built, was being built, or was to be built. Not satisfied with this, O Mac actually went to Straboy. In doing so he not only confirmed the location, took a few "today" shots, and established a likely date range - but even settled the "what is the 'house' pictured" debate. As per his note below, local knowledge suggests it was probably a hen coop. Kudos and thanks from us in Library Towers! View of some of the Stalls at the Show, Ballsbridge, Co. Dublin
Description: From one venerable Irish institution, Rebellion, to another, the Royal Dublin Society. This image is of the main hall at the RDS during either the Spring or Horse Show in the early 20th century. The comments below offer interesting insights into the exhibitors and, importantly for us, a more refined date range for the photo. Thanks to all - and in particular Carol Maddock whose investigations into the stand-holders and numbers would seem to establish a date or dates. We've updated the range for the entry (on Flickr at least for now), and mapped the image to the RDS Ballsbridge exhibition centre main hall. Bell Bridge (Bealaclugga Bridge) County Clare
Description: Robert French took a few shots of this striking early 19th century bridge near Spanish Point in Clare (Miltown Malbay per the catalogue entry). Given that this was likely a famine relief project, the effort that went into the ornamentation is interesting. While the loopholes are fanciful, do we think the apparent coats-of-arms have meaning? beachcomberaustralia and guliolopez tell us that this bridge was built as part of famine relief works, I think most of us would immediately presume 1840's but no, this bridge was built in 1822. There was famine in certain western areas and as can be seen from the following quote thousands of people were involved in schemes like this. "A striking feature of the public works initiative in Ireland was the sheer physical demand placed on the framework by the vast numbers seeking relief. In July 1822, Griffiths reported there being ‘upwards of 10,000 persons at present employed in the County Limerick exclusive of farming laborers, mainly on road building" Photographer: French, Robert (1841-1917) Contributors: Lawrence, William (1840-1932) Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: ca. 1865-1914 NLI Ref: L_ROY_11323 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Belvelly Castle, Fota, Co. Cork
Description: For our Cork supporters today we have an old and very clear shot of the castle at the bridge from Fota. This shot generated a number of good stories today - leaving us with a tough job to select the most interesting ones. With thanks to all of today's contributors, without your help and support we would be at nothing: sharon.corbet, Niall McAuley, beachcomberaustralia, Carol Maddock + guliolopez. Ultimately perhaps Carol's "Blarney Castle" story wins by a whisker :) Even though Carol's find refers to events during WWI, Beachcomber references a similar story from 1904 - you would have to be up early in the morning to best the jarvies! Found this headed A Counterfeit Castle in Quidnunc’s An Irishman’s Diary... During the war [WWI] Queenstown, with its magnificent harbour, was the naval base for the American Fleet “operating in European waters”. Consequently, the town was constantly crowded with sailors on “shore leave”. Cork City was out of bounds, and the people of Queenstown were hard put to it to provide entertainment for these warriors of the sea. Now Blarney Castle proper stands about 21 miles from Queenstown, too long a journey for a horse to do in an afternoon, so the enterprising jarveys of the district evolved a scheme which brought much diversion to the Yankees and a golden harvest to themselves. Fortunately for that scheme, the American sailor is not of so inquiring a mind as his countrymen of the tourist class. About two miles from Queenstown there stands an old ruin, Belvelly Castle. Structurally, it is somewhat similar to Blarney Castle, sufficiently so, at any rate, to deceive the sailor from overseas. And here he was brought in dozens to see the Castle and kiss the Stone! I once inquired from a jarvey which stone they represented to be the famous one. “Yerra, anyone at all, sir, as long as ’twas a bit hard to git at”, he replied. “Most of them stones round the top have had their share. Shure, there’s bits of chewing-gum stuck all over them”. Thus was this complete, but harmless, deception successfully carried out. Garinish Island Tower, Glengarriff, Co. Cork
Description: Lawrence takes us on a visit to a Garinish Island that is more muckheap than garden. Is this now part of the fabulous gardens??? I am with sharon.corbet with regards to the inadequacies of some of the mapping systems, the flicker system has no entry whatsoever for Garnish Island. The best comment in my opinion was posted by John Spooner wherein he relates an extract from: "Our Autumn Trip through Munster part VI" which was published in The Huddersfield Chronicle and West Yorkshire Advertiser on Saturday, November 21, 1863 I have spoken of the little island with the Martello tower, lying about a mile down the Bay, from Glengariff, it is called Garnish Island. You may have a boat at the inn-door, and sail down to the place, and be back in less than an hour, and it is well worthy of a visit. A little two-oared boat swiftly bore us thither, and the boatman told us how that the tower there was built " for fear of the French;" for the year after "the invasion," fortifications were erected along the Bay, and on most of the islands. We landed at a rude jetty, rather hurriedly as the boatmen seemed to think, for one of them exclaimed: "Aisy, aisy, Sir! betther be sure than sorry," - a good maxim, worthy of being noted, like those of captain Cuttle. The "invasion" referred to (as the article explains) was the attempt in 1796 to land a Fench army of 15000 men (with arms for 50000 more) in Bantry Bay. Castle Gate, Mohill, Co. Leitrim
Description: For those who specialise in Historic buildings or modern transport this shot has everything they'll need! Neddy looks very content outside the castle gates:-) Carol Maddock Informs us of the demise in 1902 of the man of the big house associated with this gate (Mohill Castle). Death of Sir Hugh Crofton, Bart. On Tuesday morning Sir Hugh Denis Crofton, Bart., J.P., died at The Castle, Mohill, from pneumonia, following an attack of typhoid fever. The deceased baronet was only in his 24th year, and was unmarried. He was a graduate and B.A. of Cambridge University. He was recently appointed to the Commission of the Peace for County Leitrim, where he owned a large property. As a landlord, Sir Hugh Crofton was very popular, and much regret is expressed by all classes in the district at his early demise. He is succeeded in the title by his brother, Sir George Morgan Crofton, of the Irish Guards. Main Street, Swords, Co. Dublin
Description: Here we are in Swords the home of Fingal County Council. It would be fantastic if we could tie this photo in some way to the parish registers of the area see - Parish Registers Take a bow young sharon.corbet for finding a link to the Swords parish register, wherein she found the baptism of one Jacobus Savage, on 5th November 1879 son of Michael Savage & Elenora Connor. Sharon also tells us that Jacobus is in the 1901 census as James Savage a car driver. It seems that the Savage family has a long and continuing association with Swords. This photo was selected by "Explore" today, our 38th entry. Rebuilding Castlebar, Co. Mayo
Description: This shot of Castlebar is in stark contrast to the modern, bustling and thriving town we know today! This is the last of our County towns for this week and perhaps an opportunity to search the Parish Registers Having read the comments below and after taking a long second look at the photograph, I an inclined to side with O Mac argument that this is a scene of renewal rather than a scene of ruin. It seems that the terraced houses in the mid right of the photo are newly built and it looks like there will be more construction at both ends of that terrace. Consequently I have changed the title from "The ruins of Castlebar, Co. Mayo" to "Rebuilding Castlebar Co. Mayo". General View, Tallaght, Co. Dublin
Description: This view of Main Street, Tallaght in South County Dublin has changed dramatically in the meantime. If anyone feels inclined to try out the Parish Registers to find the parents of the child in the picture it is as easy as clicking on the link! An interesting photograph, the group of 4 houses are just being finished, I wonder why they were of interest? the orientation of the front doors on the two outside housed is very strange indeed. Síle C Tells us that The cottages were designed by Thomas Joseph Byrne, Clerk and Architect of South Dublin District Rural Council. See her link below to a South County Dublin Libraries Exhibition on his works. Parish Registers for Nenagh, Co. Tipperary
Description: Listed in the catalogue as "Street, Nenagh, Co Tipperary", we selected this image (with others to follow later) to highlight the Parish Registers at NLI launch. We wondered whether anyone in this turn-of-the-century image was listed in the registers for the parish of Nenagh? Were the shopkeeping Hogan or Ryan families baptised locally? Or, after their marriages were recorded in the register, did many newly weds retire to the Railway Hotel for their reception? With thanks to sharon.corbet and guliolopez, we not only confirmed the location and info on the Ryan and Hogan families from the Barrack Street Census, but crucially some likely candidates for the baptism records of Michael Ryan and Michael Hogan from the parish registers of May 1863 and March 1879 Thanks again all! Alexandria School's
Description: Alexandra Schools on a much-changed Earlsfort Terrace in Dublin... The buildings on the right are Alexandra College which was founded in 1874 at No.6 Earlsfort Terrace. By 1879, a new hall and theater was constructed alongside. Over time, they acquired several more houses and by 1889 a new building by William Kaye-Parry was constructed next door to the college as Alexandra School. In 1972, the school and college relocated to Dartry and the entire site cleared – by this time, it was almost all of one side of Earlsfort Terrace. The site sat empty for some years before being developed as a hotel and office complex. A building by Lanyon, Lynn & Lanyon at No.12 was also demolished at this time. The building on the left was was built by the The Dublin Exhibition Palace and Winter Garden Company for the 1865 exhibition - The heir to the throne, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, to rapturous enthusiasm, performed the grand opening, on 9 May 1865. In all a huge 930,000 visitors attended the Exhibition between 9 May and 9 November. The Company arranged special railway and other concessions and the Palace was equipped with a telegraph centre, post office branch, railway office, and facilities for a large number of international newspapers. Many thanks to Niall McAuley Inverarra eyelightfilms derangedlemur D.G-S and sharon.corbet for their valued contributions. Description: To matters maritime to begin the week, a stranded ship on a shore with supporting craft around it. With thanks to sharon.corbet, guliolopez, swordscookie, Derek, patrick.vickers1 and B-59, it seems that this image (probably a later copy by Poole) shows the 1896 grounding of the SS Dunbrody on the River Avon in England. The ship was refloated during Christmas 1896, and continued to service the Waterford Steamship Company's route from Bristol to Waterford into the early 20th century. If we can refine the location a little, we'd love to pin a location for this on the map.... Photographer: A.H. Octagon, Westport, County Mayo
Description: For many towns a four-sided square is sufficient. Not so for the "planned town" of Westport - where norms are doubled to form "the Octagon". The octagonal monument in the centre was originally erected in the mid-19th century in memory of a wealthy local - a decade or so ahead of the first date in our catalogue's "1865-1914" range. But we wondered whether we could refine the date range for this Lawrence/French shot. That the statue still had a head and appeared unaffected by damage that beachcomberaustralia noted confirmed that the image likely didn't exceed the late 1910s. However, our eagle-eyed sleuths were able to refine further. sharon.corbet was quick to point out that the distant spire put the earliest date in the 1870s. O Mac PRO suggested that the electric lights might imply an early 20th-century date - and this seems to have been confirmed by a "1902" date in the graffiti spotted by beachcomberaustralia (and corroborated by Niall McAuley and derangedlemur). Ultimately through the community's efforts we have learned that the monument did succumb to various attempts, and the original statue of George Glendenning (1770-1843) was replaced by one of St Patrick in the late 20th century... Photographer: French, Robert (1841-1917) Contributors: Lawrence, William (1840-1932) Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Listed as ca. 1865-1914 (but likely ca. 1902) NLI Ref: L_ROY_07558 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Doolough
Description: FIshing weather. This is part of one of the nicest drives in Ireland. This is Doolough or Doo Lough one of three lakes that make up the Delphi Fishery, it was called Delphi by the Marquis of Sligo who used to own the fishery. Doolough is famously known for the "The Doolough Tragedy" see O Mac PRO link below. On Friday 30 March 1849 two officials of the Westport Poor Law Union arrived in Louisburgh to inspect those people in receipt of outdoor relief to verify that they should continue to receive it. For some reason the inspection did not take place and the officials went on to Delphi Lodge – a hunting lodge – 12 miles (19 km) south of Louisburgh. The people who had gathered for the inspection were thus instructed to appear at Delphi Lodge at 7am the following morning if they wished to continue receiving relief. For much of the night and day that followed therefore seemingly hundreds of destitute and starving people had to undertake what for them, given their existing state of debilitation, was an extremely fatiguing journey, in very bad weather. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doolough_Tragedy I hate the flickr MAPPING TOOL Photographer: Robert French Collection: The Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Circa 1865-1914 NLI Ref: L_ROY_00897 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Swiss Cottage, Cahir, Co. Tipperary
Description: What a lovely photograph to start the week. A delightful "cottage orné" built in the early 1800s by Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Glengall to a design by the famous Regency architect John Nash. Its interior contains a graceful spiral staircase and some elegantly decorated rooms. The wallpaper in the Salon manufactured by the Dufour factory is one of the first commercially produced Parisian wallpapers. Situated on an elevated site with access by stone steps. The above is from the link to Heritage Ireland posted by sharon.corbet . O Mac PRO supplied all the required mapping information. His Streetview link is worth a look.. Everything was proceeding quietly until we heard the dreaded "Accidental Death Klaxon" Thank you Carol Maddock. This was accompanied by a chilling story of the death of Mr Peter Doherty in tragic circumstances. Mr Doherty was the caretaker of the Swiss cottage at that time. Our great Australian contributor beachcomberaustralia Links us to a story from an Aussie visitor to the area in 1910, see below. The Quays, Wicklow, Co. Wicklow
Description: To finish this week we turn to matters maritime! The quays in Wicklow as we could only imagine them. That wee ship is a nice neat vessel and obviously well cared for OR brand spanking new? Niall McAuley Was working overtime today, he supplied all the required mapping information and manages to convincingly narrow the date range to between 1905 and 1912. patrick.vickers1 knows the river here very well and tells us "The berth shown is where the an old Brixham schooner used to be. Perhaps better known as the Susan Vittery, ex Brooklands. A record holder on the fruit run from the Azores, sunk in a gale in 1953 near the Tuskar. When the tide was going down my grandfather and others use to rake for mussels on the lower arches of the river. The scene shown does not look much different than seventy years ago ! Gothic revival castle
Description: Today we have a fine shot from the Stereo Pairs collection showing a "Toy" castle somewhere! These always remind me of AJ Cronins classic novel "Hatters Castle" Leonard Bentley identified the location very early in the day, well done. Thanks for all the comments, the most interesting I think from DannyM8 "Lough Cultra Castle had been the home of the Vereker family, who had the title Viscount Gort. The 3rd Lord Gort was ruined by the Famine, when he refused to collect any rents and gave large sums of money to charity, with the result that the estate was bankrupted and sold up by the Encumbered Estates Court in 1851. The castle was bought back post World War II, by the 7th Viscount Gort. It was restored by the family. It has since been sold again" Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence Collection: The Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection Date: between ca. 1860-1883 NLI Ref: STP_1693 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Children of Mary.
Description: Group, Children of Mary. : commissioned by Rev. Mother, Convent of Holy Faith, Mullinavat. Today we will see the living rather than the dead, this fine group of young ladies in their regalia from the Poole Collection! "These Children of Mary Sodalities first embraced the pupils and orphans of the schools and institutions of the Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul.....The badge adopted by the Children of Mary Immaculate is the miraculous medal, suspended from a blue ribbon. The Children of Mary organization flourished in the mid 20th century. Young women went through a period of aspirancy of six months prior to acceptance as a fully fledged child of Mary, who had the right to wear the distinctive blue cape and carry the blue cape of a Child of Mary. When a Child of Mary married, she was embraced on arrival on the Church steps by other Children of Mary who removed the blue cape from over her wedding gown." Photographer: A. H. Main Street, Naas, Co. Kildare
Description: This morning we bring a particularly bright view of the Main Street in Naas, Co. Kildare! I doubt that any one of us has ever seen this street so clear of traffic:-) Continuing our promotion of the Parish Registers here is a link to the register for Naas! So much talk about traffic ot the lack of it in Naas, I have spent mant hours there in the past. Now with the M7 you pass by without even noticing, this photograph shows what a very nice town Naas actually is. It was the traffic which made me dislike it! sharon.corbet Using the Census and the Parish Registers picked up an 1871 Baptism in the Degnan family, "Emily Cooper and John Degnan had a daughter Emily Mary Anne in 1871. By 1901 she's married to an Albert Carleton and has two children Emily A. and Ellen P. (Who I presume are the Alberta and Patricia Carleton living with their grandparents in 1911. (The registery is pretty illegible, I admit, but I found a transcription elsewhere.)" Anyone for cricket? Academical College, Coleraine
Description: "School building, 2 storey (3 in central wing) 3 bays deep, 11 wide, professors in foreground boys with cricket bats" Keeping with our academic theme, the "zoomed" view of this stereo-pair (or at least one half of it) has a lot to offer. From the well-dressed professors, to bowler wearing cricket players, to the myriad chaps peering from windows, there's a lot to take in. While the catalogue listing didn't offer us a specific location or date, Dr O Mac came back in double-quick time to establish that this is Academical College in Coleraine - and a firm suggestion that the photo was likely taken within a decade of the college's opening in 1860. (So on the early side of the 1860s to 1880s range) Proposals for a grammar school in the town were first put forward in 1846 and then shelved during the economic crisis which accompanied the Great Irish Famine. Built between 1854 and 1860 – during which time the projected cost of £2000 had exactly doubled – the new school began operation with two masters and fourteen boys. The size of the school peaked at around 1100 boys in the 1970s, and today enrolment stands at slightly below 700.
