Glass plate negative image of Australian landscape, possibly along the Hawkesbury River NSW, 1880-1909
Description: The Hall collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races. This image belongs to a series of photographs probably taken on the Hawkesbury River by William Frederick Hall between 1880 and 1909. The ANMM undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. This record has been updated accordingly. Object no. 00002366

Oh no! Not Sligo again...
Description: We know that we have been to Sligo so many times recently but to be honest it is such a beautiful county that it deserves lots of visits. Nobody to kill time in Ballywillan
Description: A visit to the wonderful Mr. O'Dea's collection today and a deserted railway station at Ballywillan, County Longford. The track nearest the stations premises is in good nick whereas on the other side the sleepers are up, the rails are aside and it looks like it is curtains at least for the second line. I wonder was Ballywillan on the Dublin to Sligo line and if so is it still on the go? Apology: I have egg on my face after yesterday completely misreading the title on the Hogan image from Cork:-( GOOD NEWS KLAXON: Keep an eye out for this programme featuring our very own Elinor Wiltshire and some of her photographs that we have featured here. What's going on here now?
Description: A peeler without a cap badge, the Guild Hall with works going on outside and men standing about gossiping like auld wans - what's going on here now? Derry's Guild Hall, that iconic building that has featured so much in recent years as seen from the quays. That peeler has a fine, well groomed beard which probably tells us that he is a senior man who knows all there is to be known about what is actually going on? Dev in shades
Description: No soft Homburg, and definitely no top hat for Mr De Valera today. Instead he has donned a fetching pair of dark sunglasses. Now we don't know where or whose funeral this was, or if indeed, it was a funeral. Might it have been a commemorative event? Also, we'd love confirmation that Margaret Pearse and Tomás Derrig (Ó Deirg) are in this photo too? What band was this? Their insignia looks quite distinctive. A watery bridge near Kingstown?

Unless that is that this an "Irish Bridge"? Back in 1995 I was fortunate enough to spend several weeks in Israel/Palestine territory and while driving through the desert near the Dead Sea we passed several signs stating "Irish Bridge" and when I enquired what that was the response was a place where you might cross if the water was not too deep during floods! A cross in the Glens
Description: Laide Ancient Cross in Cushendall in County Antrim looks pristine and newly minted. The carving is so well developed and clear that one suspects that it may not be quite as ancient as the title suggests? Cushendall and the Antrim coast are a joy to visit with lovely scenery, charming villages and friendly people, well worth a visit! Let Lemass lead on!
Description: An image from the lovely Elinor Wiltshire to start this week after the August bank holiday. Fitzwilliam Street Lower Houses on St. Stephen's Green in the process of destruction, while high up are posters for Fianna Fáil with an image of the leader and the slogan "Let Lemass Lead on"! With some of the family I recently visited the museum at 14 Henrietta Street, and one of the images that came up was one of Elinor's from Ballymun, with the young girls we have already seen and identified. It gave me a lift to see her work, and its association with a time in Dublin! Corrymore under the lee of the hill
Description: A significant collection of buildings on the island of Achill under the slopes of a bleak and rocky hill with the name "Corrymore". Probably a single homestead and that of some significant local personage, perhaps even a national one with notions given the flagpole beside the house? What makes this image especially significant is the presence of two dogs - WOW! A visit to Avoca is good for the soul
Description: A few years back I met some American friends and was showing them around. Top of the list of places they wanted to visit was Avoca thanks to some long forgotten (by me) TV series. After a few minutes there in the peace of the ancient village I could feel that peace and the attraction! The water is low but the river runs on forever! Birth, Death and legacy?

A quiet day in Killenaule?
Description: Mr. St .John of Crohane, Killenaule in Co. Tipperary commissioned Mr. Poole to produce this image way back in 1908. While I have passed through Killenaule many times I cannot remember such a gathering of horses and carriages but that may just have been a question of timing? On a more serious note I suspect that we will have to dig into the background of Mr. St. John in order to establish the location and other details of this image? Fógra beag: Tá madra ann! Thro' the magnifying glass
Description: Something a bit different from the Sean T. O'Ceallaigh Collection to start this week. A headstone in the name of Dillon which looks dark and dreary but thanks to the benefits of "Supermegazoomability" we can read things a bit better than the late Uachtaráin. The title says "If you look thro' a magnifying glass you can see plainly the inscription "Gondeunad [?] Dia trócaireona" but you can make your own mind up on that! Where is it and why would the Dillon family be of interest to the late President? Sounding the Location Identified Klaxon. This photograph brings us to Kansas in the USA. Lighthouse in a bog?
Description: Why the old Wanderers RFC Pavilion in what is now known as the Aviva Stadium should appear in the Commissioners of Irish Lights collection will probably remain a mystery but it is very opportune for the day that's in it! At 6.00 pm Irish time our Under 20's team will play in the final of the Rugby World Cup in South Africa against their Gallic and gallant opponents the French! The outside half is Sam Prendergast who plays for the Lansdowne Club and they are indeed a team of stars who have done Ireland proud regardless of the result today! The prize? A sticky bun with extra toffee!!!
Description: The Commissioners of Irish Lights have been very kind to us over the years with the identification of the locations of their photos. On this occasion they seem to have slipped up and present us with this rock strewn and cliff dominated stretch of coastline. Some of the Marys are giggling in the background convinced that our intrepid Flickroonies cannot identify it but Morning Mary knows that nothing is impossible for our team. Will you be able to prove her right and if so to collect the prize of a STICKY BUN WITH EXTRA TOFFEE (Virtual)? Photographer: Ball, Robert S. The Dutch boy and the Windmill
Description: Ten years ago I would have known very little about Dundalk but when members of the family moved there that all changed and now I am enchanted by the town, it's people and the hinterland. The "Dutch boy" is not Dutch but looks like the images of such boys from the last century. The windmill is a fine looking example of such astructure though it had already fallen into disuse and disrepair when Mr. French went calling. I have no idea of the mills location in the town but no doubt we can find it? For God's sake nobody smile?
Description: To end the week we have yet another visit to the Collection of photographs from the late President of Ireland, Seán T. O'Kelly. We have a group of very distinguished looking clerics, four ladies and some gentlemen wearing decorations of some sort. The one name we can be sure of is that of Count Plunkett at the right front of the group (left front as he is sitting). Can we name any of the others and what might have been the occasion. Perhaps they are not so much clerics as an early form of "Steampunk"? Sounding the People Identified and Date Established and Location Identifed Klaxons. Excellent detective work on this one. The Lady and the Lighthouse

Remembering days gone by...
Description: A Rugby souvenir from 1905 showing the four "Home" nations Rugby football teams of Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England. Gone were the hats, long trousers and huge handlebar moustaches of yesteryear and the strip were more identifiable with the current style. Over the past couple of days the Rugby family in Ireland and the community of St. MIchaels School have been rocked with the loss of Andrew O'Donnell and Max Wal in Greece while Munster coach and father of an Ireland Under 20 player Greig Oliver died in South Africa. Sport is a great unifier and a creator of memories and so today we remember the two young men and the dedicated coach, their families and their communities. Ar dheis Dé! Seán T the peacemaker?
Description: Uachtarain na hEireann Seán T. O'Kelly at the RDS as two foreign military officers shaking hands with his approval. Man of Steel
Description: On Friday we had Monkey Morgan flying over a bog and on Monday we are right down to sea level and up in the North West. The "Metal Man" in Rosses Point, County Sligo is a lot closer to the water than his mate down in County Waterford. It appears that the poor devil has need of a crutch as he has a frame resting against his right leg? Photographer: Ball, Robert S. Oh where the Shannon River flows...
Description: A lovely view of Foynes in County Limerick from the heights above with the whiff of war in the background in the form of a huge battle cruiser. I suspect that we have been nearby on the same date in the past but this view of the area is so much more sylvan and attractive? A haven of kindness and care
Description: Milford House in Castletroy, County Limerick has seen so many changes even since this photo was taken by the daring "Monkey" Morgan. In the mid 1950's all about it was green with the lordly Shannon in line of sight but today the area has changed. Today Milford House is a vital part of Ireland's Hospice service providing care for those in great pain and near the end of life. But what was it before and why was Mr. Morgan flying above?
