26 March 1919
Description: TWAM Ref: TWCMS:M4407 A. Reyrolle & Co. Ltd was founded by Alphonse Reyrolle (1864 - 1919), a French engineer who established a small switchgear shop in London in 1886. In 1901 his business moved to Hebburn and the firm began to grow with the recruitment of Henry Clothier. Clothier helped them develop large switchgears for power stations, a product the company became famous for. Over the years, Reyrolle continued to grow, seeing a number of mergers. Most notably with C.A Parsons in 1968 and Rolls Royce in 1989. The Hebburn site is now owned by Siemens who acquired the company in 2005. This photograph shows construction at A.Reyrolle & Co. Ltd in Hebburn on 26 March 1919. If you have some extra information about this photograph, please add your comments, information and any links, images or text. A picture of a picture picturing the picture?
Description: An imperial plate of a painting in the National Gallery of Ireland just around the corner from the Library. An unusual one I imagine with a strange scene that clearly was not witnessed by the artist. Men in armour, long sharp spears, castles on the hill and dead and dying in the foreground. A time of great rejoicing it was not! Culm in the water?
Description: A neighbour was a lighthouse keeper and that could be quite a lonely occupation but at least the lighthouses were on terra firma. What was it like to be a light keeper in a lightship? The Fastnet wasn't going anywhere once the tower had been built but those things could shift or even lose their moorings and take off which was likely to be in a storm. They were great men! Long lines and rocky waters
Description: The fascination with the Fastnet Rock continues with an different photo for the end of the week. The Krazy Kataloguer describes this as an "Aerial View" of the SS Irene docked at the Fastnet but I imagine that "Aerial" is a bit of a stretch. This was clearly taken from high up on the column of the light. Photographer: Ball, Robert S. All standing still in Clifden!
Description: A photograph that Mr. O'Dea would have been jealous of, Clifden station taken on an Imperial plate with lots of station staff to watch the operation. On a weekend with very low temperatures it's good to contemplate days where heavy coats and jackets are surplus to requirements and there is warmth in the air! Clifden in the summer would fit the bill and so we can look with envy at the people waiting to board the train to go somewhere nice and pleasant. Description: Johnny Roche had a tower with a tree on top, he loved to dance and never stop, He lived in Cork near the corner shop, But why has he got a tree on top! It has come to the weekend and it's cold outside. An Elizabethan railway station
Description: We normally associate those timber framed buildings with the Elizabethan era but there is also an abundance of faux Elizabethan about and this must be one of those. A Gallant and Four Gallans
Description: A gallant gentleman poses with the Four Gallans on his land. Mr. John Moran appears proud of his connection to the land and the ancient history it contains.. Where did the word "Gallans" come from and are they all still standing or have they been sacrificed to progress. I had occasion last weekend to visit Lough Gur in County Limerick and that area has a lot of stone age and later artifacts and clearly some have been lost over the years due to a lack of appreciation of what they were and what they symbolised! Four Poets for the price of one?
Description: Given the wonderful command of language and the many great writers it has produced four Poets in Kerry should hardly have been that much cause for celebration? The Four Poets Memorial in Killarney seems to have focused on some of their muses from long ago and that would be a worthwhile exercise as there are so many today those might be lost in the many? Can the Araucaria Araucana live for a century?
Description: This is a joy of a photo which was commissioned by Mr. Mathews of Newrath, Waterford in 1922. We want to find the location of the nice house. We want to discover the names of the three people in the garden. But most importantly of all we want to see a streetview of the house with two giant Monkey Puzzle trees in the front garden! Cromane Mussel Purification Station.
Description: Cromane County Kerry must be an interesting place. Straight away it said Romance in Menorca to me, which reminded me of a story the real Morning Mary told me about a girl’s holiday on the island back in the 1980’s (my lips are sealed). Carved font at Clonard, Kinnegad, Co. Westmeath.
Description: We have a photo from the Tourist Association of a Carved font at Clonard, believed to be from the 13th Century. I see that "the earliest baptismal fonts were designed for full immersion, and were often cross-shaped with steps (usually three, for the Trinity) leading down into them" I wonder when this type of font was widely introduced? Dublin United Tramways, Route Nos. 9, 11, 16, Cabra Depot
Description: A rare visit to the Dublin Trams Collection to see this lovely photograph. When we talk trams and particularly Dublin trams it always surprises me that the network was so extensive. It is a shame that they disappeared in favour of the diesel driven bus. I think it fair to say that it would cost many billions of Euros to replace the network today. I have also just noticed the name of the photographer Mr Camwell, what an appropriate name for a man in his profession. Phoenix Park Racecourse, Co. Dublin
Description: My Father God rest him, was a great race-going man. He did like a Saturday afternoon or a mid-week evening meeting at the Phoenix Park. I remember him telling me that it was difficult to identify the winning horse in a very close finish as the winning post was at an acute angle to most of the viewing areas. He used this anomaly in an effort to profit by betting on "photo finishes" with the bookmakers. Billy Byrne's Raleigh All Steel ... and his house
Description: Question? Can a Monkey Puzzle tree ride a bicycle? No, I didn't think so but it is making a decent effort anyway! Yet another strange and wonderful image from the Irish Tourism Association showing Billy Byrne's house in Co. Wicklow. Billy has his bicycle parked beside his Andes Pine aka Monkey Puzzle tree with one either side and two fine flower pots. Curtains of water, gently falling down
Description: We've been to the Dodder before but not, I think, to this particular section? The weir at Rathfarnham looking magnificent with curtains of water gently falling down as the river makes it's way to Dublin Bay and the sea. Once upon a time I did kayaking and when there was a lot of rain there would be great excitement in that community as the Dodder would be suitable for a run. The Beech tree by the Brookes
Description: Yet another from the strange collection by the Irish Tourism Association Collection. A Beech tree planted by Henry Brooke, father of Charlotte and marking the site of their house in Corfad. Nine Dean(s) NOT DEAN it's DENN
Description: My oh my but the Dean family from Waterside in Waterford scrubbed up well for the family portrait. They all look quite serious but comfortable in their own skin. Morning Mary is particularly taken by the Missus, she looks like the kind of woman who ran an efficient but loving household. From Pat Kelly zbjzatlw83 They are the Denn family not Dean. Photo was indeed 1946. My mother’s family. Grandad was actually the cook in St Otteran’s Hospital, and after retiring was Commissionaire in the Olympia Ballroom. My grandmother May Denn née Rolleston won the Championship of all Ireland in Irish Dancing in the August 1917 Oireachtas. Thomas Ashe played the pipes for her in his last public performance before his arrest and death on hunger strike. Éamon de Valera, fresh from election as MP for East Clare, presented Nanny with her gold medal. All nationalist Ireland’s leaders were there including these two surviving Commandants from 1916 Rising, of 5 Brigade and 3 Brigade Dublin. This photo was the last time all our family were together, the occasion being Bill top left in photo emigrating. Aunt Phyllis, bottom left, died July 1948 of leukaemia. That’s my mother Patricia in the white blouse, she became a computer operator in 1957 in America, later worked in admin in what is now the IEEE. This project is wonderful. Photographer: A. H.
