Darrell Figgis
Description: The name Darrell Figgis rings no bells for this Mary! I never heard of him before and have no idea what part he played in Irish Political life? Up to now the only Figgis I knew of was the bookshop, a heaven on Dawson Street where many happy hours were passed and purchases made. It is fitting however that this Figgis has a book tucked comfortably up under his oxter. What we learned about Darrell Figgis (1882–1925) today explained perhaps why some of us had not heard much about him. As an early member of the Irish Volunteers, a party to the Howth gun-running, an internee following the Rising and Anti-Conscription crackdown, a TD in the 3rd and 4th Dáil, and chair of the Constitution Committee, one might imagine Figgis was as notable as other early members of Sinn Féin. (Like Griffith, Collins, DeV, Brugha - about whom we know much more). However, as was perhaps not uncommon at that fractious time, Figgis fell-out with others in the new political landscape, and was subject to attack. Both physically and politically. A dapper figure in the early 1920s, in one attack, his detractors forcibly cut his trademark beard. Which perhaps helps date this image. A more tragic figure by the mid-1920s, following the deaths of the women in his life, Figgis took his own. A collection of his manuscripts was published after his death, and titled "Recollections of the Irish War".... Photographers: Various Collection: Irish Political Figures Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1917-1925. Likely after mid-1923 (beard attack). And before late-1925 (death). Kuno Meyer, head and shoulders, front facing portrait
Description: An Irish Political figure I must confess to never having heard of before. Kuno Meyer does not sound too Irish but then again neither did DeValera. I shall be watching with bated breath to see what light can be thrown on this man and his role in Irish history? And so we learned from our contributors (and indeed the Wikipedia article on Kuno Meyer) that Herr Doktor Meyer was a German academic who specialised in Celtic studies, and was part of the Gaelic revival movement. His stance at the outbreak of WWI was seemingly controversial at the time - though it looks like his 'good name' was posthumously restored by later Irish governments. This perhaps explains the inclusion of his portrait in the 'political figures' collection (most of which date from the same 1920s period....) Paramount Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne
Description: View of the exterior of the Paramount Theatre, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, September 1931 (TWAM ref. DX1677/1/1). The Odeon Cinema opened on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne on 7 September 1931. It as originally known as the Paramount Theatre but was taken over by Odeon in 1939. The Odeon’s luxurious décor made it one of the country’s finest cinemas and arguably the North East’s best loved. Most of the images in this album date from its opening and convey a real sense of the building’s elegance and beauty. Sadly the cinema closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2017. This image is from an album which was kindly donated to the Archives by the Northumberland & Newcastle Society. A dredger at the South Docks, Sunderland
Description: View of a River Wear Commissioners dredger at the South Docks, Sunderland, May 1961 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/26670J). This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region’s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland’s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Delivery of a 50 ton rudder to the Elswick Works
Description: Delivery of a 50 ton rudder from Walker Naval Yard to the Elswick Works, Newcastle upon Tyne, 30 April 1964 (TWAM ref. DS.VA/9/PH/1/23620). A Tyne Improvement Commission hopper barge can also been seen in the background. ‘Workshop of the World’ is a phrase often used to describe Britain’s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It’s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. By preserving these archives we can ensure that their legacy lives on. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Two great ships, side by side
Description: View of the 'Turbinia' beside the 'Mauretania' at Wallsend in 1907 (TWAM ref. DS.SWH/4/PH/7/6/58). The presence of the 'Turbinia' really gets across the size of the great ocean liner. The 'Mauretania' was one of the most famous ships ever built on Tyneside. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Coronation babies
Description: The Lady Mayoress, Violet Grantham, presenting cheques for £5 to the mothers of two 'coronation babies', born on 12 May 1937, the day of King George VI's coronation, 27 May 1937 (TWAM ref. DF.GRA/5/3). These images belong to a series of albums documenting John Grantham’s service to the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as its Sheriff 1924-1925 and its Lord Mayor 1936-1937. John Grantham was born in Blyth in 1877 and became a cinema proprietor in Newcastle. He was elected to the City Council in 1912 and became an alderman in 1932. The albums give us an interesting insight into the duties of Lord Mayor and Sheriff as well as a fascinating picture of the times. 2016 is the 800th anniversary of the creation of Newcastle's Mayoralty and Burgesses. The Waterford Cats?
Description: A team in Waterford with Kilkenny-like vertical stripes may not have been too popular in inter-county circles - but these lads look like they could cope with the slagging! A fine Poole shot of a hurling team to remind us that yet another All Ireland season is in full swing. With thanks to all of the contributions today, in particular Niall McAuley, swordscookie, j.coffey78, and guliolopez, we know that the team pictured (or at least most of them) challenged for the 1916 Waterford County Hurling Final around the time of this photo. They forced a replay with Ferrybank GAA club. But lost out to Ferrybank in the end 5-0 to 3-3. guliolopez helpfully links us to a write up of the replayed final which lists the team as:  T King (goal), J Hogan, L Cantwell, R Cantwell, P Durley, T Smyth, W Walsh, J Power, M Fitzpatrick, M Baldwin, P Purcell, W Sullivan, T McCormack, J Geary, R McKenna A player who didn't make the replay (D Quinn) may also be captured here. It's proposed that, as perhaps the person who commissioned the photo, J(ohn?) Hogan could be the captain pictured.... Photographer: A. H.
