Foreign Delegation of the Russian Socialist Revolutionary Party
Description: The Socialist Revolutionary Party was a major political party in Russia in the early twentieth century. It was a revolutionary socialist party espousing a democratic and agrarian socialist platform. It was not a Marxist political party, although some of its members considered themselves Marxists. It’s philosophical roots lay in the Narodnik movement in 1860s and 1870s Russia, which can be summarized as a populist movement where some in the Russian middle class wanted to get closer to “the people”, meaning mostly the peasantry, with some even agitating for revolution against the Tsar. One of their most distinguishing features setting them apart from the Russian Social Democratic Labor Parties (both Bolshevik and Menshevik) was that they favored land socialization over land nationalization. This basically meant they preferred to split up the land among peasants rather than have it be under state control. This also made them more popular among the peasants than most other revolutionary groups. After the February Revolution, the Socialist Revolutionaries made up part of the Provisional Government, but played less of a role than the RSDLP Mensheviks. After the October Revolution of the Bolsheviks, one faction of the Socialist Revolutionaries refused to cooperate with the Bolsheviks and the other cooperated with the Bolsheviks until the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk signed by them in 1918. Based on a popular vote done shortly before the Treaty was signed, they were by far the most popular party in the country. Despite this, during and after the Russian Civil War of 1917-1922 the Socialist Revolutionaries who did not join the Bolsheviks were suppressed in various ways. Many of them left the newly formed U.S.S.R. for other countries. Some of these Socialist Revolutionaries founded the Foreign Delegation of the Russian Socialist Revolutionary Party in Berlin in 1922, whose main political goal was rousing awareness of and opinion against the mounting Bolshevik repressions of their party fellows back in the U.S.S.R. This stamp is in French and Russian. The Foreign Delegation did publish materials relating to their cause in several languages, including French, and there was a Paris-based group of Socialist Revolutionaries who mostly supported the Foreign Delegation’s activities. The French language on the stamp could be related to one of these factors. This book stamp is from a book looted by the Nazis and sorted by Colonel Seymour Pomrenze, one of “the Monuments Men,” at the Offenbach Archival Depot. There are two scrapbooks of archival markings from the books sorted at the Offenbach Depot in the Seymour Pomrenze Collection held by the American Jewish Historical Society (Call number P-933) There is a finding aid for the collection here The digitized scrapbooks are available here and here. Whip-Poor-Will Lodge
Description: The Whip-Poor-Will Lodge was located at the north end of Mazinaw Lake, about 20 Km north of the village of Cloyne, Ontario, Canada. It was built in its original layout in the mid to late 1930s. The Levens family which, owned a farm house on the east side of the river above the bridge at the head of Mazinaw Lake, built the original lodge building in the mid 1930s after their endeavours with the Bon Echo Inn and they had decided to stay in the tourist business. The lodge was subsequently sold to people named Anderson who owned the place for only 2 or 3 years. Unfortunately, no one really remembers the Andersons. The lodge was sold to Mort Hughes around 1940, who lived in or near Watertown, NY. It was managed and looked after by Amos Hughes, who in addition to having an hotel in Arden, Ontario, dabbled in real estate. The lodge was closed, or at least operated at a much reduced capacity during the war years to 1944, after which it was owned and operated by the Waldie family. The "Old House", mentioned above was part of the sale and was subsequently rented out to tourists. When Waldies bought the lodge there were only 7 cabins and the farm house. They built 6 more cottages with all tourists eating in the dining room of the lodge. Hazel Waldie's cooking was renown. The lodge consisted of the main structure pictured here which acted as the dining room , lounge and square dance area for the guests who were housed in the adjacent cabins spread over the large property. This photo was taken probably around 1953 after the addition and large fireplace were added on the south side of the of the original structure. The lodge changed hands several times after that and finally burned in the mid 1970s, with the chimney still standing as a monument, still evident currently. Lodge history from the memories of Karyl (Waldie) Inwood & Ian Brumell

Mr. Gray composing his elegy?
Description: On this Good Friday, when church services have been curtailed/prohibited due to the pandemic, it seems appropriate that we go to church? The Rocky Waters ford
Description: Having scaled the intellectual heights of Rūmī and George Herbert, Morning Mary felt the need to come back down to earth, and the wonderful Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection is perfect to lift the mood! The ruins are not yet ruined...
Description: The Ruins of Tully Church in Kildare don't look too ruined in this Eason image. Perhaps two images were wrongly catalogued? This church looks in good condition, and those standing outside would be in a position to give testimony, but are probably long gone? +++ UPDATE +++ Definitely a bit of rogue cataloguing or “computer says daft thing” going on here. Not ruined. And not Tully Church. We are at least in the right county. This is actually St. Brigid’s RC church in Kildare town. The tower used to have four big statues. “Who pinched the Apostles?” (as the actress said to the bishop) – We can always rely on our beloved beachcomber australia to lower the tone! Thankfully. :) On a more serious note, this church seems to have been rather ill-fated in the statue department, as a statue fell from the new altar inside in 1886, killing Dr. Kavanagh, parish priest. Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit – Happy Saint Patrick's Day
Description: We would like to wish all our viewers and commentators a very Happy Saint Patrick's Day I am not sure what river this is, but I do know that Saint Patrick's Day is the day when angling opens on any river that has not already opened on the 1st March. Living close to the River Dodder as a child, I remember the anglers would gather on the 16th March as the clock approached midnight and as soon as the hour had passed, they would fish away in an effort to catch the first trout of the season. It must be said that one or two of the anglers were "the worse for wear" having come to the river directly from closing time at the local pub! The rocky road to nowhere?
Description: The RFA (Royal Field Artillery?) Barracks in Kildare is the feature of this Eason image, though it looks like a drab and unusual terrace of houses. What were these houses? Were they billets for the troops, or married quarters? +++ UPDATE +++ These were Married Quarters for the Royal Field Artillery in the barracks in Kildare, that went on to be called Magee Barracks from 1938. The odd curvy roof features have survived on some of the houses on what is now Magee Terrace in Kildare Town. John Spooner unearthed some frankly terrifying articles about ‘clean, cosy, and compact’ married quarters, from a woman’s perspective – this one from February 1900... Fascinating Fastnet’s fearless construction workers.
Description: One of Ireland’s most challenging and successful engineering projects, carried out in extremely difficult and hazardous conditions. The Fastnet Lighthouse is iconic for mariners who pass through the waters off the south coast of Ireland, and the subject of many fine photographs. It gives Morning Mary the willies even looking at those men on the structure! +++ UPDATE +++ A really striking photograph that would stop most of us from moaning about our working environments! Great to identify one of these men – master stonemason James Kavanagh is in the white coat with his back to the camera. According to many sources, Mr Kavanagh “placed every stone of the lighthouse with his bare hands”. Unfortunately, he died before the Fastnet light came into use. Photographers: Robert S. Chief Secretary's Lodge now Deerfield, Phoenix Park, Dublin.
Description: Another day in the Phoenix Park is always welcome, especially for any of us living more than 5 Km from there in this time of "lock down". I think I know some of the history of this house, but I am very happy to wait and read the facts you discover before I comment. I have used this strategy before and it has served me well, in that most times what I thought I knew was in fact incorrect. We live and learn! Over to you. +++ UPDATE +++ Really enjoyable stream of comments below that I would encourage you to read – arguments about official buildings in the Phoenix Park, diplomatic relations (FURIOUS Irish Bishops!), missing conservatories, windows that don't match. The job is OXO!
Description: I know, I know! Your deja vus are having a bad case of deja vu, but this photograph of Harcourt Street Station was too good to pass. There is so much to see here, the station itself, the luggage trolleys, the fashion, and the advertising hoardings. The messenger boy’s bicycle parked at the footpath is a real reminder of days gone by, and cheeky devils flying about the streets with their loads for delivery! +++ UPDATE +++ Gorgeous posters in this one! And very helpful they were too. Dates for the fillum Monte Carlo (“As Intimate as a Lady’s Boudoir”, if you don't mind!) in the Irish Times and an excursion to Tramore gave us a really close date of in or around early August 1931. Braeside' and 'Burnside' under construction, Kidman & Mayoh, shipbuilders, Kissing Point Park, Ryde, Sydney, c. 1920, Arthur Ernest Foster
Description: Braeside' and 'Burnside' under construction, Kidman & Mayoh, shipbuilders, Kissing Point Park, Ryde, Sydney, c. 1920, Arthur Ernest Foster, glass negatives, Series 02 chiefly Sydney, ca. 1916-1947, [collection.sl.nsw.gov.au/record/9O4oZprn/2pjWxXdJvkXvP Box 17 No. 178] Both ships never went into service due to structural issues. The Burnside was sold to the Union Box & Timber Company of Annandale who stripped accessible portions of the structure and in September 1923 what remained of the ship was burnt on the stocks. In December 1923 the Braeside was towed outside Sydney Heads and set on fire. It burned through the night.

FLYING HIGH IN CELEBRATION – 90 MILLION VIEWS
Description: Today we are celebrating having reached 90,000,000 views, and to mark the occasion we have been given access to the aerial photography of Alexander “Monkey” Morgan. So for today what could be better than to have a parade, a St. Patrick’s Day Parade to be sure, but with a wonderful view of Dublin’s city centre from high in the sky. Which is where Monkey Morgan was of course! As we post his images in the future, it is going to pose its own challenges seeing places from a very different PoV!!!! +++ UPDATE +++ I think it's safe to say that we're going to very much enjoy the lofty point of view that Monkey Morgan’s photos will give us. We've established the exact date for this one – Thursday, 17 March 1955, and also that the parade started from St. Stephen’s Green at 11am. It went up one side of O'Connell Street, and then back down the other, which certainly seems to give better value to spectators than modern parades. You couldn't miss a thing that way. And 'twas far from a St. Patrick's Festival the parade was in those days. It was sombrely called the Industries Parade, and was organised by the National Agricultural and Industrial Development Association. We found out there were about 250,000 spectators on this day, and thanks to Sharon Corbet, we know there was “a bit of an incident”! Is Belfast Fish, Flesh or Fowl?
Description: A wonderful Eason image for today with High Street, Belfast in all its glory. Trams, carriages, sidecars, pedestrians, all on a long, busy High Street with awnings out to protect the windows from the sun. Looking at the long dresses of the ladies, I suspect that it was taken at the early part of the date range – if not before? One thing for sure, there are no microwave hairdo's on display :-) Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Between 1900-1920 NLI Ref: Eas 417 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Lucan, the most exotic place for taking the waters!
Description: Growing up and reading that members of the nobility would travel to far off places to “Take the waters”, it seemed that it was unlikely that we would have something similar close by. Lisdoonvarna in the midst of the wonderful Burren seemed to be an aberration, but due to the nature of the place it seemed understandable. Lucan on the other hand, on the outskirts of Dublin City, might not have been seen in the same light, but here is proof positive that indeed there was a Spa in Lucan. Hiding your Granny behind the gate?
Description: St. James’ Villa, Malahide in North County Dublin appears to be all alone in the field, but that will have changed dramatically in the intervening years! A gentleman with two young ladies, and what appears to be an older lady, pose for this Eason image. Given that the Eason Collection photographs were generally intended for use as postcards, one wonders what was the significance of this house and/or the family? +++ UPDATE +++ Some beautiful Malahide family reconstructions in evidence here. Everyone seemed to enjoy this one, and a special thank you, An Poc Ar Buile, for your deep dive into newspapers, allowing you to show changes of ownership for this lovely house, St James' Villa, in 1902, 1905, and 1910 (when it was sold as part of the estate of William Parkinson). Bernard Healy then leapt into the fray with evidence about the Parkinson family (not all happy) from family history records. Rocky Road to Roundstone Retreat
Description: The Monastery in Roundstone cannot complain at the lack of stone for building! Rocks galore all round and on the other side of the bay, make this a fairly bleak place to found a monastery. The fortified gate is interesting. Was this a protection against Vikings, pirates, or other raiders? We have been to Roundstone recently but this lovely Lawrence image is well worth the return visit. +++ UPDATE +++ Around the rugged rocks, you ragged rascals ran – trying to differentiate between two alleged monasteries in Roundstone, not helped by apparently conflicting dates on 6" maps and the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. Bernard Healy confirmed that “our” monastery was definitely Franciscan, noting that cartographers may have been confusing it with a much earlier Dominican establishment. Waiting for Godot?
Description: It is many years since Morning Mary was in Ballina and even longer since she was in Ardnaree but this sight, apart from the people, is very familiar. On the “wrong” side of the river from the bulk of the town, it was the site of a famous boxing club, but close to many of the attractions of Ballina of that time! Patiently waiting for the fall?
Description: A fine Royal Plate from the Lawrence Collection featuring a geological oddity near Kenmare in Co. Kerry. “Green Stone on Lime” is the title which probably means that it is an erratic dating from the last ice age? Is it still there intact, or has the pollution and the increased movement of people toppled what thousands of years could not do? +++ UPDATE +++ It is still outstanding in its field! And well done, that derangedlemur and that beachcomber australia, for finding this scientific description of our mighty stone wonder in The Irish Naturalist, September 1898, which would have been published around the time this photo was taken: “Carrigacappeen, a very remarkable erratic of Old Red grit, standing on a 6-foot pillar of Carboniferous Limestone, a striking example of denudation by solution since the Glacial Epoch”. A jewel in the crown
Description: It has been a long time since we had an image from the Wiltshire Collection, so an early morning view of Iveagh House seems like a great way to redress that loss! This is one of Morning Mary’s favourite buildings in Dublin and the interior is even better than it’s splendid exterior! +++ UPDATE +++ We had a fabulously ghosty story from Bernard Healy about Holy Thursdays in Dublin, and the widespread belief that a cross appeared in one of the windows of Iveagh House – so widespread that crowds used to gather outside in the hopes of seeing the cross. An article in the Evening Herald newspaper from June 1976 confirmed this long-held Dublin belief. Sadly, it seems it was just a great story, and nothing but “a natural flaw in the original glass caused the vision of the cross”. And do read beachcomber australia's story from Trove for a flaming example of a scathing Edwardian burn against Lord Iveagh and his decorating notions... We came across a cross.
Description: While searching the archive, I came across this photograph of a cross in stereo, and I immediately said to myself, they will never find the location! Description: To end a bizarre week, we have this charming image captured during a visit by the Clonbrocks to the Aran Islands. The stub of an ancient cross, set among the rocky fields, and emphasising its age, there are two young locals – a lad and a lassie. What can we find out about it, and when was it taken? +++ UPDATE +++ Well, the best thing we found out about this photograph is that we need to horizontally flip it in our catalogue. Description: Two workmen emerging from the tunnel mouth with a tub of excavated clay. The Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels were opened to the people of Tyneside on 24th July 1951. The Model School in Enniscorthy
Description: The Model School sounds like a school in miniature, but there are quite a few throughout the country. Some of them are large institutions like this one in Enniscorthy, others are smaller. But they all appear to have been excellent places of education. Morning Mary attended one, and has many happy memories made rosier by the passage of time, no doubt! +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks, Domhnall Sioradáin, for explaining that Model Schools were part of the original model (Domhnall couldn't resist!) for national primary education in Ireland, 1831. Model schools were set up, and older bright pupils would act as monitor apprentices and later become teachers. In 1870, model schools were replaced by 2-year residential training colleges, such as Carysfort in Dublin.
