The First Jewish Workers Club in Yekaterinoslav
Description: As it was a busy industrial city, Dnipropetovsk also provided a rich urban setting for the development of a large and active Jewish community. Jewish workers were involved in numerous trades in the city, but Jewish life extended beyond the shop walls. Dnipropetovsk was home to several synagogues as well as a variety of political and social institutions. During the early 20th century the city was a site of much political action amongst Jews aligned with different ideologies such as the Jewish Labor Bund and various Zionist parties. These various political associations frequently had their own networks of clubs, libraries, publications and other support institutions. This book stamp belongs to one such Yidisher Arbeter Klub (Jewish Workers Club), a club associated with the thinker Ber Borokhov whose Labor Zionism fused elements of socialism and Zionism into a single platform. While the Jewish community of Dnipropetrovsk initially bloomed in the years immediately following the Russian Revolution – the forces of repression, collectivization, and famines in the early 1930s diminished the size of the Jewish community. The once thriving Jewish community of Dnipropetrovsk, and its surrounding agricultural regions, was destroyed in the invasion by Nazi forces. This stamp remains testament to the flourishing of Jewish political life that had once taken place in that city. This book stamp is from a book looted by the Nazis and sorted by Colonel Seymour Pomrenze, one of “the Monuments Men,” at the Offenbach Archival Depot. There are two scrapbooks of archival markings from the books sorted at the Offenbach Depot in the Seymour Pomrenze Collection held by the American Jewish Historical Society (Call number P-933) There is a finding aid for the collection here The digitized scrapbooks are available here and here. For more information on this project check the Center’s blog: 16thstreet.tumblr.com/tagged/Offenbach-Depot Dr. Mitch Fraas, Acting Director of the Digital Humanities Forum at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries' Special Collections Center is working on a similar project for the German book stamps based on NARA microfilm of the volumes the American Jewish Historical Society currently holds. Glass plate negative image of Australian landscape, possibly along the Hawkesbury River NSW, 1880-1909
Description: The Hall collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races. This image belongs to a series of photographs probably taken on the Hawkesbury River by William Frederick Hall between 1880 and 1909. The ANMM undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. This record has been updated accordingly. Object no. 00002366

Auditioning for the Ministry of Funny Walks
Description: Clearly this was a carefully staged and posed photo of the British Army barracks in Tralee, County Kerry! Telephone, Television but all preceded by Telegraph Towers
Description: Mutton Island off Kilmurry in County Clare might not be the place that one would expect to have been one of the links in a communications chain that helped protect an Empire? Final resting place
Description: The Great and the Good gather at the graveside of the little man in the top hat with the gentle smile, as many of us will remember the late President Seán T. O'Kelly who died in 1966. Dignitaries of the church are there aplenty to honour a man whose commitment to the church was always evident. His political friends are present but I find it hard to identify any from the other parties but that might be a lack of knowledge of who might have been there. Searching through the crowd should make an interesting day? Photographers: Unknown Collection: Sean T. Description: "BLANKETING MRS. O'NEILL" a strange image from the Mason Photographic Collection. A circle of Scottish soldiers in their traditional kilts, caubeens and tartan socks bouncing a naked lady on a blanket seems like great sport for the soldiers. The onlooking lady and gent likewise seem amused though the lady seems rather more preoccupied? Given Mason's history of illustrated talks and presentations there must be a story behind the image? Ladies learning ladylike lessons

Horse power from Campbell
Description: We have visited many of Irelands Lighthouses over the years, but I do not think we have ever been to the one at Roche’s Point. Here we see the 17 horsepower Campbell oil engine and air compressor, it was installed at the Lighthouse in County Cork. I wonder what the machine was used for. Compressed air for a foghorn? I would also be nice to ascertain what type of oil the machine ran on. Photographer: Ball, Robert S. Oh no! Not Sligo again...
Description: We know that we have been to Sligo so many times recently but to be honest it is such a beautiful county that it deserves lots of visits. Ireland's forgotten hero?
Description: The Redmond family have a long history in Wexford and their patriotism can hardly be doubted though to all intents and purposes their role is almost erased from history. Fabled in song and in story - Drumcliffe Churchyard
Description: No doubt there's many a rustic man and woman in the Churchyard at Drumcliffe but most people will associate it with a Nobel Prize winning poet and his cryptic epitaph. Nobody to kill time in Ballywillan
Description: A visit to the wonderful Mr. O'Dea's collection today and a deserted railway station at Ballywillan, County Longford. The track nearest the stations premises is in good nick whereas on the other side the sleepers are up, the rails are aside and it looks like it is curtains at least for the second line. I wonder was Ballywillan on the Dublin to Sligo line and if so is it still on the go? Apology: I have egg on my face after yesterday completely misreading the title on the Hogan image from Cork:-( GOOD NEWS KLAXON: Keep an eye out for this programme featuring our very own Elinor Wiltshire and some of her photographs that we have featured here. Remembering Lady Alice
Description: A magnificent memorial to a lady in Killarney Cemetery to end our week. What's going on here now?
Description: A peeler without a cap badge, the Guild Hall with works going on outside and men standing about gossiping like auld wans - what's going on here now? Derry's Guild Hall, that iconic building that has featured so much in recent years as seen from the quays. That peeler has a fine, well groomed beard which probably tells us that he is a senior man who knows all there is to be known about what is actually going on? Dev in shades
Description: No soft Homburg, and definitely no top hat for Mr De Valera today. Instead he has donned a fetching pair of dark sunglasses. Now we don't know where or whose funeral this was, or if indeed, it was a funeral. Might it have been a commemorative event? Also, we'd love confirmation that Margaret Pearse and Tomás Derrig (Ó Deirg) are in this photo too? What band was this? Their insignia looks quite distinctive. A watery bridge near Kingstown?
Description: A lovely river scene from the Eason Collection to end the week with the title " Bridge near Kingstown, Co. Dublin"! I've had a look but haven't managed to see a bridge yet. Unless that is that this an "Irish Bridge"? Back in 1995 I was fortunate enough to spend several weeks in Israel/Palestine territory and while driving through the desert near the Dead Sea we passed several signs stating "Irish Bridge" and when I enquired what that was the response was a place where you might cross if the water was not too deep during floods! Description: Laide Ancient Cross in Cushendall in County Antrim looks pristine and newly minted. No heifers, no cows, only a solitary Bullock
Description: It is always interesting to see how a small fishing village where the original inhabitants once struggled to make a living and where conditions were brutally harsh can become a place for the wealthy and famous! Dalkey is on such and the spread of the socially mobile denizens of the city of Dublin along the coast has swallowed it up like a fungus. It brings out the cynic in this Mary! Not quite the seafront in Bray but out there on the Southside as a reminder of the interment yesterday of the late singer, Sinead O'Connor. Let Lemass lead on!
Description: An image from the lovely Elinor Wiltshire to start this week after the August bank holiday. Fitzwilliam Street Lower Houses on St. Stephen's Green in the process of destruction, while high up are posters for Fianna Fáil with an image of the leader and the slogan "Let Lemass Lead on"! With some of the family I recently visited the museum at 14 Henrietta Street, and one of the images that came up was one of Elinor's from Ballymun, with the young girls we have already seen and identified. It gave me a lift to see her work, and its association with a time in Dublin!
