Union of Food Workers Lozovsky Club
Description: The Lozovsky referred to in this stamp is most likely Solomon Lozovsky, a prominent Bolshevik and, during the times he was expelled from the Bolshevik Party (in 1914 and 1918), a Mezhraionets (a Russian Social Democratic Party faction straddling the ideological territory between the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks). He was a long-time revolutionary and a high official in various capacities in the Soviet Union. His Soviet political credentials were serious – at various times Presidium member of the All-Union Central Council of Soviet Trade Unions, Supreme Soviet member, Deputy People's Commissar for foreign affairs (answering to Molotov), and head of the Soviet Information Bureau (Sovinformburo). He was also the chair of the department of International Relations at the Higher Party School and General Secretary of the Red International Labour Union (Profintern). A Union club being named in Solomon Lozovsky’s honor is in line with his extensive involvement with labor unions throughout much of his career. This stamp is a testament to the existence of libraries in Union social institutions in the Soviet Union. He was born in Ukraine to Jewish parents and was a member of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee. He was murdered together with thirteen other members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee in 1952 during Stalin’s anti-Semitic campaigns of the late 1940s and early 1950s. This event came to be known as the Night of the Murdered Poets, as five of the thirteen victims were Yiddish writers. This book stamp is from a book looted by the Nazis and sorted by Colonel Seymour Pomrenze, one of “the Monuments Men,” at the Offenbach Archival Depot. There are two scrapbooks of archival markings from the books sorted at the Offenbach Depot in the Seymour Pomrenze Collection held by the American Jewish Historical Society (Call number P-933) There is a finding aid for the collection here The digitized scrapbooks are available here and here. Here he describes a request for a Christmas meal for the inmates of Mansfield Workhouse. (MH 12/9363/397) “A subscription has been entered into in Mansfield to afford a treat of roast beef and plum pudding to the inmates of the workhouse on Christmas Day next [instead of the usual diet of the day]” “Great inconvenience would arise from the treat being given on the Christmas day and I was instructed to request that you would be pleased to sanction it being given on a subsequent day, either Dec 31st or January 1st.”

Trim Castle, Trim, Co. Meath.

Newbridge railway station
Description: Our Mr O'Dea may have recorded the decline and fall of the railway system in Ireland, but Mr. French recorded some of its earlier days. This fine image of Newbridge station in County Kildare shows French at his best. Men working on the line while a supervisor looks down from the platform. A fairly tranquil scene otherwise as people wait, but what is the man on the bottom right near the luggage doing? For the umpteenth time, wall posters helped us establish a fairly sound date for this photo. Thanks to sharon.corbet, BultacoFan, and suckindeesel for narrowing a 20 year time span down to May 1910, specifically after 20th May. And thank you too, BeachcomberAustralia, for reminding us about how the usage and root of words and language can vary greatly between this Northern and your Southern Hemisphere. Gwynfryn, open windows, elegant lady and.... a DOG!
Description: On a day when the rain is coming down like stair rods in Dublin the Clonbrock Collection brightens it up with a lovely summer shot from Wales in the early 1900s. A young lady standing outside a terrace of houses on the village green where many of the upstairs windows are wide open to catch any breeze, and ladies are out in skirts, blouses and hats. The most attractive part of the scene, for some at least, is the fact that there is a dog on display! UPDATE: Sounding the Location Identified Klaxon, thanks to our own John Spooner ! This is not Wales, but the very picturesque Broadway in the Cotswolds, Worcestershire, England. Glad to see that the dog in the distance was appreciated. Ida, sweet as apple cider
Description: We're taking a swift detour from Clonmel to Waterford (I think) today. This is the Ida. Wildly out of focus for a Poole glass plate, but that's surely to be forgiven as the boat is in motion. What was the Ida? Why all the flags? And where was it off to, loaded with enough people on board to give Elfin Safety a heart attack? Also, 1901-1954? We can surely do better than this? Flickroonies laugh at such a wide date range... derangedlemur points us to this fantastic article by Andrew Doherty of tidesandtalesDOTie which suggests that this image dates to c.1898. Likely it was before c.1905 when the paddle steamer Ida left the service of the Waterford Steamship Company. Before being apparently broken up in 1908.... Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford Date: Catalogue range c.1901-1954. Likely before c.1905 (last sailing). Perhaps c.1898 (as suggested here) NLI Ref: POOLEWP 0957 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Description: This Mary had a massive case of déjà vu about this O'Connor photo, but no matter what/where/how I searched, I couldn't find any evidence that we've posted this one before. So here it is, fingers crossed – unknown man, unknown location... Perhaps unsurprisingly [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] was first to identify this as Youghal in County Cork. The wheel on the mill goes round and round...
Description: A rustic old mill with the wheel turning so fast that it is but a blur to end this weeks posting. Such a scene was always a great favourite of painters and photographers but sadly they are scarce as hens teeth these days! Somehow (we have found that it's best not to ask :) ) [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] identified this as Anamoe Mill, near Glebe in County Wicklow.... What a spectacle? A spectacle bridge.
Description: This magnificent shot of a magnificent bridge in Lisdoonvarna, County Clare was taken by Mr. French for the Lawrence Collection. The unusual structure fills that great height to perfection, and must have delighted the engineer who designed and constructed it? The engineer (according to our contributors, the NIAH and Archiseek) was John Hill, who built the structure in 1850... The posers and the dog.
Description: While yesterdays boys fishing was a natural photograph, today's beautiful stereo pairs image is carefully posed with even the dog sitting obediently for the photographer. The number of well heeled tourists and visitors might indicate that the building in the background was an hotel? What can we find out about the place, the people and the location? [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet] was first to identify this as the Woodenbridge Hotel in County Wicklow. Also/fomerly known as Wooden Bridge Inn or Putland Arms Hotel, the fashions on show would seem to suggest that this was captured towards the middle/end of the 1860-1880s range... Boys will be boys.
Description: An unusual human interest image today from the Mason Collection. Boys being boys, down the docks, playing with the water and never a care for the danger. High and dry on a rocky shore.
Description: A Mason image to begin this weeks postings. Specifically, a maritime scene, with what seems a familiar headland in the background(?) The many boats and fishing vessels grounded during low tide gives the men a chance to carry out checks and repairs. The breakwater seems more natural stone than a man made construction. Are we looking at a natural harbour? Niall McAuley was quickest on the draw here, identifying this as Port Erin and Bradda Head on the Isle of Man.... Photographer: Thomas H. Window with possible baptismal font to fore.
Description: I was mistaken during the week when I described the beautiful castle as being a ruin but there is little doubt about this one! A beautiful window in a ruined monastery with an altar/baptismal font in the foreground. Where is it and what does it look like today? The ruins of the manor slowly decay...

Only the donkey knows how to pose!
Description: A posed photograph from the Lawrence Collection. Intended for postcards no doubt. A country man and woman with donkey and cart getting ready to go to market. The buildings in the background should make it easy to identify the place - if not the time. And indeed [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] quickly identified this as Courthouse Square (and the courthouse) in Galway. I hope this photo will prove more of a challenge, I am thinking that it will be difficult to fix on the correct location. That said, I have been wrong in the past! A 'casualty' being loaded onto the Humber ferry 28 May 1961 (archive ref CD-103) (22)
Description: (Buy exclusive historic East Yorkshire prints from East Riding Photos http://picturearchivesorg/eastridingphotos) This image was taken during 'Exercise Exodus', a simulated evacuation exercise carried out by Hull Civil Defence Authority on 28th May 1961, when the Cold War was at its height. It was designed as practice for how to evacuate the city of Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, in the event of a catastrophic incident and involved volunteers, as well as civil defence and emergency personnel, being 'evacuated' via a bus convoy and across the River Humber on the old ferries.
