Yet another photo from the collection of the late Uachtarain na hEireann, Sean T. O'Ceallaigh (President of Ireland). A dinner in honour of then Archbishop Mannix who was a very well known and liked Irish born cleric with Mr. O'Kelly on the right behind the man with the moustache!
Mannix paid a controversial visit to Ireland in 1925, and never visited again. O'Kelly was in America at the time.
I wonder if this dinner was in America, when Mannix was on his way to Rome and then Ireland?

Mannix was also at the Eucharistic Congress in Chicago in 1926.

I must delete a bunch of stuff: I confused John J. O'Kelly (sinn fein envoy to US and briefly Australia) with Sean T. O'Kelly (also envoy in the US, but not until Oct 1924).

mentions: Photograph - Group at dinner given in honour of Archbishop Daniel Mannix, Melbourne, Grand Hotel , Paris, October, 1920; names on back.
Given that we have two tricolours in the picture, might this be a photo of that dinner in Paris?

The same photograph was in the Freemans Journal on Saturday April 23rd 1921, with this hard to read caption.
When passing through Paris on his way back from Rome to London. Archbishop Mannix was the guest of Mr. and Mrs Sean T. O Ceallaigh at a banquet given in his honour in the Grand Hotel on April 14. Amongst those present were: (Left to right) John V. Meagher (Australia), M. J. Boglaye?, Thomas Hughes Kelly (New York), Most Rev Dr. Mannix, Mrs Sean T. O Ceallaigh, Mons, Marc Sangnier (Right foreground), Mons Y. N. Goblet.
There was an australian John Meagher, businessman, politician, a devout Catholic, originally Irish, but he died in 1920. I wonder if this John V. Meagher was one of his 5 sons living at the time of his death.
This geneology page suggests not, son John is John Patrick.
Wait! the Indo says John P! That is almost certainly the man.

Trove is full of Mannix stuff, but I have had no luck finding a dinner with the Irish President in the 1930s or 1940s. Yet. Daniel Patrick Mannix (4 March 1864 – 6 November 1963) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Mannix adb.anu.edu.au/biography/mannix-daniel-7478

Here is a letter from Sean T O'Kelly - then based in Paris - dated 28th April 1921 describing Mannix's dinner in Paris. He seems to have stopped in Paris going to and returning from Rome. repository.library.georgetown.edu/handle/10822/1067201 This places that dinner on the 14 April 1921 www.rte.ie/centuryireland/index.php/articles/archbishop-m...
