Description: Somehow this image comes with a sense of déjà vu, and one finds it hard to square with Prince of Wales Avenue in Belfast, but that is what the catalogue says and we must go with that? A very rural, dare I say it, almost a seaside atmosphere on this one. Fine houses, well spaced out. would make a very desirable location. The ruins are not yet ruined...

Description: The Ruins of Tully Church in Kildare don't look too ruined in this Eason image. Perhaps two images were wrongly catalogued? This church looks in good condition, and those standing outside would be in a position to give testimony, but are probably long gone? +++ UPDATE +++ Definitely a bit of rogue cataloguing or “computer says daft thing” going on here. Not ruined. And not Tully Church. We are at least in the right county. This is actually St. Brigid’s RC church in Kildare town. The tower used to have four big statues. “Who pinched the Apostles?” (as the actress said to the bishop) – We can always rely on our beloved beachcomber australia to lower the tone! Thankfully. :) On a more serious note, this church seems to have been rather ill-fated in the statue department, as a statue fell from the new altar inside in 1886, killing Dr. Kavanagh, parish priest. Description: We would like to wish all our viewers and commentators a very Happy Saint Patrick's Day I am not sure what river this is, but I do know that Saint Patrick's Day is the day when angling opens on any river that has not already opened on the 1st March. Living close to the River Dodder as a child, I remember the anglers would gather on the 16th March as the clock approached midnight and as soon as the hour had passed, they would fish away in an effort to catch the first trout of the season. It must be said that one or two of the anglers were "the worse for wear" having come to the river directly from closing time at the local pub! The rocky road to nowhere?

Description: The RFA (Royal Field Artillery?) Barracks in Kildare is the feature of this Eason image, though it looks like a drab and unusual terrace of houses. What were these houses? Were they billets for the troops, or married quarters? +++ UPDATE +++ These were Married Quarters for the Royal Field Artillery in the barracks in Kildare, that went on to be called Magee Barracks from 1938. The odd curvy roof features have survived on some of the houses on what is now Magee Terrace in Kildare Town. John Spooner unearthed some frankly terrifying articles about ‘clean, cosy, and compact’ married quarters, from a woman’s perspective – this one from February 1900... Fascinating Fastnet’s fearless construction workers.

When?

Description: One of Ireland’s most challenging and successful engineering projects, carried out in extremely difficult and hazardous conditions. The Fastnet Lighthouse is iconic for mariners who pass through the waters off the south coast of Ireland, and the subject of many fine photographs. It gives Morning Mary the willies even looking at those men on the structure! +++ UPDATE +++ A really striking photograph that would stop most of us from moaning about our working environments! Great to identify one of these men – master stonemason James Kavanagh is in the white coat with his back to the camera. According to many sources, Mr Kavanagh “placed every stone of the lighthouse with his bare hands”. Unfortunately, he died before the Fastnet light came into use. Photographers: Robert S. There is so much to see here, the station itself, the luggage trolleys, the fashion, and the advertising hoardings. FLYING HIGH IN CELEBRATION – 90 MILLION VIEWS

Description: Today we are celebrating having reached 90,000,000 views, and to mark the occasion we have been given access to the aerial photography of Alexander “Monkey” Morgan. So for today what could be better than to have a parade, a St. Patrick’s Day Parade to be sure, but with a wonderful view of Dublin’s city centre from high in the sky. Which is where Monkey Morgan was of course! As we post his images in the future, it is going to pose its own challenges seeing places from a very different PoV!!!! +++ UPDATE +++ I think it's safe to say that we're going to very much enjoy the lofty point of view that Monkey Morgan’s photos will give us. We've established the exact date for this one – Thursday, 17 March 1955, and also that the parade started from St. Stephen’s Green at 11am. It went up one side of O'Connell Street, and then back down the other, which certainly seems to give better value to spectators than modern parades. You couldn't miss a thing that way. And 'twas far from a St. Patrick's Festival the parade was in those days. It was sombrely called the Industries Parade, and was organised by the National Agricultural and Industrial Development Association. We found out there were about 250,000 spectators on this day, and thanks to Sharon Corbet, we know there was “a bit of an incident”! Lucan, the most exotic place for taking the waters!

Description: Growing up and reading that members of the nobility would travel to far off places to “Take the waters”, it seemed that it was unlikely that we would have something similar close by. Lisdoonvarna in the midst of the wonderful Burren seemed to be an aberration, but due to the nature of the place it seemed understandable. Lucan on the other hand, on the outskirts of Dublin City, might not have been seen in the same light, but here is proof positive that indeed there was a Spa in Lucan. Description: St. James’ Villa, Malahide in North County Dublin appears to be all alone in the field, but that will have changed dramatically in the intervening years! A gentleman with two young ladies, and what appears to be an older lady, pose for this Eason image. Rocky Road to Roundstone Retreat

Description: The Monastery in Roundstone cannot complain at the lack of stone for building! Rocks galore all round and on the other side of the bay, make this a fairly bleak place to found a monastery. The fortified gate is interesting. Was this a protection against Vikings, pirates, or other raiders? We have been to Roundstone recently but this lovely Lawrence image is well worth the return visit. +++ UPDATE +++ Around the rugged rocks, you ragged rascals ran – trying to differentiate between two alleged monasteries in Roundstone, not helped by apparently conflicting dates on 6" maps and the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. Bernard Healy confirmed that “our” monastery was definitely Franciscan, noting that cartographers may have been confusing it with a much earlier Dominican establishment. Description: A fine Royal Plate from the Lawrence Collection featuring a geological oddity near Kenmare in Co. Kerry. “Green Stone on Lime” is the title which probably means that it is an erratic dating from the last ice age? Is it still there intact, or has the pollution and the increased movement of people toppled what thousands of years could not do? +++ UPDATE +++ It is still outstanding in its field! And well done, that derangedlemur and that beachcomber australia, for finding this scientific description of our mighty stone wonder in The Irish Naturalist, September 1898, which would have been published around the time this photo was taken: “Carrigacappeen, a very remarkable erratic of Old Red grit, standing on a 6-foot pillar of Carboniferous Limestone, a striking example of denudation by solution since the Glacial Epoch”. A jewel in the crown

Description: It has been a long time since we had an image from the Wiltshire Collection, so an early morning view of Iveagh House seems like a great way to redress that loss! This is one of Morning Mary’s favourite buildings in Dublin and the interior is even better than it’s splendid exterior! +++ UPDATE +++ We had a fabulously ghosty story from Bernard Healy about Holy Thursdays in Dublin, and the widespread belief that a cross appeared in one of the windows of Iveagh House – so widespread that crowds used to gather outside in the hopes of seeing the cross. An article in the Evening Herald newspaper from June 1976 confirmed this long-held Dublin belief. Sadly, it seems it was just a great story, and nothing but “a natural flaw in the original glass caused the vision of the cross”. We came across a cross.

Description: While searching the archive, I came across this photograph of a cross in stereo, and I immediately said to myself, they will never find the location! The catalogue description is equally nondescript. It says “Small rude stone cross of 1 piece” which must be one of the vaguest descriptions in the whole catalogue. Rocky beauties

Description: To end a bizarre week, we have this charming image captured during a visit by the Clonbrocks to the Aran Islands. The stub of an ancient cross, set among the rocky fields, and emphasising its age, there are two young locals – a lad and a lassie. What can we find out about it, and when was it taken? +++ UPDATE +++ Well, the best thing we found out about this photograph is that we need to horizontally flip it in our catalogue. The second-best thing is that it was taken before “the twenty-one cottages were built in 1914”. (Thank you, Mike, you're always great for the island information.) The Model School in Enniscorthy

Description: The Model School sounds like a school in miniature, but there are quite a few throughout the country. Some of them are large institutions like this one in Enniscorthy, others are smaller. But they all appear to have been excellent places of education. Morning Mary attended one, and has many happy memories made rosier by the passage of time, no doubt! +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks, Domhnall Sioradáin, for explaining that Model Schools were part of the original model (Domhnall couldn't resist!) for national primary education in Ireland, 1831. Model schools were set up, and older bright pupils would act as monitor apprentices and later become teachers. In 1870, model schools were replaced by 2-year residential training colleges, such as Carysfort in Dublin. Description: The title sums this one up! An ecclesiastical complex in the midst of tussocks of grass. Where, when, and what is it like now? I suspect that this is one that will be joining the “No longer standing” category? +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks to Sharon Corbet's prodigious memory, it turns out that we've visited this location before. It's the Hevey Institute in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. But sure lookit, while it might have been less craic for all of you, it means that another one of our photographs is now Location Identifed rather than languishing in our catalogue as “Institutional building, nine bays wide, (three under pediment of central element) with central tower”. So that can't be bad... Description: The coastline in Ballycastle, Co. Antrim as it appeared 100 years ago. At the head of the coast from the Glens of Antrim and at the foot of the Causeway Coast this is a very special wee town. But what can we find out about the town as it was then? Beetles, points and Foynes.

Description: For some reason O'Dea has made the trip down to Foynes in Co. Limerick to view a "Beetle" moving an empty wagon which can only mean that a new piece of kit is being trialed? Foynes was always a small town well down the Shannon Estuary from Limerick City and the ships passed it by to get to the port in the city. Victoria Hotel Mackay

When?

Description: Creator: Mackay Mackay Regional Council. Location: Mackay, Sarina, Queensland. Description: The Victoria Hotel was located on the north-west corner of Victoria and Macalister Streets, Mackay. First licensed by George Voysey in 1873, and then by Robert Neill in 1874, the hotel burned down on September 3, 1897 and was rebuilt. The hotel continued trading until the 1960s when it was demolished and the Whitsunday Hotel was built on the site (opened May 6, 1966). This photograph probably dates from the late 1930s when Chinatown buildings had been removed from the adjoining blocks.
