I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint those dog seekers among us whose hopes have been raised by the title but I cannot see a dog in this image. Unusually not as crisp and clear as so many Stereo Pairs images we have seen nonetheless this is a very interesting and quite charming shot. The title provided by the cataloguer (they must be constantly on the sauce) is Railway close to shore, Co. Cork and I had great difficulty finding the railway but how they settled on Co. Cork remains to be seen?

Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton

Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence

Collection: Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection

Date: between ca. 1860-1883 Most likely between 1870 and 1880

NLI Ref: STP_0988

The title of STP-0984 gives it away. It's just outside Cobh. Streetview.

The current pedestrian bridge across the railway dates from 1880, so we are before that date.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet Is it a different bridge or has it just had the arch filled in?

I think you're right and it's different. I don't see any evidence of an arch on this side goo.gl/maps/4XTa5xc4qcBRvaiY9, and it's made of brick, whereas your second picture seems to show big blocks.

At the NIAH, all of the big houses on this slope are labelled 1860-1880, 1865-1875, or just 1870, some are here, some are not.

There are several differences between our bridge and the current one The supporting pier is arch shaped, possibly of stone Our bridge is single span, current one is two span with cast iron support in centre Iron work on bridge itself is of a different design. Later bridge has brick pier supporting stairs https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/51523454504/in/dateposted/ However, a bit remiss of the NIAH in not mentioning that it was a replacement for an earlier structure, if that was the case.

Nearby STP_0995 is Cobh, and shows the RC church on the hill which was demolished to make way for the Cathedral, which was started in 1868. Likewise 996.

A likely explanation for replacing the footbridge was that the single line to Queenstown was doubled in 1882 following the takeover by the GS&WR. They developed the deep water port for transatlantic liners and operated the 'American Mail' which delivered the mail to London a day quicker than the liner could.
