To end the week we have another photo from the Poole Collection and yet again on Barronstrand Street in Waterford. The shop and house of Joseph Knox complete with a great array of the goods available therein and outside! Since Cleary's had moved on was Mr. or Mrs. Knox considering a move also?

Mr. Knox lived to be 92 in 1963, still living at #3 Barronstrand Street, still a shopkeeper. Says he was married, but I don't see a record.

Joseph Knox was in business up until about 2006 when the owners retired. For many years it had been the place for tourists to buy Waterford Crystal and high end China, you definitely didn’t want to knock anything over when you were in there.

General question - what was the purpose of the long mirrors above the shop windows and below the name (see note "who dis den?")? Also in the Bijou photo from a couple of days ago. Strikes me that they would block light entering inside the shop. Thinking about that Titanic poster; White Star were advertising the ship at least ten months before the ill-fated maiden voyage (April 1912).

In China mirrors would be used to reflect back external evil influences. However, this is Waterford, so I think not. If they were angled downwards they could attract a passerby to stop and check their hat or hairdo, perhaps also to look at the goods on show. However, these mirrors appear vertical and appear to serve no obvious purpose.
