James was born in 1893 in Wandsworth. He was a plumber and decorator before the war. According to the medal roll he was "formerly in the army cyclist corp". The medal card does also give his date of death as 8/8/1915 not 1916 but i think this is an error as i have found a few references to his date of death and they all say it is 1916.

James was born 16th April 1893 in Battersea, St Mary, Wandsworth, (London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906). His father was Ernest and his mother was Maria. In 1901 they were living at 78 Abercrombie Street, Battersea ( house still exists) with his paternal grandparents James and Margaret Beaney. By 1911 the family were living at 13 Ruvigny Gardens (still exists) and James was 18. He had a brother Richard who was 7, and two sisters, Ivy 14 and Constance 9. 'Soldiers died' have him as G/15463 Queens Own Royal West Surrey Regiment, formerly 2857 East Surrey Regt (but medal index has him as 2857 Army Cyclist Corps). He enlisted at Kingston-on Thames, Surrey. He went to France 31st May 1915.
