The old building pictured here in this illustration is of the Old Theatre, Wood Lane, which had many uses in its time.
There is little to remind us of the night ‘life’ that took place a couple of centuries ago. However, Wood Lane is mentioned in the list of Streets of Beverley during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
Situated in the centre of Wood Lane, it was used for various purposes, its first use was as a cockpit, then afterwards as a Theatre, then finally a Methodist Chapel.
On one occasion the famous John Wesley preached from here. It was then used as a Worsted Manufactory and afterwards employed for the Militia.
