Eleanor Hull, full-length portrait seated in chair, in a garden with a book and a cane
Description: I like days like this, the weather is improving and there is a hint of Spring in the air. I also like photographs like this one in that I have no knowledge whatsoever of the subject and I know that by the end of the day I will have learned everything there is to learn about her.... .... And indeed I have been enlightened. This is unequivocally Eleanor Hull (1860-1935), writer, scholar and journalist. Born in the UK, she studied Irish history, language and folklore in Dublin. She was a co-founder of the Irish Texts Society and a president of the Irish Literary Society. The general consensus is that this image was likely captured in London - where she spent her later years. Perhaps in the late 1920s or early 1930s.... Dev and the Rev!
Description: Day 4 of Tynan week A really interesting shot from todays Tynan image the significance of which the NLI cataloguer appears to have missed, probably due to her youth? Eamon deValera in conversation with a cleric accompanied by a politician, an aide-de-camp and the local Garda Superintendent before what appears to be the pupils of a boys school. I will be watching with bated breath to see if we can be as successful in identifying the other participants and the occasion? Following initial investigations by BeachcomberAustralia, sharon.corbet was able to identify the occasion, and Carol Maddock to corroborate it. In the process the participants were also confirmed. In short, this photo was taken on 4 April 1959 at the opening of the first Gaeltacht secondary school to be opened under a Roinn na Gaeltachta grant scheme. Ard Scoil Mhuire, in Derrybeg/Gweedore was opened on by Taoiseach, Eamon de Valera, with a blessing by Bishop McNeely of Raphoe, with army representation from Dev's aide-de-damp, Lt. Col. Sean Brennan and Garda representation from Insp Sheehan and Supt Convery.... Photographers: Denis Tynan 1923 - 2010 Collection: Tynan Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1950-1960. Safety curtain at the Paramount Theatre, Newcastle
Description: View of the safety curtain and proscenium at the Paramount Theatre, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, September 1931 (TWAM ref. DX1677/1/1). The Odeon Cinema opened on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne on 7 September 1931. It as originally known as the Paramount Theatre but was taken over by Odeon in 1939. The Odeon’s luxurious décor made it one of the country’s finest cinemas and arguably the North East’s best loved. Most of the images in this album date from its opening and convey a real sense of the building’s elegance and beauty. Sadly the cinema closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2017. This image is from an album which was kindly donated to the Archives by the Northumberland & Newcastle Society. Mrs Joseph Plunkett and Sir William Orpen
Description: Two significant figures from the 1916 era, Grace Plunkett (nee Gifford) and Sir William Orpen the artist. A very posed photograph - but what can we find out about it apart from what has been added to the catalogue?: "Grace Gifford Plunkett, holding a brush and artist's palette, and William Orpen, three-quarter length portrait, printed on postcard. Grace Gifford studied under the Irish artist William Orpen at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art between 1904 and 1907." Today's contributors link us primarily to the Wikipedia entries for Grace Gifford and William Orpen. Both artists from Dublin they are pictured perhaps around the time of William's 1907 portrait of his then student. Within a decade of that portrait, Irish and global events would take these two on different paths. Orpen became a prolific war artist and would capture the horrors of the Somme during 1916/1917. Grace became a caricature artist, and involved with Joseph Plunkett and the Rising during Easter 1916. Grace famously married Plunkett in Kilmainham Jail, just hours before his death... Nordic Chieftain under construction
Description: View of the OBO carrier 'Nordic Chieftain' under construction at the North Sands shipyard, Sunderland, February 1974 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/62742C). This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company’s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger. View along the Tyne Bridge during construction
Description: View of the Tyne Bridge captured from the Newcastle side during its construction on 15 February 1928 (TWAM ref. 3730/15/8). This shot shows very clearly the cross-bracing on the arch. The Tyne Bridge is one of the North East’s most iconic landmarks. These photographs were taken by James Bacon & Sons of Newcastle and document its construction from March 1927 to October 1928. They belonged to James Geddie, who was Chief Assistant Engineer on the construction of the Bridge with Dorman, Long & Co. Ltd. of Middlesbrough. Hudson Dock, Sunderland
Description: View of Hudson Dock North, Sunderland, c1898 (TWAM ref. 238/36). This image is taken from an 'Illustrated Guide to Sunderland and Environs' issued in 1898 by Sunderland Corporation and the River Wear Commissioners. This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region’s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland’s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Wedding group : commissioned by Mr. Magner, Clonmel
Description: Hats, fur coats, fur stoles, wing collars, centre partings, cows-licks and so much more to show how fashions have changed since this shot was taken for Mr. Magner way back when! I'm not too sure I would want to take on the mother-in-law second from the right! Quick off the mark this morning, sharon.corbet gave us the text of the newspaper announcement of the wedding pictured:  MAGNER AND SMYTH—October 9, 1917, at Tramore, by the Rev. T. O'Brien, C.C., Passage-West,- William J. Magner, eldest son of John Magner, Clonmel, to Catherine (Kitty) Smyth, daughter of Mr. Edmund Smyth, Cattle Dealer, Clonmel The date, most of the subjects, and possible town/county locations were therefore identified. And our intrepid band of Flickroonies quickly filled-in some background. Including that the groom (William Magner) was almost certainly from the Clonmel family behind the Magners/Bulmers cider brand. And that the bride's family (Kitty Smyth) was involved in the cattle and newspaper trades in the same town.... Photographer: A. H. Description: Looking along Barras Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne, towards the Haymarket, May 1961 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/26766A). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Discharging chromite at the Corporation Quay, Sunderland
Description: Discharging East African chromite from an ocean liner at the Corporation Quay, Sunderland, July 1949 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/3177H). Delivery of a 50 ton rudder to the Elswick Works
Description: Delivery of a 50 ton rudder from Walker Naval Yard to the Elswick Works, Newcastle upon Tyne, 30 April 1964 (TWAM ref. DS.VA/9/PH/1/23620). A Tyne Improvement Commission hopper barge can also been seen in the background. ‘Workshop of the World’ is a phrase often used to describe Britain’s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It’s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. By preserving these archives we can ensure that their legacy lives on. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Launch of the cargo ship Empire Scott
Description: View of the cargo ship 'Empire Scott' as she is launched at the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons Ltd, South Shields, 10 July 1941 (TWAM ref. DS.RDD/4/PH/1/523/2). This set celebrates the achievements of the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons. The firm has played a significant role in the North East’s illustrious shipbuilding history and the development of South Shields. The company began in 1865 when John Readhead, a shipyard manager, entered into business with J Softley at a small yard on the Lawe at South Shields. Following the dissolution of the partnership in 1872, it continued as John Readhead & Co on the same site until 1880 when the High West Yard was purchased. After Readhead’s four sons were taken into the business in 1888 the company traded as John Readhead & Sons becoming a limited company in 1908. In 1968 the company was absorbed by the Swan Hunter Group and in 1977 became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders. In the same year the last vessel was launched and the site was sold off in 1984. Readheads was prolific and built over 600 ships from 1865 to 1968, including 87 vessels for the Hain Steamship Company Ltd and over forty for the Strick Line Ltd. The shipyard also built four ships for the Prince Line, founded by Sir James Knott. The firm built vessels, which were involved in the major conflicts of the Twentieth Century. During the First World War they built patrol vessels and ‘x’ lighters (motor landing craft used in the Gallipoli campaign) for the Admiralty. During the Second World War the firm built tankers for the Normandy Landings. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Spit, spot, spats, striding strongly! Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Goff at the races!
Description: Bearers of a name long-associated with horses in Ireland, here we see Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Goff, who appear intent on the business of racing as they stride (I imagine) towards the winners enclosure! I love their "going to the races" dress and their seeming indifference to the obvious photographer taking this shot. What might have been even more interesting would be to see the more exuberant dress of the lady behind Mrs. Goff... Who were they, where was it and when? On the "when?" question, we owe particular thanks to Carol Maddock whose investigations have associated this image with an Irish Independent society entry from January 1914. It confirms that the image was captured shortly after Herbert William Davis-Goff became High Sheriff of Waterford. On the "who?", the peerage resource provided by Niall McAuley tells us that Margaret Aimée Davis-Goff (née Scott) was from a diplomatic family. Davis-Goff seemingly went to war in the months after this image, and became second baronet in the Davis-Goff Baronetcy after his father's death in 1918.... Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford Date: Catalogue range c.1901-1954. But confirmed as January 1914 NLI Ref: POOLEWP 2592 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie
