Down the old bog road
Description: Yesterday we had a couple bringing home the turf and today we have people living on the bog with a straight road leading off to the distant hills. The cataloguer seems to have been under the impression that the people were leaning on a rick of turf but it looks more like their home to me! Do you agree and where is it? Whether temporary or otherwise, the general consensus is that this is a picture dwelling. And O Mac has expertly pinpointed it to the road between Letterfrack and Kylemore Abbey in Connemara.... Bringing home the turf
Description: What appears picturesque today was a reality not that long ago for many people in remote areas of Ireland. Neddy the donkey was the chief source of power for transport. The creels on the back of the donkey would indicate terrain that was too rough for a cart or that the family were to poor to afford the cart. Times change? Thanks to BeachcomberAustralia for the (generally favoured) suggestion that we are in County Antrim, not too far from a relatively recent image of what appears to be some of the same people.... Ladies in crinolines with parasol in stereo - twice as nice!
Description: This crisp, clear and beautiful image from the Stereo Pairs Collection shows a very attractive building with two ladies in crinolines standing outside. The building itself is quite distinctive which should make it easy to identify? Unfortunately I don't see any dogs :-( The general consensus is that this is St. Anne’s Hydro and Turkish Bath in Blarney, County Cork. Which, according to Archiseek at least, dates to 1870, and narrows our range a bit. The building, including the clock we see here, is just about still standing.... Description: This Cable Station in County Kerry is bathed in sunshine and looking spruce! In the days when telegrams were the principal long range method of communication working in this building would have been the centre of activitiy. Waterville in good weather would be just heavenly.... .... Except this probably isn't Waterville. According to today's contributors, while this is County Kerry, someone has mistaken the cable station in Waterville for the one on Valentia. Description: The title on today's image from the Clonbrock Collection could be a really difficult clue from a cryptic crossword! "Wellington from F's room. Fishing" could easily be 12 down or perhaps 3 across? It is a photograph this time whereas most Clonbrock images up to now have been glass plates so after 70 million views we can begin with something different! There general consensus is that "Wellington" is Wellington College in Berkshire, and that the "F" who has a room here is perhaps Francis Marcus Crofton - grandson of Edith Dillon..... Thank you all for the fantastic support that enabled the NLI images to garner such an incredible level of viewing as well as the wonderful research and identification that has gone on. When spacemen walked the earth!
Description: This Morning Mary loves when visitors to Ireland who have not been here before come calling so that they can be taken to see the wonders of Newgrange! The workmanship on the enormous stones would be impressive in today's context but given that they were carried out more than 5,000 years ago they are phenomenal! Mr. Masons shot is very effective in its capture of the fine detail of this stone on the inside of the tomb chamber. Possibly a general view of Malahide, Co. Dublin

Thatched cottages and flats on the bicycle - oh bliss!
Description: To end the week where we have had doubles, rebels and Gandelows we now have a truly charming Eason shot. A man mends a bicycle outside the door of a thatched cottage with a young girl in a pinny standing behind him watching the photographer at work. In the background is a town or city marked by a high spire dominating the landscape. There is no doubt but this scene has changed drastically in the meantime, if we can locate it(?) Rory Sherlock was quick with the location and subject: Old Town in Letterkenny, County Donegal. The spire in the background is that of the Cathedral of St. Eunan and St. Columba, which opened in 1901.... So, for safety's sake, I've gone back to the ever reliable Mr. Poole for this mornings offering! Just in case there was any doubt about what was being advertised in this (extensive) window display, we have confirmation that Maclean's (note placement of the "a" and the apostrophe mister sign-writer) Opas Powder was an antacid marketed from at least the mid 1930s. In this case it is being heavily promoted by Curtis' pharmacy on Waterford's Barrack Street.... Photographer: A. H. Part of the area around the suburb of Rocklea, ca. 1950
Description: Creator: Unidentified. Location: Rocklea, Brisbane, Queensland. Description: Small blocks of land with garden beds growing vegetables adjoining a vacant lot. The suburb of Rocklea has a great deal of heavy industry including the General Electric Company of Australia (now Areva) on the corner of Evans Road and Beaudesert Road, Rocklea. During World War II, there was a large munitions plant in Rocklea that was bought back by the Queensland State Government and the Rocklea munition land and buildings were turned into an industrial estate. In the lower lying areas there had been dairy farming and the establishment of the Rocklea Fruit and Vegetable Markets that opened to the public in 1964 has good access to rail links and transport. Enniscorthy, Castleboro - river and steps
Description: A big house near Enniscorthy in County Wexford taken from the level of the river. There is mention of "steps" but I cannot see them! Can you? As confirmed by today's contributors (and indeed by Wikipedia), Castleboro House was one of the many estate houses which did not survive the 1920s intact. We're going on a bear hunt!
Description: A cave deep in the woods would always hold the attraction of exploration and the thrill of danger, especially for the young at heart! Where is this one and has the scene changed much in the last 150 years? Rory_Sherlock was first to identify this as 'Badger's Cave', one of the colourfully named features of Blarney Castle and Gardens, and one of at least two caves beneath the old castle itself. Deep in the valley O!
Description: To end the week after some really lovely images, here we have one from our Stereo Pairs Collection of an unidentified valley. It has a cluster of houses nestling below the heavily wooded slopes of a hill. (Congratulations Lemur for yesterdays identification, I didn't hold out much hope given the lack of detail behind but as ever you made it look simple!) And derangedlemur together with Niall McAuley was/were instrumental in identifying this one too. A task that was complicated no-end by the fact that the image was "mirrored". That was no significant deterent to the guy's identification of Woodenbridge, County Wicklow however.... The wheels fell off the wagon!
Description: Reading the catalogue description of this I thought that it would be like a "Cardall" image, an idealised bit of Paddywhackery but when I looked at the image my reaction was WOW! This is so different, almost Eastern European in its style and there are so many things to wonder at! Will we ever know where it was taken? And, in a way that should no longer surprise me I guess, the "WOW" factored continued. When derangedlemur neatly identified this photo as being taken along the Garron Road, close to Glenariff in County Antrim..... Description: Continuing where we left off on Friday (matters maritime) but this time from the wonderful Clonbrock Collection. This view may not be as iconic as the Skelligs, but nonetheless it provides a pleasing vista with sea, sky, mountains and a safe harbour. Following the tremendous achievement of the Irish Rugby team on Saturday in beating World Champions New Zealand Ireland can bask in the teams reflected glory for a wee while! And indeed it was from the antipodes that good news came again on this photo. With BeachcomberAustralia quickly identifying this as Bray harbour. The date range was refined also, with [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet] pointing us to this Bray Cualann Historical Society webpage which tells us that the lighthouse pictured stood between the late 1890s and 1950s. Hard to starboard
Description: From the far North West we are propelled to the South East to view the good ship SS Fastnet. Mr Poole was a great man for photographing sea going vessels, the date range here is made for “narrowing” though we have found in the past that these ships can have very long lives themselves. And so it was that [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] was able to narrow our 50 year range to just 5. (On the basis that the SS Fastnet had been the SS Monaleen prior to 1918, and was known as SS St Abbs Head after 1923. Putting us firmly in the "1920 plus or minus a few years" range...) Sure it would take me hours to walk over that stuff...
Description: The catalogue description of this image suggests that it is a man standing on a castle, but the benefits of "Super Dooper Mega Zoom" (technical term) show that this is not the case. The man is sitting on a fairly modern building looking out over tidal flats with a town in the background. I suspect that this will take some time to identify but then the Lemur, Sharon or Niall are just as likely to make a liar out of me! Where is it? And, with his first (and critical) hypothesis, John McK has established that this is Bundoran, County Donegal. Thanks John! At last - A dog accompanied by a woman!
Description: 'Painting by Sir John Lavery for Mrs. McEnery, Kilmoganny' is the catalogue title for this shot from the Poole Collection. Featuring a dog allowing itself to be held by a young lady it looks a really lovely portrait. I am no dog expert but it appears to me to be a Pekinese which would have been quite uncommon at that time. Who is the subject and can we date the painting itself? Based on inputs from Niall McAuley, BeachcomberAustralia, and sharon.corbet the general consensus is Sir John Lavery painted this in the 1910s. If so it could well be a portrait of his step-daughter Alice Trudeau (born c.1904), and she later commissioned a copy herself, as Mrs. McEnery. Some time after he marriage to a Jack McEnery in 1930. Seems imminently plausible to us Marys..... Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford Date: Catalogue range c.1901-1954. Sir John Gray all shiny and new
Description: This beautiful shot of Sir John Gray's monument and a pristine Sackville Street, (O'Connell Street) taken in the early morning, The street is clear apart from some hackneys waiting for fares with Nelsons Pillar standing proud and the GPO in all its grandeur unaware of the devastation to come! Apart from connecting the statue, its subject and its inscription to our recent Vartry Works photos, the main learnings here were from Niall McAuley. On date. But the last shall be first and the first shall be last: May the Lord in His mercy be kind to Belfast
Description: A monument to Sir E. J. Harland in Belfast takes us up north of the border (which is in the news) today, and gives me an opportunity to quote from Maurice Craig's wonderful poem. Harland is a name that is synonymous with Belfast - but I confess to know very little about the bearer of that name, can you enlighten me? And so I have learned something - including his apparent like of the odd cigar :) While Edward James Harland is perhaps best known for his shipbuilding activities, his Wikipedia article also lists him as a politician. And he was Mayor and later MP for Belfast for a period. This statue was one of several by Thomas Brock on the grounds of Belfast's city hall. Though in a broad catalogue range (1860s-1910s), this image was likely captured within a few years of the statue's unveiling - in mid-1903..... The ruin and the cross
Description: For most of our old photographs the vegetation will have increased in the area since it was taken but in this case hope and suspect that it has actually reduced. An old overgrown building, in a marshy, reed covered field with a distinctive high cross should be easy to find? Kungsstugan (The King's Cottage), Örebro, Närke, Sweden
Description: The King's Cottage in Örebro, probably built in the 16th century. According to tradition, the future King Karl IX stayed in a guestroom in the building when visiting Örebro in 1580, since Örebro castle was under rebuilding. Primarily, the cottage was used for storing food. (It was moved from its original position in the beginning of the 20th century.) Wash drawing by Olof Sörling, from 1875. Main Street, Longford on a market day
Description: Starting this week with a Lawrence image of Main Street, Longford on a busy market day! I love shots like this with a wealth of detail, lots of people, animals, carts and produce on display. It will be difficult to date this from the evidence on view but we can enjoy all the atmosphere that Mr. French has so beautifully captured. The general concensus on date is that this image was captured after 1901. The rationale being that, while we can see the shop of J&M Farrell (brothers) in this image and the 1911 census return, at the time of the 1901 census, John and Michael Farrell were "serving their time" separately in other retail businesses on the same street. Hence this image surely dates after 1901 - as, at that time, they hadn't yet set up shop together..... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Almost certainly after c.1901 (businesses visible). Description: These unusual water falls in County Longford are today's offering from the Lawrence Collection. Obviously part of a river management system and I imagine an adventure for kayakers if it still exists. I love the wee spout of water coming from the wall on the right, I can just imagine the boy on the dike putting his finger into just such a hole :-) derangedlemur, B-59and Niall McAuley have helped us map this to a spot on the River Camlin. Interestingly, the NIAH entry the guys point us to suggest this was part of a corn mill, while the historic OSI map puts it alongside a saw mill. Whatever the case, while the mills are long gone, the weir itself clearly remains.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Description: The catalogue description of this Eason shot is "Mansion near Gorey, Co. Wexford" and there is a fine house with additional buildings to the rere. For Morning Mary the delightful aspect of it is the two young girls waiting at the front door area to welcome their loved ones home! B-59 was first to identify the front door as that of Levuka House, Courtown, County Wexford. Designed in the 19th century by Thomas Newenham Deane (also designer of our home at Library Towers) and built for the Scott family, it was later associated with the Stopford 'dynasty'. Known by several names over the years (Invermore House, Oulart Hotel, Sands Hotel and Stopford House Hotel), it was apparently demolished relatively recently - making another sad addition to our "No Longer Standing" album.... Boys in uniform
Description: "Group of boys and young men in uniform commissioned by Mr. R. Grubb" is the title of this shot, and we have nine boys with uniform accouterments in shot. it reminds me of a ditty my mother would trot out sometimes along the lines: "We are the Boys Brigade, Dressed up in marmalade, threehapenny tuppeny pill box and a couple of yards of braid!" Is this a Boys Brigade group? Based on the typically insightful inputs on this image, it is confirmed that this is a group from the Church Lad's Brigade, an Anglican youth organisation. In this case almost certainly the Christ Church 'company' in Dublin, pictured outside the namesake cathedral.... Photographer: A. H. Ridgways group when young - and old!
Description: Each morning I have a choice as to which photo to upload and these vary from the sublime to the tragic. Yesterdays shot reminding us of the misery that arose from evictions and other tragedies proved much more educational than we had expected. Today's shot is one that would warm the cockles of your heart. "Ridgways group when young" is the title but there are a couple of adults in there with a Granny looking like a key player in the group! I will enjoy finding out about the Ridgways, have a nice weekend! Based on the description ("Ridgways group when young"), and the census return for the Ridgway family from 1901, the general consensus is that image predates the lower catalogue date range bound. While it could have been a later copy, the suggestion is that this image was probably originally taken c.1890. Perhaps "out the back" of the family home on Newtown Road in Waterford. If correct, according to [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] pictured here are Mary Atkinson (granny/mother-in-law), mother Kathleen, father Richard G. Ridgway, and children (oldest first): Henry, Helena, Mary, George, Joseph, Thomas, Leopold, Gerald and Richenda..... Photographer: A. H. Ignore the camera, pretend to be working!
Description: A rare indoor shot from Dr. Clarke for this one, with two National Library Staff (please note that there are no women) concentrating on their work! I'm not too sure what we can find out about it, but It does show how little has changed in the Reading Room in the interim. To all those who extended kind wishes for my recent surgery I would like to say they were much appreciated! I now have a new knee to keep me occupied and am making progress day by day. Thank you all! As [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] and [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet] point out, it is longstanding lore in Library Towers that this image captures Seán T. O'Kelly. One-time Library Towers employee (1898-1902), and later President of Ireland (1945-1959). While this story/theory has not been corroberated by today's inputs, it equally hasn't been discounted. Miss Grubbs wedding group
Description: For the lasr two years we had wagered (pardon the pun to come) that this was the wedding of Hilda Grubb to Willliam Hill on 29 July 1907, that was until we heard from cookhamish83 a great nephew of William, denying that it was him in this photo and another related photo. As you can see from the older notes below we did have the idea that this may be the wedding of Eva Lucy Grubb, on the occassion of her marriage to Gilbert Southall on 12 April 1900 and having asked a few followere to review the work of 2 years ago we are now sure that it is the Grubb - Southall wedding. Our thanks as always to Bernard Healy sharon.corbet derangedlemur for their help in confirming these corrections. Older description below I always love a good wedding photo and this is one of the best you will find. The date range of 1901 to 1954 should be narrowed very quickly and I do hold out the hope of you getting the exact day correct. I also expect the names of some of the participants to be discovered. The bride has a big job on her hands, it will be difficult to fling that beautifully arranged bouquet over her shoulder! John Spooner, sharon.corbet and Niall McAuley found the critical location, date and subject "evidence" on this one. In short, while this could be Eva Lucy Grubb, on the occassion of her marriage to Gilbert Southall on 12 April 1900, the general consensus is that it is more likely to be a photo of the marriage of her sister Hilda Grubb in 1907. John Spooner provides details of Hilda's marriage to William Hill on 29 July 1907, paraphrasing a report from the Waterford Standard that the:  marriage between William Hill of Belmont Lodge, Waterford and Miss Hilda M Grubb, eldest daughter of Mr J H Grubb of Bruce Villa, Clonmel. The marriage was celebrated at 9 a.m. the previous Monday [29th July] at the Friends' Meeting House, Clonmel. After the wedding breakfast and reception Mr and Mrs William Hill left for Dublin and the Island of Achill, where they intended to spend some weeks. sharon.corbet also provided confirmation that this picture was taken at the Grubb's homestead at Bruce Villa in Clonmel..... Edenvale, Ennis, Co. Clare
Description: Here we are in County Clare. August is always a good time to go to Clare. In fact, any month is a good time to go to County Clare! Eden Vale, a very fancy house. I presume it was either destroyed in the early 1920s or it is now a school or a religious house of some sort. But I may be wrong.... And proved wrong I was. Kind of. After the Stacpoole family vacated their "country seat", this house was not demolished, not converted to a school, nor a convent - but a "tuberculosis sanatorium". Until the mid-20th century at least. It is now (as in, right now) available for purchase. Again. This time to someone with €3.5 million to spend at any rate.... In the long arms of the law!
Description: In this lovely if damaged glass plate, from the Clarke Collection, a member of the Dublin Metropolitan Police appears to have at least one prisoner on their way to the station. In the background some onlookers are watching the action! While there is perhaps a perfectly innocent explanation for what (we think) is captured here, the "snatched" nature of the shot suggests that Clarke was quickly trying to capture something fleeting. And hence that there is something more to this than just three people walking nonchalantly down Eden Quay. Whether with prisoner(s) in tow or not, our resident law-enforcement expert tells is that this peeler (collar number C22) was likely attached to Store Steet station. And likely on his way back there.... Photographers: J. J. Clarke Collection: Clarke Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1897-1904? Lawn, Castlebar, Co. Mayo
Description: A lawn with a DesRes in Castlebar would always be a most attractive proposition and this fine house is no exception! I seem to remember a previous shot from Castlebar with an open area/square in the town with that name? Sharon.corbet and B-59 were quick to confirm that this house is now part of St. Joseph's Secondary School. Prior to that, according to dearbhaile2 and guliolopez, it was associated with the Lords Lucan (yes, those Lords Lucan). And finally, while we had almost diluted our tea with tears of lament for the loss of the OSI historic maps website, Niall McAuley has offered a replacement - which has helped us map this image accurately. As we try to oblige our viewers where possible this is in response to a request by "Jack the Stroller" so here goes! Despite our feeling that this might difficult and "changed utterly", the StreetView found by BeachcomberAustralia and corroberated by sharon.corbet is somewhat recognisable. Tynan Abbey, Co. Armagh
Description: This fine looking building in County Armagh will start our week. It would not look out of place in any of our near British or European neighbours. Does it still stand or has it fallen victim to time and 'progress'? Regrettably, based on today's inputs (including from Fred Dean Snr who points us to the building's Wikipedia entry) we have added this image to our "no longer standing" album. Long associated with the Stronge family, the building was the site of terrible events during the Troubles - in which the then elderly 8th Baronet and his son were killed. The building we see here was burned down in the same event, and demolished the following decade. Only the arch of the frontdoor remains..... One man and his gun
Description: One with very few clues today to end the week and what looks like an early Stereo Pairs shot. A man on his own standing on a stone jetty with a heavy cannon gun beside him. In the background is a conical bare hill/mountain. What I would really like to know today is what was the gun called? Based in no small part on inputs (and a corroberating photo) from mcginley2012 it is confirmed that this cannon is on the lake shore of Ballynahinch Lake in County Galway. William Robert Caldbeck RIP
Description: Nothing as exciting or as lively as Dad and Sean Lemass in this shot from Mr. Poole. A gravestone of William Robert Caldbeck who died in early middle age in a well kept grave somewhere. Who was William and where was he buried? With thanks to sharon.corbet, mcginley2012, and Niall McAuley we have answers to the key questions here. On the "where", it is confirmed that William Robert Caldbeck's gravestone is in Guilcagh Cemetery, about 2 miles south of Portlaw. On the "who", William himself was postmaster and shopkeeper in Portlaw, County Waterford, and was clearly much loved by his friends in the area - as they erected a fountain in his memory and which still stands in the town. On the "when", as the grave and gravestone look especially fresh, it seems likely that this dates from quite early in the proposed catalogue range.... Photographer: A. H. Bringing light into darkness
Description: Standing proud and distinctive on Wicklow Head the lighthouse was an essential beacon for the many ships sailing along the Irish Sea. Our great hope is that we can get a little more information on it than we did on the Emmetts Cricket Club from Skerries? With thanks in particular to sharon.corbet, Niall McAuley and BeachcomberAustralia we learned that there are actually a number of lighthouses on Wicklow Head. This quick flyover video shows their relative positions. One of the earliest examples, the "Rear Lighthouse" is "behind" the photographer here, further inland, and was built in 1781 and is now a holiday rental operated the the Irish Landmark Trust. The most recent, somewhat over the "hump" we see here and closer to the water, was built in the 19th century and is still active and operated by the Commissioners of Irish Lights. The one pictured here, effectively between the other two, dates from the 18th century, but is apparently seen here after some 19th century developments. The "outbuildings" are no longer standing - though the tower itself remains.... On the beach
Description: A scene from a beach, apparently in Achill, where the locals are gathered with tins, buckets, boats and nets. What is really unusual and demands some explanation is the man inspecting the nets while holding a gun? (Incidentally this is the first time I can recall uploading an "Imperial" sized image to this stream. I shall have to study it carefully to see the difference such a significant size will make.) We are on Dooagh Beach, thanks Niall McAuley I think we can understand that the peopel we see had a hard existence, it is nice to see some of them playfully pose for the camera. BeachcomberAustralia provides a piece from the magnificent Trove website curated by our friends from The National Library of Australia where we see Michael Davitt pleading for the building of Piers and Harbours for the fishermen in the area, Davitt argues that at little expense the construction would save uncounted lives and increase fishing productivity. Description: The "Makalös" ("Peerless") Palace, built in 1635-1643 for the noble family De la Gardie, in Kungsträdgården (King's Garden) park in central Stockholm. The palace was in the 18th century used as arsenal, and from the 1790s as location for the Royal Dramatic Theatre. It was destroyed by a fire in 1825, during a theatre performance. Valbret's grave, Tanum, Bohuslän, Sweden
Description: Grave field with stone circle and cist grave in Tanum on the Swedish west coast. The grave is called "Valbret's grave". The grave, however, is from the Stone Age, and rather about 4,000 years old. Watercolour by Olof Hermelin, from the later part of the 19th century.
