Main Street, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo
Description: To Mayo, God help us, this morning with a view of a typical Irish town. It is thought that the town grew up around St Mary's Augustinian Friary (popularly referred to as "the Abbey"), which was founded in 1348, according to local tradition. The town and the surrounding hinterland is steeped in history and contains an extraordinary concentration of megalithic monuments. Brick turretted tower
Description: Brick turretted tower, corner - bastion of fort over water, cannon at embrasures Believe it or not, I was surprised when ZMB identified this as Shane's Castle, especially after the photo purporting to be Shane's Castle on Thursday last. You live and learn. By the way, Zoe got within a few minuets, so very well done. Shane's Castle is a ruined castle near Randalstown in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The castle is on the north-east shores of Lough Neagh. Built in 1345 by a member of the O'Neill dynasty, it was originally called Eden-duff-carrick.Shane MacBrien O'Neill changed the name to Shane's Castle in 1722. In more recent times the castle grounds have been used as set locations in Game of Thrones. Dunmore East, Waterford
Description: High angle long shot village over small cliffs to beach and bay with many small boats, low hills, in background. beachcomberaustralia had the location of this photo identified in jig time as Dunmore East, Co. Waterford, he should enjoy his day in the sun, as derangedlemur confidently predicted that if he had been here at the time he would have been quicker! If ifs and ands were pots and pans (there'd be no work for tinkers' hands). Beachcomber also tells us that "In about 1812 a decision was made at Westminster to create an entirely new landing point for passengers and mails coming to Ireland from London and southern England. The location selected was Dunmore East and £118,000 was set aside for the erection of a pier there. So in 1814 dramatic changes took place when Alexander Nimmo, the Scottish engineer (builder of Limerick's Sarsfield Bridge) commenced work on the new harbour at Dunmore to accommodate the packet station for ships, which carried the Royal Mail between England and Ireland" Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence Collection: The Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection Date: between ca. 1860-1883 NLI Ref: STP_1880 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Mr. J. Redmond. M.P., Mrs. Redmond and girl
Description: This photo is one of my favourites for quite a while, I have seen quite a few photographs of the great man, but none better than this, in my opinion. We have Mr and Mrs Redmond and the consensus seems to be that the girl (or more appropriately young lady) is Johanna Redmond their daughter. I am going with our suggested catalogue date of 26th January 1914 and there is good evidence that he was in Waterford at that time. John Edward Redmond (1 September 1856 – 6 March 1918) was an Irish nationalist politician, barrister, MP in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party from 1900 to 1918. He was a moderate, constitutional and conciliatory politician who attained the twin dominant objectives of his political life, party unity and finally in September 1914 achieving the promise of Irish Home Rule under an Act which granted an interim form of self-government to Ireland. However, implementation of the Act was suspended by the intervention of World War I, and ultimately made untenable after the Conscription Crisis of 1918. Photographer: A. H. Salthill Railway Station and Hotel
Description: Salthill Railway station, people, including girl with pram, Monkstown, Co. Dublin. I am a great admirer of the Stereo Pairs Collection, I think that many photographers today would be very happy to take photographs half as good as some of the specimens we have the pleasure to see on this stream. Today we visit the leafy suburbs of South County Dublin, Salthill Railway Station to be precise, we see the Salthill Hotel in the background and a very modern looking bridge with spiral steps, which I presume is for the use of Hotel patrons. OwenMacC links to a nice photo of the spiral staircase - see below. John Spooner in his inimitable style tells a story of violence and a blood covered gouge, which had been used to inflict near fatal injuries. I have sounded the appropriate Klaxon!!. Do also see his comment on a very destructive storm on 5th January 1877. Thanks to "The Cookie Munster" swordscookie for details on the Station itself. I am very surprised that no one mentioned the signs in the middle of the photo!!!! Ridge Pool, Ballina, Co. Mayo
Description: King Street, Ballina, Co. Mayo Not King Street Ballina Co. Mayo, nor King Street, Ballina, New South Wales, this is a view overlooking the famous Ridge Pool and the old fish traps on the River Moy. The Ballina salmon weir has stood at the mouth of the River Moy, Ireland’s most prolific salmon river, for over 300 years. Originally built in the 16th Century, the weir has functioned since that time as a means of harvesting salmon that were channelled into one of its nine holding boxes as they made their way upstream to spawn. In these more enlightened times, all commercial exploitation of salmon on the River Moy has ceased and the ancient structure of the weir has now been modified to accommodate a series of electronic fish counters whose function is to provide valuable information on salmon stocks which will ultimately be used in the conservation of the species Photographer: Robert French Collection: The Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: [between ca. 1865-1914 NLI Ref: L_CAB_01999 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Main Street, Donaghmore, Co. Tyrone
Description: Main Street, possibly Dungannon, Co. Tyrone. derangedlemur with customary speed identifies this photo as Donaghmore, not Dungannon as our Catalogue suggests. Did you know that as per the 1911 census there was a Donaghmore, in Tyrone, Down, Meath, Queens County (Laois) and Wicklow, is this a record? I am surprised that there was no comment on the shop sign "Emigration Agency" which is clearly visible in this photo. I have visited the Donaghmore Famine Workhouse Museum in Co. Laois, and it was well worth the visit. The Museum aims to tell the story of the families who lived and died within the Famine Workhouse walls before, during and after the Great Famine. Dublin saves Cork
Description: Dublin and Cork fire brigade appliances. We were not sure if this photo was for our the Irish War of Independence or the Irish Civil War albums so we did not add it to either. We are no confident to change the date and add this to the Irish war of Independence album thanks to information supplied by Carol Maddock . She tells us that on Sunday 12th December 1920 a Dublin Fire Brigade contingent were conveyed by the special train to Cork to help with the fires during the Burning of Cork OwenMacC Tells us that the Dublin vehicle is a Leyland, "In 1909 the Chief Fire Officer of Dublin arrived at the Leyland works and told the astounded company that he had decided that they built the finest petrol truck chassis in the country, and that nothing but the best would be good enough for his proposed new fire engine. Though Leyland protested that they knew nothing of fire engine design, the astute fireman had come armed with his own ideal specification and Leyland agreed to build his engine" Photographer: W. D. Long Cars, Gorey, Co. Wexford
Description: What a lovely photograph, it even has not one but two dogs!!. It seems that Long Cars are a type of early public transport (strike free perhaps?) Carol Maddock refers us to an advertisment in the Irish Times from 1894 which states that we are only 4 miles from sea by long cars constantly running.... There are 13 Car Drivers in the 1901 census for the area, I am presuming they drive this type of car? ONLY 2 Months and 6 Days to go............ I cant wait for the 8th July, what about you? Best days of your life?
Description: Boy on donkey : commissioned by Mrs. Beecher, Castlefarm, Lismore. Thanks for all the comments, the consensus seems to be that the boy may be Edward Becher at about age 10. If this is correct it leads us to a grave record in France as follows: Rank: Lieutenant Date of Death: 19/07/1916 Age: 19 Regiment/Service: Royal Munster Fusiliers 8th Bn. Grave Reference: I. F. 7. Cemetery: MAZINGARBE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION Additional Information: Son of Edmund W. and Ella Becher, of Ardagh, Lismore, Co. Waterford. HMS Victoria on the River Tyne
Description: HMS Victoria, passing through the Swing Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1889 (TWAM ref. D.VA/24/3). She was launched at the Elswick Shipyard of Armstrong Whitworth on 9 April 1887. ‘Workshop of the World’ is a phrase often used to describe Britain’s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It’s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. By preserving these archives we can ensure that their legacy lives on. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. The road to Newcastle Co. Down
Description: Street in small country town, mainly 1-storey houses including, many thatched, church, square tower four spirelets, wooded and bare hill in background. The location of this photo was identified in a flash by derangedlemur as Newcastle Co. Down. Slieve Donard in the background was the big hint. Slieve Donard from Irish: Sliabh Dónairt, meaning "Dónairt's mountain") is an 850-metre (2,790 ft) mountain in County Down, Northern Ireland. Part of the Mourne Mountains, it is the highest peak in Northern Ireland and in the wider province of Ulster. Party of ten
Description: Party of ten people standing and reclining on an island or peninsula, with hills in the background. This lovely picture was taken in front of the Lake Hotel as can be seen in OwenMacC link to the OSI map below. Owen also informs us that the four stone columns are there as markers of the road in times when the lake is high. In the map link it does say that the area is liable to flood. On the face of the earlier OSI map (6") the Hotel premises is labeled as Castlelough. Description: Triangular green, railed, with square tapered column inscribed Corry on 6-step base, 2-storey public buildings 3-storey terraced streets, in background wooded hills in far background. It fascinates me that an old photo like this one can raise so many interesting stories. Such as, a duel in the Irish parliament involving Henry Grattan, water fountains in Newry, Dun Laoghaire and Australia and a Baron to the Throne of Poland in the reign of King Stanislaw August Poniatowski. Never Argue
Description: Solicitors window, Sligo, Co. Sligo. No this is not an April fools prank, there really was a firm of Solicitors in Sligo named Argue & Phibbs. Please read the comments below for some other (in)appropriately named firms. The partnership started in 1919 and the main men were Mr William Argue and Mr William Talbot Phibbs. The firm continued to trade (surely Solicitors do not trade!) as "Argue & Phibbs" until the death of Mr Phibbs in 1944. From www.sligotown.net Photographer: James P. O'Dea Collection: James P. My hat is better than yours!
Description: Block of buildings in park-land with people, modern Gothic style church, linked to main wing of eight bays width, porch. I'm not sure how she did it but sharon.corbet identified this location within minutes as St Peter's College, Wexford. Well done Sharon. In one of Sharon's links there is a list of "Notable Alumni", including - John Banville, Des Bishop, Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich, Neil Horan (Notorious for Grand Prix and Olympic marathon protests) and Colm Tóibín. The Chapel is the earliest in the country designed by Pugin as per Niall McAuley. Niall also suggests a date range of 1860-1877 with a distinct lean towards the 1860's. I have changed the date range accordingly. From today's Irish Times Rising commemoration programme to be unveiled at Collins Barracks. ......The National Library is developing a major online resource (it) will include thousands of letters and artifacts from the seven signatories and others. Donkey Power!
Description: Village street, donkey carts, people in foreground, modern small church in middleground. Thanks to derangedlemur we know that this is Castleconnell Co. Limerick. swordscookie aka Sean Mulligan tells us a few stories about his family who lived near here. "I was looking at this and never realised where it was until the Lemur (who else?) identified it! My antecedents came from there and indeed were connected (as servants) with the deBurgho's who are mentioned above! One of the girls in my grandmothers family ran off with a relative of that family and they eloped to Australia where their descendants are living today! We keep in touch and they have been over a couple of times! One of my fathers uncles helped found the rowing club in Castleconnell back in the 1880's and today my nephew and his daughters are involved as coach and crew! The granduncle was drowned when crossing from the quay in Limerick to a ship, a fact which was mentioned in a shot Carol put up of a steamer berthed in the city! Ladies and Gentlemen we have created two new albums for your enjoyment, one containing 46 photos, each with over 50,000 views and the second containing 8 photos, each with over 100,000 views. Glenarm, Co. Antrim.
Description: Raising the "Location Identified* flag in double quick time thanks to derangedlemur who identified this photo as being Glenarm, Co. Antrim. Specifically the river mouth of the Glenarm River. The Church is the Church of Saint Patrick in the parish of Tickmacrevan. The Church was built in 1768 and we see from A link to the DIA that "The church, which occupies the site of an ancient monastery, close to the shore near the town, was built in 1768, at the expense of the noble family of McDonnell, and was enlarged in 1822, by a loan of £500 from the late Board of First Fruits: it is a plain building with a tower and spire." Group of two : commissioned by Mr. Synnott. Solicitor. Enniscorthy
Description: I think DannyM8 might have finally cracked this one. He proposes John A. Sinnott as the older man and his nephew John Nicholas Scallan a recently qualified a solicitor as the younger man. Sharon thinks the photo may have been taken at the time Scallan joined his uncles firm. John N. Scallon gets married in 1909 and by that time the marriage notice mentions his late uncle - John A. Sinnott. I note that John A. Sinnotts father was Nicholas. sharon.corbet Sharon finds John Nicholas in the 1901 census as a Solicitors Apprentice. Therefore I am going to use the People Identified tag, which has been redundant for a while!! Niall McAuley and sharon.corbet Think the younger man might be Michael O'Dempsey and they point to a document that shows he was shot as a spy in 1922 - see here, it is worth a read Having made the error of posting this photo for a second time and then seeing the interest it generated we may do the same again - watch this space!! Celtic Cross, Aran Islands.
Description: One of our first photos from Inismore on the Aran Islands. As per Sharon the Cross was carved by the Farther of Pádraig Pearse. James Pearse, established a stonemasonry business in the 1850s a business which flourished and provided the Pearses with a comfortable middle-class upbringing. Pearse's father was a mason and monumental sculptor, and originally a Unitarian from Birmingham in England. swordscookie aka Sean Mulligan tells us about footwear called Pampooties which were used extensively on the island. Beachcomber provided the following, "They are formed of a single piece of untanned hide folded around the foot and stitched with twine or a leather strap. Hide from the buttocks was most often used. The hair was usually left and this improved the shoe's grip. The raw hide is kept flexible by use and the constant damp conditions of Western Ireland. However the shoes are not made to last. They are prone to rot and were usually kept for as little as a month or less. ... Vartry Lake, Roundwood, Co. Wicklow
Description: I would think reservoir is more correct than lake as it is man made. It took a long time to get a streetview but OwenMacC seems to have gotten it nearly spot on, thanks Owen. Before this reservoir was built most drinking water in Dublin was taken from the Canals and it was not a very suitable supply, whereas the water from the Vartry was soft and sweet. Sir John Gray, him of the statue in O'Connell Street and at one time the owner of the Freeman's Journal, was instrumental in having the waterworks located in Roundwood. He died at Bath in England on 9 April 1875. Shortly after his death, his contributions to the provision of the water supply, and the beneficial impact this had to conditions of public health in Dublin, were recognised in a memorial statue on O'Connell Street. Thanks also to Sharon for pointing out that we are actually in Co Galway rather than Mayo as stated in our catalogue. Description: A lovely quiet street that has known many changes! I believe we achieved a new record today - for the first time we had three street views - thanks for the effort. By the way, OwenMacC thinks that derangedlemur's one is the best representation of the photo!! sharon.corbet Tells us that The War Memorial visible today was added in 1921, so it's before that, I have updated the date range to reflect this. No mention of Whiskey - I will have to remedy that myself with the following short piece from official website Bushmills.com 1918-20 A new chapter : Bushmills Whiskey made an impression on some of the most prolific authors of the time. It gets a mention in Ulysses and, not surprisingly, in On Booze. I know that "On Booze" is by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I am not sure about the author of other buke!! Boat House, Belfast, Co. Antrim
Description: sharon.corbet tells us that the building was erected in 1897 so I have adjusted the dates to reflect that fact. There is a Titanic connection in that the building was opened in 1898 by Mrs W J Pirrie, wife of the managing director of Harland and Wolff; among the well-wishers was Mr Gustav Wolff, also representing Belfast craft of a larger size. Our resident Oarsman (retired?) swordscookie Tells us "I was rowing in the late 60's and early '70's and before the Troubles Belfast was a key regatta as were Banbridge, Portadown and the Portora Head of the River! We were in Belfast in 1970 and changed, got our boats ready here! I remember it well but even more the Lagan course which was like a series of S hooks!" The saddest note comes from robinparkes who posts his picture of the destroyed club house after a IRA bomb in 1972..

Kautokeino i ruiner
Description: Original bildetekst: Det vakre Kautokeino i det indre Finnmark frambyr idag et sørgelig syn. Men livet vender langsomt tilbake. Hittil er bygget to små hytter av tyske brakkelemmer blandt ruinene. Bildet viser den nyutnevnte ordfører i Kautokeino sin nybygde "residens". Grunnflaten er 4x4 meter og høyden 2 meter. Soviet troops forcing a fjord on their way to Kirkenes, Norway
Description: Original bildetekst: A German shell throws up a geyser beside their boat as Soviet troops proceed through a Norwegian fjord on their way to attack the enemy in the port of Kirkenes. Soviet troops liberated the vital port, which lies at the northeastern tip of Norway, on October 25, 1944. Also a submarino and air base, its capture deprives the Germans of the springboard from which they attacked Allied convoys delivering U.S. Lend-Lease supplies to Murmansk in Russia, and draws still tighter the ring of encirclement about Germany. This is a radiophoto sent from Moscow to the U.S. Arkivreferanse: NTBs krigsarkiv i Riksarkivet (RA/PA-1209/U/Uj/L0219g)
