Launch of the 'Timor' at Bartrams shipyard
Description: Passenger and cargo ship ‘Timor’ sliding down the ways at the South Dock shipyard of Bartram & Sons, 2 May 1950 (TWAM ref. (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/4713T) Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a selection of images from its Sunderland shipbuilding collections. The set has been produced to celebrate Sunderland History Fair on 7 June 2014. It's a reminder of the thousands of vessels launched on the River Wear and the many outstanding achievements of Sunderland’s shipyards and their workers. These photographs reflect Sunderland’s history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering from the development of turret ships in the 1890s through to the design for SD14s in the 1960s. The Sunderland shipbuilding collections are full of fascinating stories. Some of these are represented in this set, such as the ‘Rondefjell’, launched in two halves on the River Wear by John Crown & Sons Ltd and then joined together on the River Tyne. The set also shows the vital part that Sunderland’s shipbuilding industry played during the First World War. William Doxford & Sons Ltd built Royal Naval destroyers such as HMS Opal, which served in the Battle of Jutland, while other yards constructed cargo ships to help keep these shores supplied. Captain von Müller drove the battered and defeated Emden ashore on North Keeling Island
Description: While escorting the first convoy of ANZAC troops bound for Europe on 9 November 1914 the Royal Australian Navy light cruiser HMAS Sydney engaged the infamous German commerce raider SMS Emden. The two light cruisers fought a 90 minute battle. The Emden’s guns had more range and fired first, but Sydney’s more powerful main guns pounded the Emden until it was disabled and beached on North Keeling Island. The Royal Australian Navy’s first great test of war ended in a comprehensive victory. HMAS Sydney illuminated at night during the week after the entry of the first Royal Australian Navy Fleet into Sydney Harbour October 4 1913
The exhibition 'Test of War - Royal Australian Navy in WW1 will open at the Australian National Maritime Museum 12 September 2014 and run until May 2015. This photograph is believed to depict the Royal Australian Navy light cruiser, HMAS SYDNEY I, moored in Sydney Harbour after the vessel's maiden voyage to Australia in 1913. A newspaper article describes the scene of the Australian fleet at night: 'The flagship Australia, with its thousand electric lights, was the centre of the picture, a thing of dazzling beauty.... the Australia and all of them burst into light, their lines, from hull to fore, and mainmast, picked out with countless electric lights. It was a veritable blaze of splendour.' Description: Amazingly the Smith brothers flew this early World War I bomber from England to Australia in 1919, in many short hops. Australia was no longer isolated by distance. This photograph is posted today, 19 February 2014, in memory of the huge aerial attack sent against Darwin by the Japanese, which destroyed the Harbour and much of the young city on 19 February 1942, with more bombs than were dropped on Pearl Harbour.
