A recording session is clearly underway ... the recording horns can be seen in the center at the back of the room in front of the banjo player.

I assume this is the orchestra formed to record for the Columbia record label. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_Symphony_Orchestra A history of the Columbia label is at: adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/resources/detail/113 www.appalachianhistory.net/2016/04/samantha-bumgarner-rec... states that the first commercial banjo record was recorded in April 1924, featuring Samantha Bumgarner. The banjo player in this photo is a man. So that might be a help in dating this session.

Thanks https://www.flickr.com/photos/ceebee23 for pointing out the horns. I'll ask that we add a note to say it shows a recording session.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/23103743@N05] There were a bunch of different Columbia Records orchestras. This doesn't look to me like the symphony version. Others at: adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/basic/index?term=columbia+...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/23103743@N05 N.B.: that source only says that the first Appalachian style banjo recording was 1924, not all banjo recordings.

This is clearly an acoustic recording session. These likely ended at Columbia when electrical recording began on a regular basis in March, 1925. adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/resources/detail/114
