The model, the camera and the Raleigh All Steel!
Description: This commercial modelling shot from the Tynan Collection shows an attractive young lady modelling a geansaí with traditional patterns. She is holding a movie camera but to be honest she doesn't look too sure about it. Perhaps, in this case, more a prop than a tool? Eleanor Hull, full-length portrait seated in chair, in a garden with a book and a cane
Description: I like days like this, the weather is improving and there is a hint of Spring in the air. I also like photographs like this one in that I have no knowledge whatsoever of the subject and I know that by the end of the day I will have learned everything there is to learn about her.... .... And indeed I have been enlightened. This is unequivocally Eleanor Hull (1860-1935), writer, scholar and journalist. Born in the UK, she studied Irish history, language and folklore in Dublin. She was a co-founder of the Irish Texts Society and a president of the Irish Literary Society. The general consensus is that this image was likely captured in London - where she spent her later years. Perhaps in the late 1920s or early 1930s.... Bottom shell plating of Northbank is put in place
Description: Bottom shell plating of the cargo ship 'Northbank' is put in place at the shipyard of William Doxford & Sons, Sunderland, 20 September 1956 (TWAM ref. DS.DOX/4/PH/1/819/1/3) This album documents the construction of the cargo ship ‘Northbank’ by the famous shipbuilding firm William Doxford & Sons at its Pallion yard, Sunderland. Most of these images are progress photographs, taken a week apart between September 1956 and January 1957 from approximately the same spot. The cargo ship Saxonia at Readhead's shipyard
Description: View of the cargo ship ‘Saxonia’ at the jetty of John Readhead & Sons Ltd, South Shields, February 1964 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/2507B). This set celebrates the achievements of the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons. The firm has played a significant role in the North East’s illustrious shipbuilding history and the development of South Shields. The company began in 1865 when John Readhead, a shipyard manager, entered into business with J Softley at a small yard on the Lawe at South Shields. Following the dissolution of the partnership in 1872, it continued as John Readhead & Co on the same site until 1880 when the High West Yard was purchased. After Readhead’s four sons were taken into the business in 1888 the company traded as John Readhead & Sons becoming a limited company in 1908. In 1968 the company was absorbed by the Swan Hunter Group and in 1977 became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders. In the same year the last vessel was launched and the site was sold off in 1984. Readheads was prolific and built over 600 ships from 1865 to 1968, including 87 vessels for the Hain Steamship Company Ltd and over forty for the Strick Line Ltd. The shipyard also built four ships for the Prince Line, founded by Sir James Knott. The firm built vessels, which were involved in the major conflicts of the Twentieth Century. During the First World War they built patrol vessels and ‘x’ lighters (motor landing craft used in the Gallipoli campaign) for the Admiralty. During the Second World War the firm built tankers for the Normandy Landings. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Wedding group : commissioned by Mr. Magner, Clonmel
Description: Hats, fur coats, fur stoles, wing collars, centre partings, cows-licks and so much more to show how fashions have changed since this shot was taken for Mr. Magner way back when! I'm not too sure I would want to take on the mother-in-law second from the right! Quick off the mark this morning, sharon.corbet gave us the text of the newspaper announcement of the wedding pictured:  MAGNER AND SMYTH—October 9, 1917, at Tramore, by the Rev. T. O'Brien, C.C., Passage-West,- William J. Magner, eldest son of John Magner, Clonmel, to Catherine (Kitty) Smyth, daughter of Mr. Edmund Smyth, Cattle Dealer, Clonmel The date, most of the subjects, and possible town/county locations were therefore identified. And our intrepid band of Flickroonies quickly filled-in some background. Including that the groom (William Magner) was almost certainly from the Clonmel family behind the Magners/Bulmers cider brand. And that the bride's family (Kitty Smyth) was involved in the cattle and newspaper trades in the same town.... Photographer: A. H. Casts a long shadow! An ESB tractor and wide load on the Naas Road.
Description: Perhaps the alternative title for this should be "wheeling by"? An image from the O'Dea collection of a giant piece of electrical equipment for the Electricity Supply Board (ESB). This was taken out on the Naas Road where it had apparently escaped the traffic congestion it had caused in Dublins city centre and was about to cause in towns such as Naas and Newbridge! The leading tractor, pulling the low-loader, is identified as a Scammell Transporter/Tractor. The precise spot on the Naas road is not (yet?) confirmed... Photographer: James P.
