The First Jewish Workers Club in Yekaterinoslav
Description: As it was a busy industrial city, Dnipropetovsk also provided a rich urban setting for the development of a large and active Jewish community. Jewish workers were involved in numerous trades in the city, but Jewish life extended beyond the shop walls. Dnipropetovsk was home to several synagogues as well as a variety of political and social institutions. During the early 20th century the city was a site of much political action amongst Jews aligned with different ideologies such as the Jewish Labor Bund and various Zionist parties. These various political associations frequently had their own networks of clubs, libraries, publications and other support institutions. This book stamp belongs to one such Yidisher Arbeter Klub (Jewish Workers Club), a club associated with the thinker Ber Borokhov whose Labor Zionism fused elements of socialism and Zionism into a single platform. While the Jewish community of Dnipropetrovsk initially bloomed in the years immediately following the Russian Revolution – the forces of repression, collectivization, and famines in the early 1930s diminished the size of the Jewish community. The once thriving Jewish community of Dnipropetrovsk, and its surrounding agricultural regions, was destroyed in the invasion by Nazi forces. This stamp remains testament to the flourishing of Jewish political life that had once taken place in that city. This book stamp is from a book looted by the Nazis and sorted by Colonel Seymour Pomrenze, one of “the Monuments Men,” at the Offenbach Archival Depot. There are two scrapbooks of archival markings from the books sorted at the Offenbach Depot in the Seymour Pomrenze Collection held by the American Jewish Historical Society (Call number P-933) There is a finding aid for the collection here The digitized scrapbooks are available here and here. 10 footer vessel on Sydney Harbour
Description: This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s William Hall collection. The Hall collection combines photographs from both William J Hall and his father William Frederick Hall. The images provide an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes studio portraits and images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races. The Australian National Maritime Museum undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. If you can identify a person, vessel or landmark, write the details in the Comments box below. Thank you for helping caption this important historical image. Object number 00010563

Glass plate negative image of Australian landscape, possibly along the Hawkesbury River NSW, 1880-1909
Description: The Hall collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races. This image belongs to a series of photographs probably taken on the Hawkesbury River by William Frederick Hall between 1880 and 1909. The ANMM undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. This record has been updated accordingly. Object no. 00002366

18-footer ARGO (ex HC PRESS III) in front of SCEGS boatshed
Description: The original boatshed for Sydney Church of England Grammar School, or Shore School, was situated at Berry's Bay. The school acquired its own boatshed in Looking Glass Bay in 1919, presented to them by Mr Russell Sinclair, in memory of his son. This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s William Hall collection. The Hall collection combines photographs from both William J Hall and his father William Frederick Hall - the latter of which is likely to have taken this image. Landsfengselet for kvinner (tidl.
Arkivreferanse: Riksarkivet, S-1043Ua6_033r

One man and an island
Description: The landing pier on the Great Blasket Island off the coast of Kerry gives a very clear indication of just how rough and rugged the land and the water could be in that place. When this photo was taken the principal means of accessing the islands was a boat similar to the "Náomhóg" that one can see on the left propped up on timbers. Morning Mary went to the Great Blasket a few years ago and the landing stage has changed but is readily recognisable from the image. Get thee to a nunnery
Description: At first glance this looks like an Alpine scene but that may be the POV chosen by Mr. French when taking this image of the convent in Portlaw? Definitely treading on the territory of Mr. Poole but he has managed to capture a sense of stillness and contemplation even if it was only for the camera! The grave in the centre of the lawn looks relatively recent which may or may not be an indicator of the date the photo was taken? High Noon on Wellington Street
Description: A fine Imperial Plate of a pretty deserted Wellington Street in Ballymena, County Antrim seems to be rather a waste, unless you are an admirer of horse apples? The street is not entirely deserted. On the top left, a man is giving a demonstration of a stance very seldom seen nowadays. He has his hands across his back and inside his jacket, which I always believed came from the wearing of tails? Resting after a job well done?
Description: When you can fill a gap in one fell swoop, why not take the opportunity? Mr. Sampson of Downpatrick, while building a drystone wall, pulled this rock out of the ground and filled a great big gap, saving him a whole lot of digging and lifting!! Well, he probably built the wall up on either side of the rock and used it in situ, but now he can rest after his labours! De de de deja vu again and again???
Description: As you can see from the photo and the title we have visited this location many times before BUT if Research Mary has chosen this one then there must be a good reason? One might be that the image is on an Imperial Plate which means that one can almost read Daniel O'Connell's thoughts. Seculareligious
Description: A visit to the lovely Clonbrock Collection and on the day that Storm Debi is battering the country, we have a lovely image of summer with an elegantly dressed lady complete with wide-brimmed hat and parasol sitting on a lawn! It's a long way from Mizen to Malin
Description: If the information that I was taught in my schooldays is correct then it is approx. 300 miles from Mizen to Malin, or the length of the island of Ireland. The two signallers from the Commissioners of Irish Lights have a fairly primitive antenna on display here, and I wonder if it had the range to cover that distance? Photographer: Ball, Robert S. Auditioning for the Ministry of Funny Walks
Description: Clearly this was a carefully staged and posed photo of the British Army barracks in Tralee, County Kerry! The lines of soldiers in uniform had the easy parts as all they had to do was stand still, but those under the command of the Gym Sergeant had to do squats and hold them while Mr. French clicked his lens. Telephone, Television but all preceded by Telegraph Towers
Description: Mutton Island off Kilmurry in County Clare might not be the place that one would expect to have been one of the links in a communications chain that helped protect an Empire? If you wish to find it on the map don't fall for a straightforward "Kilmurry" because Clare has a collection of them. A Rival for Trinity?

Bumps for her birthday suit?
Description: "BLANKETING MRS. O'NEILL" a strange image from the Mason Photographic Collection. A circle of Scottish soldiers in their traditional kilts, caubeens and tartan socks bouncing a naked lady on a blanket seems like great sport for the soldiers. The onlooking lady and gent likewise seem amused though the lady seems rather more preoccupied? Given Mason's history of illustrated talks and presentations there must be a story behind the image? Horse power from Campbell
Description: We have visited many of Irelands Lighthouses over the years, but I do not think we have ever been to the one at Roche’s Point. Nobody to kill time in Ballywillan
Description: A visit to the wonderful Mr. O'Dea's collection today and a deserted railway station at Ballywillan, County Longford. The track nearest the stations premises is in good nick whereas on the other side the sleepers are up, the rails are aside and it looks like it is curtains at least for the second line.
