Understated elegance from Plumstead
Description: For a Monday morning with the lockdowns easing it is nice to celebrate, and what better way to do so than with a small wedding image. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. Happy Hatoriffic(ish) weekend to you all.
Description: A group of three, two ladies with fine hats on board. And a gentleman sitting down while the ladies stand? Miss Nolan of Brownswood, Carrick-on-Suir was the lady who made the commission, but is she in the image, and what was the occasion? +++ UPDATE +++ Looks as if this one will have to simmer on the back burner for a while. No Brownswood Nolans in either the 1901 or 1911 censuseses. And Evening Mary could find nothing in any online newspapers. We shall sit back (if we can get a chance to sit down with these young feller-me-lads hogging all the seating) and await developments... Photographer: A. H. When the dark cow leaves the moor
Description: Thomas MacDonagh and friend in a really pleasant, casual portrait. One thing we can be sure of is that this was taken no later than 1916, and as MacDonagh is mature, probably some time after 1900. Who is his friend, and what can we find out about this photograph? Comrades in arms sharing the pain.
Description: “Injured soldier being cared for by the Red Cross on the South Western Front during the Irish Civil War”! A long title for a photograph that tells a tale from 98 years ago somewhere in Munster. The wounded man appears to be in considerable pain and is being held and comforted by his friend and colleague. Two things that stand out for me are the makeshift Red Cross armbands on the two medics, and the old-fashioned kit bag seemingly holding their first aid supplies! Photographer: W. D. The bivalve speculum (Fig. 90-a) is the kind most fre-quently used in ordinary office work. It consists of two blades, which are intro-duced closed and then opened by a mechanism at the handle. The vaginal wallsare thus held apart (Fig. 91) and a very good view of the walls and cervix may beobtained. The bivalve speculum is convenient and gives good exposure of thecervix in most cases. There are many different modifications of the blades and also of the mechanismfor separating the blades. The most satisfactory form that I have found is shownin the illustration. It is called the Graves speculum and has the advantage thatit can be easily and quickly transformed into a fairly satisfactory Sims speculum, Text Appearing After Image: Fig. 90. Instruments for the regular speculum examination, a. Bivalve Speculum, of which it is wellto have three sizes — large, medium and small, b. Dressing Forceps for swabbing out vagina, c. Tena-culum-forceps for catching cervix to bring it well into view. b. Specimen Scissors, a small strong hawk-billscissors for clipping small specimens from the cervix in suspicious cases. which is a decided convenience in office work. Three sizes are useful—small(virgin), medium and large. The cervix is easier exposed in most cases if the an-terior blade of the speculum is somewhat shorter than the posterior. Some specula are made with three blades, instead of two, constituting a tri-valve speculum. They are made on the same general principles as the bivalvebut the mechanism is more complicated and, usually, without correspondingbenefit. The bivalve speculum is used with the patient in the dorsal posture (Fig. 41).For sterihzation of specula and other instruments, see Preparations for Exami Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

Some were removed, it is true, though after long delay; and passengers on the Alameda County ferrieswere amazed one morning to see the classic Ohio Building gliding down theBay on a raft, to become a club in the San Mateo County marshes—thestrangest craft seen on these waters since Ayala sailed the Toison de Orothrough the Heads. The Wisconsin Building, the Virginia Building, and oneor two more went across the Bay in the other direction to become a part ofSanta Venetia, in Marin County. Fortunately the Presidio lease from theGovernment, on which the foreign and State section had been built, did notexpire until April, 1917. Most of the buildings were auctioned ultimately, and the wrecking proceeded under the rules. They did not bring much.It was intended to give the Chinese and the Siamese Pavilions to the city, but at this writing the city has not taken either of them. The Oregon Building remained inthe Presidio as a club house for soldiers. It was not until March, 1917,that the dome of the Argentine Pavilion was felled. Clearing the Zone took longer than emptying the palaces, and was far morecomplicated, as all accounts with the Exposition had to be settledbefore anything could be done, and some were slow; but the last z evestige of the great amusement street had vanished and the 97pieces of realty on which it was built were ready for release to their ownersby June 30, 1916. The buildings were generally sold to wrecking con-tractors, an arrangement that was made to work to the advantage of theExposition, because in the transfer of obligations from owner to contractorwhere was an opportunity to re-define the conditions of the work.
