The Rockwell College Senior Rugby team of 1935/36 look like they were fed plenty of good Tipperary beef for the whole season - and several more before that! A fine body of young men with Munster caps to go with their trophy. Can we find out about them and how did they fare afterwards?

Dear Mr Poole, Why do you use carpets and rugs outdoors, and fake grass mats inside your studio ? Sincerely, The Beachcomber (Please see also my letter of 27/1/2022)

Names of two who might be present in the photo: Maurice Kissane, Cornelius Holly. Someone who isn't in the photo: Frank Mitchell. Sudden death KLAXXXON Mitchell, aged 16, was killed in a practice rugby match at Rockwell College on 24th March 1935 (a Sunday). The ball had been kicked forward, Mitchell fielded it, and Kissane "in an attempt to prevent him kicking to touch struck against Mitchell". He tried to carry on, but had to give up and was taken to hospital where he died "due to internal hemorrhage of the abdominal viscera". Holly played in the game and gave evidence at the inquest. (from the report of the inquest in the Belfast Telegraph - Wednesday 27 March 1935)

Wikipedia says Rockwell won the Munster Schools Senior Cup in 1930 and again in 1937, beating Presentation Cork on both occasions.

May is late in the year, must be around the time of the Final?

The two one either side of the one holding the ball appear to be wearing odd socks. But they have the same oddness (left hooped, right plain). If you had a Munster cap, was it the tradition to wear one Munster sock? Presumably so that opponents knew what they were up against and were suitably intimidated during the match, when everyone would have been bareheaded? But the one with ball (the captain?) has a cap but matching hooped socks. Or am I trying to read too much into sloppy dressing?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/johnspooner A lot of them have a tan line across the forehead, which suggests they were playing with some sort of hat on. Scrum caps date back to the 19th century, so I'd expect the locks would at least be wearing them.
