Sloop on Sydney Harbour
Description: This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s William Hall collection. The Hall collection combines photographs from both William J Hall and his father William Frederick Hall. The images provide an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes studio portraits and images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races. The Australian National Maritime Museum undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. If you can identify a person, vessel or landmark, write the details in the Comments box below. Thank you for helping caption this important historical image. Object number 00010724

Song of the lonely boatman
Description: This lovely scene vies with yesterdays visit to Claudy in County Derry for sheer beauty! The wee boat on the rocks looks lonesome while its colleague appears to be under full sail in the background. Given the stillness of the water it seems unlikely that it will be getting much wind to fill that sail? By the way is that what they would call a "lateen"??? Description: I know that we have had two Wynne images already this week but you cannot have too much of a good thing. There is a freshness and sense of place to these images that just makes me feel at home with them. Today's shot shows a grand house with a round tower and ruins of a monastery in the background. Ida, sweet as apple cider
Description: We're taking a swift detour from Clonmel to Waterford (I think) today. This is the Ida. Wildly out of focus for a Poole glass plate, but that's surely to be forgiven as the boat is in motion. What was the Ida? Why all the flags? And where was it off to, loaded with enough people on board to give Elfin Safety a heart attack? Also, 1901-1954? We can surely do better than this? Flickroonies laugh at such a wide date range... derangedlemur points us to this fantastic article by Andrew Doherty of tidesandtalesDOTie which suggests that this image dates to c.1898. Likely it was before c.1905 when the paddle steamer Ida left the service of the Waterford Steamship Company. Before being apparently broken up in 1908.... Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford Date: Catalogue range c.1901-1954. Likely before c.1905 (last sailing). The wheel on the mill goes round and round...
Description: A rustic old mill with the wheel turning so fast that it is but a blur to end this weeks posting. Such a scene was always a great favourite of painters and photographers but sadly they are scarce as hens teeth these days! Somehow (we have found that it's best not to ask :) ) [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] identified this as Anamoe Mill, near Glebe in County Wicklow.... What a spectacle? A spectacle bridge.
Description: This magnificent shot of a magnificent bridge in Lisdoonvarna, County Clare was taken by Mr. French for the Lawrence Collection. The unusual structure fills that great height to perfection, and must have delighted the engineer who designed and constructed it? The engineer (according to our contributors, the NIAH and Archiseek) was John Hill, who built the structure in 1850... The posers and the dog.
Description: While yesterdays boys fishing was a natural photograph, today's beautiful stereo pairs image is carefully posed with even the dog sitting obediently for the photographer. The number of well heeled tourists and visitors might indicate that the building in the background was an hotel? What can we find out about the place, the people and the location? [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet] was first to identify this as the Woodenbridge Hotel in County Wicklow. Also/fomerly known as Wooden Bridge Inn or Putland Arms Hotel, the fashions on show would seem to suggest that this was captured towards the middle/end of the 1860-1880s range... Boys will be boys.
Description: An unusual human interest image today from the Mason Collection. Boys being boys, down the docks, playing with the water and never a care for the danger. High and dry on a rocky shore.
Description: A Mason image to begin this weeks postings. Specifically, a maritime scene, with what seems a familiar headland in the background(?) The many boats and fishing vessels grounded during low tide gives the men a chance to carry out checks and repairs. The breakwater seems more natural stone than a man made construction. Are we looking at a natural harbour? Niall McAuley was quickest on the draw here, identifying this as Port Erin and Bradda Head on the Isle of Man.... Photographer: Thomas H. Description: I was mistaken during the week when I described the beautiful castle as being a ruin but there is little doubt about this one! A beautiful window in a ruined monastery with an altar/baptismal font in the foreground. Where is it and what does it look like today? The ruins of the manor slowly decay...

Only the donkey knows how to pose!
Description: A posed photograph from the Lawrence Collection. Intended for postcards no doubt. A country man and woman with donkey and cart getting ready to go to market. The buildings in the background should make it easy to identify the place - if not the time. And indeed [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] quickly identified this as Courthouse Square (and the courthouse) in Galway. Welcome back to all who are not on holidays and we here at Library Towers hope you all had a happy Easter! derangedlemur confirmed that this should fall into our "no longer standing" album. Description: A few years ago we had a photo from the Mason Collection of the Brownshill Dolmen in Co Carlow. I hope this photo will prove more of a challenge, I am thinking that it will be difficult to fix on the correct location. That said, I have been wrong in the past! He handed me a wet fish!
Description: This interesting shot from the Keogh Collection shows a group of men gathered around a car at an election rally. The man on the ground has a fine set of "mutton chop" sideburns. The candidate has a hat that has been crushed many a time and has taken on a shape all its own. Who, where and when? Rory_Sherlock was first to suggest (and we have many strong reasons to accept it) that this image was taken at the courthouse in Ennis, County Clare. Perhaps around the same time (1917) as a similar Keogh Brother's image of De Valera on the steps of the court house - as part of his successful by-election bid that summer. We don't have the who/where/when trifecta however - as we're none-the-wiser as to who the central figures are here.... The Wheatly Tomb, St. Patricks Cathedral, Dublin
Description: To one of my favourite places in Dublin now, and one of those magnificent monuments to commemorate the great and the good. How great and good the deceased was remains to be discovered - but the monument is impressive! As per today's inputs (and Richard Whately's Wikipedia entry), while his works were impressive, it seems the personality of the man himself was something of an acquired taste. Birdsville Hotel during flooding in 2010
Description: Creator: Karren Pickering. Location: Birdsville, Queensland. Description: In 2010 thousands of people who gathered in Birdsville for the annual races were stranded as unexpected heavy rain turned the roads to mud and forced the cancellation of the Birdsville Races for only the third time in their history. 28194 Karren Pickering 2011 Brisbane Flood Photographs 2010-2011. Dubbed as the Melbourne Cup of the Outback, crowds of 6,000 racegoers converge on Birdsville each year to enjoy two day of quality outback racing and entertainment. The second race meet in the Simpson Desert Racing Carnival, the 13 race program features horses from all over Australia competing for the coveted Birdsville Cup. Other entertainment includes the Fashions on the Field, Fred Brophy’s Boxing Troupe, entertainment at the Birdsville Hotel, Fun Run, Cocktail Party, a variety of food vendors, a giant auction and much more. Loo Bridge, Co. Kerry (and no toilet humour please?)
Description: Yet another wonderful Royal plate from Mr. French today with a valley scene from Glenflesk, Co. Kerry. Loo Bridge in Glenflesk looks to have been the centre of activity in the area at that time but I for one never heard of it! What was the bridge used for and does it still stand? And the answer is that, while no longer in use (as a rail line, station and bridge at least), much of the structures we see here still remain. Another shot mercifully left out of our "no longer standing" album :) Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1880-1900. The castle at the Salmon Leap!
Description: This lovely Royal plate image from Mr. French of Leixlip Castle with the Liffey in the foreground to start the week with a bang. The Liffey along that stretch and down along through Lucan and the Strawberry Beds is just beautiful with all the big houses and the fine land to green the view! Based on some fine shots of the same view from [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] it would seem that it is the trees that "green the view" today. And at least partially obscure the castle. The boat house is still visible and extant however.... Down the old bog road
Description: Yesterday we had a couple bringing home the turf and today we have people living on the bog with a straight road leading off to the distant hills. The cataloguer seems to have been under the impression that the people were leaning on a rick of turf but it looks more like their home to me! Do you agree and where is it? Whether temporary or otherwise, the general consensus is that this is a picture dwelling. And O Mac has expertly pinpointed it to the road between Letterfrack and Kylemore Abbey in Connemara.... Bringing home the turf
Description: What appears picturesque today was a reality not that long ago for many people in remote areas of Ireland. Neddy the donkey was the chief source of power for transport. The creels on the back of the donkey would indicate terrain that was too rough for a cart or that the family were to poor to afford the cart. Times change? Thanks to BeachcomberAustralia for the (generally favoured) suggestion that we are in County Antrim, not too far from a relatively recent image of what appears to be some of the same people.... Ladies in crinolines with parasol in stereo - twice as nice!
Description: This crisp, clear and beautiful image from the Stereo Pairs Collection shows a very attractive building with two ladies in crinolines standing outside. The building itself is quite distinctive which should make it easy to identify? Unfortunately I don't see any dogs :-( The general consensus is that this is St. Anne’s Hydro and Turkish Bath in Blarney, County Cork. Which, according to Archiseek at least, dates to 1870, and narrows our range a bit. The building, including the clock we see here, is just about still standing.... Description: This Cable Station in County Kerry is bathed in sunshine and looking spruce! In the days when telegrams were the principal long range method of communication working in this building would have been the centre of activitiy. Waterville in good weather would be just heavenly.... .... Except this probably isn't Waterville. According to today's contributors, while this is County Kerry, someone has mistaken the cable station in Waterville for the one on Valentia. Description: The title on today's image from the Clonbrock Collection could be a really difficult clue from a cryptic crossword! "Wellington from F's room. Fishing" could easily be 12 down or perhaps 3 across? It is a photograph this time whereas most Clonbrock images up to now have been glass plates so after 70 million views we can begin with something different! There general consensus is that "Wellington" is Wellington College in Berkshire, and that the "F" who has a room here is perhaps Francis Marcus Crofton - grandson of Edith Dillon..... Thank you all for the fantastic support that enabled the NLI images to garner such an incredible level of viewing as well as the wonderful research and identification that has gone on. When spacemen walked the earth!
Description: This Morning Mary loves when visitors to Ireland who have not been here before come calling so that they can be taken to see the wonders of Newgrange! The workmanship on the enormous stones would be impressive in today's context but given that they were carried out more than 5,000 years ago they are phenomenal! Mansion, Gorey, Co. Wexford
Description: The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this photo was what makes a house a mansion? Wikipedia provides the following definition: "A mansion is a large dwelling house. The word itself derives through Old French from the Latin word mansio "dwelling", an abstract noun derived from the verb manere "to dwell". The English word manse originally defined a property large enough for the parish priest to maintain himself, but a mansion is no longer self-sustaining in this way (compare a Roman or medieval villa)". What can you tell us about this particular mansion? The general consensus (prompted initially by [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet]) is that this is a view of Courtown House near Gorey, County Wexford. Demolished in the mid-20th century, this ex-mansion is now another entry in our "no longer standing" album..... Third Lock, River Lagan, Belfast, Co. Antrim
Description: From Apostles of Temperance in Cork to locks on the Lagan near Belfast for todays image. The Eason collection has some interesting and educational images, and for me this was an eye-opener - as I never knew that the Lagan was managed and made navigable above the tide mark! When did all this take place and is it still in use? With thanks to [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]], [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet], [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] and the Wikipedia article on the 'Lagan Navigation', I am further educated on this section of waterway. Seemingly it opened in the mid-18th century, and was viable until the mid-20th century. Closed in the 1950s, it seems that at least part of the lock system (and these lock keepers cottages) have been restored and given new life since. I wonder what the man pictured would have made of it all.... Thatched cottages and flats on the bicycle - oh bliss!
Description: To end the week where we have had doubles, rebels and Gandelows we now have a truly charming Eason shot. A man mends a bicycle outside the door of a thatched cottage with a young girl in a pinny standing behind him watching the photographer at work. In the background is a town or city marked by a high spire dominating the landscape. There is no doubt but this scene has changed drastically in the meantime, if we can locate it(?) Rory Sherlock was quick with the location and subject: Old Town in Letterkenny, County Donegal. The spire in the background is that of the Cathedral of St. Eunan and St. Columba, which opened in 1901.... Rabbinical School Vacquelire Street Paris
Description: Rabbinical School, Vauquelire Street – Paris. The Séminaire Israélite de France (also referred to as the École Rabbinique) has been training rabbis since 1829. Though founded in Metz, the school was transferred to Paris by imperial decree in 1859, and relocated to the the Latin Quarter at 9 Rue Vauquelire in 1881. The educational focus of the institution aims to imbue students with a knowledge of general culture and philosophy in addition to Torah. When the Nazis seized Paris the operations of the school were temporarily transferred to Lyon where they were able to continue for a brief period before the functioning of the school was driven underground. After the end of the Second World War the institution reconstituted itself and continues to function – still at 9 Rue Vauquelire – to this day. The Séminaire is known for having one of the largest and most important Judaic libraries in Paris – and all of France – the presence of the institute’s book stamp amongst the books in the Offenbach depot is a reminder of a time when the library was almost destroyed. This book stamp is from a book looted by the Nazis and sorted by Colonel Seymour Pomrenze, one of “the Monuments Men,” at the Offenbach Archival Depot. There are two scrapbooks of archival markings from the books sorted at the Offenbach Depot in the Seymour Pomrenze Collection held by the American Jewish Historical Society (Call number P-933) There is a finding aid for the collection here The digitized scrapbooks are available here and here. For more information on this project check the Center’s blog: 16thstreet.tumblr.com/tagged/Offenbach-Depot Dr. Mitch Fraas, Acting Director of the Digital Humanities Forum at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries' Special Collections Center is working on a similar project for the German book stamps based on NARA microfilm of the volumes the American Jewish Historical Society currently holds.
