Dev and the Rev!
Description: Day 4 of Tynan week A really interesting shot from todays Tynan image the significance of which the NLI cataloguer appears to have missed, probably due to her youth? Eamon deValera in conversation with a cleric accompanied by a politician, an aide-de-camp and the local Garda Superintendent before what appears to be the pupils of a boys school. I will be watching with bated breath to see if we can be as successful in identifying the other participants and the occasion? Following initial investigations by BeachcomberAustralia, sharon.corbet was able to identify the occasion, and Carol Maddock to corroborate it. In the process the participants were also confirmed. In short, this photo was taken on 4 April 1959 at the opening of the first Gaeltacht secondary school to be opened under a Roinn na Gaeltachta grant scheme. Ard Scoil Mhuire, in Derrybeg/Gweedore was opened on by Taoiseach, Eamon de Valera, with a blessing by Bishop McNeely of Raphoe, with army representation from Dev's aide-de-damp, Lt. Col. Sean Brennan and Garda representation from Insp Sheehan and Supt Convery.... Photographers: Denis Tynan 1923 - 2010 Collection: Tynan Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1950-1960. Almost certainly 4 April 1959. NLI Ref: NPA TYN34 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

I.S. Varian & Co., brushmakers. North Dublin
Description: To finish off the week we make a visit to the Mason Collection. What a great variety of brushes, I wonder can we identify all the different uses? In the 1911 Census there are 337 people with "brush" as part of the description of their occupation. These included: Brush Maker, Brush Finisher, Brush Drawer, Brush Trade, Brush Manufacturer, Brush Washer, Brush Merchant, Brush Borer and Brush Traveler. While I'm not sure what a "Brush Traveler" may have done, does the "St Louis - 1904" signage suggest that these particular brushes went on a journey? This particular Mary must admit to knowing nothing of I.S Varian & Co, brushmakers - before today's researches that is. Particularly striking is the longevity of the business. First founded in Cork in 1798, the company was based from Dublin's Talbot Street since 1856 - and still operating from Walkinstown into the 21st century. They had upwards of 360 employees in the 1940s - some of whom continued an interesting employee renunion tradition on unique dates (4/4/1944, 5/5/1955, etc) - until recent decades. The other interesting thing (clearly) about the business were the displays of their wares. Including their display at the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair. Given the mention of St Louis and 1904 in this particular display, it seems likely that (though probably not from the St Louis exhibition), our image dates from after this time. Perhaps 1904 - plus a few years..... Photographer: Thomas H. Mason Collection: Mason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1890-1910. Likely after c.1904. Mrs Joseph Plunkett and Sir William Orpen
Description: Two significant figures from the 1916 era, Grace Plunkett (nee Gifford) and Sir William Orpen the artist. A very posed photograph - but what can we find out about it apart from what has been added to the catalogue?: "Grace Gifford Plunkett, holding a brush and artist's palette, and William Orpen, three-quarter length portrait, printed on postcard. Grace Gifford studied under the Irish artist William Orpen at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art between 1904 and 1907." Today's contributors link us primarily to the Wikipedia entries for Grace Gifford and William Orpen. Both artists from Dublin they are pictured perhaps around the time of William's 1907 portrait of his then student. Within a decade of that portrait, Irish and global events would take these two on different paths. Orpen became a prolific war artist and would capture the horrors of the Somme during 1916/1917. Grace became a caricature artist, and involved with Joseph Plunkett and the Rising during Easter 1916. Grace famously married Plunkett in Kilmainham Jail, just hours before his death... Cargo ship unloading at the South Docks, Sunderland
Description: View of the cargo ship 'Calfa' unloading into railway waggons at the South Docks, Sunderland, January 1957 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/16913C). This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region’s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland’s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Description: View of Wear Hopper 3 and Wear Hopper 4 being prepared for launch at the shipyard of John Crown & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, 5 October 1959 (TWAM ref. DS.CR/4/PH/1/246/2/1). Blackett Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1960
Description: View along Blackett Street, Newcastle upon Tyne from near Grey's Monument, May 1960 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/24387C). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Delivery of a 50 ton rudder to the Elswick Works
Description: Delivery of a 50 ton rudder from Walker Naval Yard to the Elswick Works, Newcastle upon Tyne, 30 April 1964 (TWAM ref. DS.VA/9/PH/1/23620). A Tyne Improvement Commission hopper barge can also been seen in the background. ‘Workshop of the World’ is a phrase often used to describe Britain’s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It’s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. By preserving these archives we can ensure that their legacy lives on. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Visit of Prince Albert to Readhead's shipyard
Description: Visit of Prince Albert (the future King George VI) to Readhead's shipyard, South Shields, 16 April 1920 (TWAM ref. DS.RDD/5/8/2). This set celebrates the achievements of the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons. The firm has played a significant role in the North East’s illustrious shipbuilding history and the development of South Shields. The company began in 1865 when John Readhead, a shipyard manager, entered into business with J Softley at a small yard on the Lawe at South Shields. Following the dissolution of the partnership in 1872, it continued as John Readhead & Co on the same site until 1880 when the High West Yard was purchased. After Readhead’s four sons were taken into the business in 1888 the company traded as John Readhead & Sons becoming a limited company in 1908. In 1968 the company was absorbed by the Swan Hunter Group and in 1977 became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders. In the same year the last vessel was launched and the site was sold off in 1984. Readheads was prolific and built over 600 ships from 1865 to 1968, including 87 vessels for the Hain Steamship Company Ltd and over forty for the Strick Line Ltd. The shipyard also built four ships for the Prince Line, founded by Sir James Knott. The firm built vessels, which were involved in the major conflicts of the Twentieth Century. During the First World War they built patrol vessels and ‘x’ lighters (motor landing craft used in the Gallipoli campaign) for the Admiralty. During the Second World War the firm built tankers for the Normandy Landings. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Paramount Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne
Description: View of the exterior of the Paramount Theatre, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, September 1931 (TWAM ref. DX1677/1/1). The Odeon Cinema opened on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne on 7 September 1931. It as originally known as the Paramount Theatre but was taken over by Odeon in 1939. The Odeon’s luxurious décor made it one of the country’s finest cinemas and arguably the North East’s best loved. Most of the images in this album date from its opening and convey a real sense of the building’s elegance and beauty. Sadly the cinema closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2017. This image is from an album which was kindly donated to the Archives by the Northumberland & Newcastle Society.
