Young people and man sitting on lock gate at Huband Bridge, Grand Canal, Dublin
Description: I think we have been to Huband Bridge before, I remember a conversation about a bolt on toilet! We have selected this transport related photograph (canal!) to celebrate International Women's Day, it would make it a great day if we could identify the two women (and the two men) sitting on the lock gate. Who pulled the plug?
Description: Apparently this is "Victoria lock - Empty for first time in 130 years, Meelick, Co. Clare". We did promise a transportation angle to all of our photographs to the end of the week, I think canal locks fit in nicely with that promise. But we may be stretching it a bit with tomorrows offering! The question is why was it necessary to empty this particular lock? [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] and [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] quickly asked and then answered an unspoken question on location on this one. Confirming that this isn't Clare, but County Offaly. And [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] has provided an answer to the one we did actually ask: it was emptied for maintenance. Sometimes the simple answers are best. (But then it was hardly the Riddle of the Sphinx.... :) (GMaps placeholder) Photographer: James P. O'Dea Collection: James P. Lord Carberry's Moraine at Bray
Description: After the excellent detective work yesterday, we are happy to present another early aircraft for your perusal. Indeed we will keep with a "transportation" theme right up to the end of the week! Between them, Niall McAuley, BeachcomberAustralia, and Carol Maddock were quick to pin-point the three main unknowns here (subject/place/date). The subject it is almost certain that this is the Morane-Saulnier H of John Evans Carbery, 10th Lord Carbery. And probably the man himself. The place is the Woodbrook Estate near Bray. And the date is 18 July 1914 - when a display of aerial acrobatics was put on by Carbery. That is only a fraction of the story however. As "looping the loop" over the lawn of a friend's house is probably the LEAST interesting thing the man seems to have done.... Photographer: Thomas H. 5c on pedestal, Ennis, Co. Clare.
Description: Compliments of Mr O'Dea we are in the vicinity of the West Clare Railway. I don't know about you but every time I hear about the WCR the tune of "Are You Right There Michael" comes mind!:  You may talk of Columbus's sailing  Across the Atlantical Sea  But he never tried to go railing  From Ennis as far as Kilkee Based on inputs today, it seems that while the "pedestal" in question was still in place for some years afterwards, the 5C locomotive itself has been restored to working order.... O'Connell, the Liberator
Description: O'Connell seems almost the forgotten man of Irish history these days. Once revered for his successful campaign for Catholic emancipation, today his name is seldom mentioned apart from the streets and monuments in his name. This must be one of the earliest photographs of the Dublin sculpture minus the fencing, seats and bullet holes? And indeed BeachcomberAustralia has confirmed that this image was likely captured sometime shortly after c.August 1882 (when the statue to O'Connell was first erected), but before c.August 1883 (when the figures at the monument's base were added). These four winged "victories" (conspicuous by their absense here) were added to represent O'Connell's believed virtues of patriotism, fidelity, courage and eloquence..... Nos 4 to 1, Congress Place, British Legion Houses, Waterford
Description: A commission for the Poole studio in 1948, 4 British Legion Houses in Waterford. The British Legion survived despite the antipathy towards all things British - but houses of this type may still have been a rarity(?) The general consensus is that these houses were built in the early 1930s (given the name which evokes the 1932 Eucharistic Congress), and were indeed home to ex-service men. Despite the apparent cracks in the plaster here, they were built stoutly enough that they are still a firm feature on Congress Place today..... (GMaps placeholder) Photographer: A. H. We all want a white wedding
Description: A wedding group taken by Mr. Poole for Mrs. O'Connor which shows his great skills and careful arrangement of the subjects. As near a symmetrical arrangement as he could manage with the placement of the personnel makes a very pleasing group and a fine photograph. The prevailing wisdom is that this image captures the marriage of Thomas O'Connor and Evelyn Erlwin on 16 October 1912. While the group may not have been in Grannagh at the time, there seems to be a connection to the village (also known as Granny) which sits close to the county boundary between Waterford and Kilkenny. (ed. As the O'Connor/Erlwin wedding was at least partly celebrated in nearby Kilmacow, Niall McAuley suggests that this image may have been captured there)..... Photographer: A. H. It's a long, long way from Clare to here...
Description: From the Siege of Derry to a big house somewhere in County Clare to end the week. I am not familiar with this place and wonder if it is still there and intact? It seems that the title for this image was more apt than we thought. In that it is a long way to Clare - and actually in County Cork :) Based on today's inputs it seems clear that this image should be in both our 'possible catalgue correction' tag, and our 'no longer standing' album. As suggested by our Flickroonies and confirmed by the ever-useful NUIG Landed Estates project entry, this was a property belonging to the Earls of Listowel, between Mallow and Fermoy in County Cork. I saw was because, As with many other houses of the landed gentry, it was destroyed by arson in the 1921. According to the NIAH entries, some of the stables and lodge houses do remain.... Terrapins on the roof
Description: The title for this O'Dea shot is "Platform New School - Terrapin Ltd. - Dermot Lalor fixing domelight, Finglas, Co. Dublin.". At that time Finglas was expanding rapidly so this could be any of several schools with new technology being introduced. Originally posted in a flipped/mirrored state (thanks Niall McAuley for the heads-up), following a correction it seems that this is definitely in Finglas, possibly on the roof of Coláiste Íde, looking north towards the Church of the Annunciation. The church (built at the same time these chaps were fitting windows nearby), was scheduled for demolition in recent years - owing to falling attendances and structural problems.... Parade will present arms - PRESENT ARMS!
Description: We start the week with an image taken just before a separation that must have seemed almost as catastrophic as Brexit - the creation of the Irish Free State! The inimitable Mr. Hogan gives us this fine image of soldiers on parade in a Dublin Barracks. The ranks are dressed, the sergeants are in place, the order to Present Arms has been given and all on parade are in that position of salutation!. Mr. Hogan must have been longing for a modern wide angle or even fish eye lens to capture the scene in its entirety. BeachcomberAustralia suggests that Mr. Hogan was on an upper floor opposite the parade square of the Royal (now Collins) Barracks. Beachcomber also highlights a catalogue note (missed before posting) that this image could capture the "1st Battalion, 62nd (Wiltshire) Regiment at their Ferozeshah Day Parade, in the Royal Barracks, Dublin, 1921".... Portrait of a lady
Description: The blessing of the Clonbrock Collection is that it gives us insights into a very privileged aspect of Irish society at a time of change. The wealth, the opulence, the comfort were contrary to the everyday experience of the majority of the population, yet these were people who took an active part in Irish life within their own milieu. Today's image of a room crowded with fine furniture and featuring the portrait of a beautiful young woman can wing us back to that era that is now, sadly, gone! Children on the rocks?
Description: Connemara might seem an unlikely place to find marble but the green stone found there continues to fascinate. Mr. Hargrave has captured four children among the rocks of a quarry and unless my eyes deceive me they appear to be boys in dresses? Funny looking yokes
Description: When Morning Mary was growing up in West Cork the sight of one of these Bus/Trains would have been described as "funny looking yokes entirely"! It is quite a while since we posted an O'Dea shot, and these interesting pieces of rolling stock from the Great Northern Railway. What were they doing in Inchicore and is there any example available today? A woman clothed in the sun!
Description: As 1954 was designated a "Marian Year" by Pope Pius XII there was a rush to erect shrines/grottoes/statues in each parish in Ireland. This one, probably somewhere in Donegal from the lens of Mr. Tynan is probably one of many in the county. It does not appear to be moving as some at the other end of the country were alleged to have done ;-) The general consensus is that this may not be a statue, but a real female woman (a scarcity at that time in Donegal :) ) partaking in a temporary tableau vivant to mark the opening of an actual Marian grotto and statue nearby. According to our intrepid Flickroonies, this Tynan image was captured relatively close to the centre of Glenties in Donegal…. Description: It is quite a while since we had the pleasure of posting a Fergus O'Connor image and so, despite the light leak, we have a lovely shot of an estuary/tidal area somewhere in Ireland. I love the way the children are carefully gathered together and sitting quietly for the photographer! With thanks to BeachcomberAustralia, this didn't stay as "unknown location" for long. Description: Mr. Kelly and staff provide a display of motor cars outside the premises on Catherine Street, Waterford. Can we take it that Mr. Kelly is the distinguished gentleman in the centre with bowler hat and top coat? The man second from the right looks like the doppelganger of Simon Harris, Irish Minister for Health! I wonder if the dealership is still around? With thanks to input from several Flickroonies today (including Niall McAuley, sharon.corbet, B-59, BeachcomberAustralia and others) we were reminded that we've visited Kelly's dealership before, that it is the "purpose-built motor garage in Ireland", is still a motor dealers, though the Kelly's themselves (still in the trade) operate from a premesis outside the city proper.... First Envoy to the Irish Republic in London : Art Ó Bríain 1919-1924, with members of the staff.
Description: We have had the pleasure of meeting Art Ó'Brían before but in top hat and tails! Here he is in less formal attire with the staff who supported him in his role. It would be really interesting to find out who those people were and perhaps what became of them? With thanks to our contributors, and in particular our own Carol Maddock, it seems that this image is described in that recent tome the 'Atlas of the Irish Revolution'. It describes this as an image of Art Ó Briain's embassy staff, specifically:  "(front, L to R): Liam Moore, Fintan Murphy, Ó Briain, C.B. Dutton; (back, L to R): Seán Molloy, Maeve O'Brien, Paddy Codyre. In March 1919 Ó Briain was officially appointed Dáil Éireann envoy to Great Britain. His bureau located off the Strand (City of Westminster) employed a small 'embassy' staff [..] Significant international relations were developed. Between 1919 and 1920 Ó Briain met with and advised Saad Zaghloul, the Egyptian revolutionary and statesman, in the latter's negotiations with the British government. He also became a close associate of the Indian nationalist and communist Shapurji Saklatvala. History in the making
Description: History in the making as a twin engined string bag named Goliath took to the air almost exactly 100 years ago. As the caption in the catalogue says "The Farmouth 'Goliath' airborne"! What we take for granted today was weird and wonderful then, and after the first World War the developments in aviation were phenomenal! What was the story behind Mr. Mason's card of this particular feat? Based on today's inputs, it seems there is an error in this catalogue entry, and that this is the Farman (not Farmouth) Goliath. Seemingly several large WWI bombers of the Avions Farman company were repurposed for passenger travel post the Great War. Given that this image (with exactly this framing) appears in a souvenir brochure of the company, it's possible that Mr. Mason was just taken by the image - or was taken (somewhere) by the aircraft itself.... Selfie?
Description: A strange one today from the Mason Collection. It is obviously a type of "selfie" of our Mr Mason. I wonder what the headline "Zoo's" New Arrival refers to? Our catalogue date is ca. 1890-1910 which is obviously wrong! As with our other recent Mason photo (in which the text didn't match the photo), it seems that we may have the same thing here. Perhaps Mr. Mason just liked the "joke" of his image being associated with another headline :) While the headline above deals with an unrelated (though interesting) story from July 1933, the caption below (and Carol Maddock) confirm that this image was taken during a lecture on "Archaeology in Ireland", at a meeting of the Dublin Rotary Club, in the Metropole Restaurant (O'Connell Street) on 3 July 1933. Apparently he covered the growth in finds of bronze age artefacts with the draining of bogs and cutting of turf which was becoming more industrialised at the time (the Turf Development Board, precursor to Bord na Móna, was formed in the same year)... The Last Post on the Lonely Beach
Description: One of the things we who live on mainlands never really appreciate is the peace, the quiet, and the tranquility of island life! Aranmore from the Mason Collection with houses scattered like currants in a virtual curreny bun looks just perfect to Morning Mary this fine, cold, and wintery morning! Rory_Sherlock was quick to pinpoint this to Leabgarrow and its pier on Aran's eastern side. Not surprising for those times, that there's not a female woman to be seen! Description: Two main questions today on this photograph from our Clonbrock collection – Who is Louie? And where is Hodder? Bonus points for suggestions as to why these little chaps were so delighted with themselves... Quickest off the mark (and undoubtedly on the ball) was sharon.corbet, who suggests that this is Louis Meldon on the occasion of his commencement at Hodder Place, a Catholic (Jesuit) boarding school in England. We've met the Meldon's before - as presumed relatives of the Dillon's of Clonbrock, there are more than a few of their family shots in that collection. And, indeed, Louis himself has cropped up more than once.... The ashes of despair
Description: From the Hallowed Halls of Library Towers to the ultimate in human desolation for todays photograph. A wee cottage in Glenbeigh has been reduced to its constituent parts, the walls a mere pile of stones. The future for such a family must have been bleak in the extreme. What can we learn about this horrific scene? (By the way Beachcomber no more puns are kneeded, I got the message :) ) Photographer: Thomas H.
