Rainy days and Sundays always get me down
Description: On a wet and pretty miserable day in Dublin, and most of the North and East of the country, O'Dea takes us down South to a rainy day long ago. A man in a Mac (that was a Mackintosh raincoat long before Apple) passes a lady in a very old-fashioned cloak on a street in Bandon, County Cork. Photographer: James P. They're Peelers not Sojers
Description: Mr. John A. Costello looks decidedly discombobulated as he is escorted by Church and State to some event in Donegal. The title suggests that he has a guard of honour of soldiers, but those are actually some of An Garda Síochána's finest. Their uniform, with the closed collars, should be some guide to the latest date this could have been taken? Where, why and what? Amazing Grace – with a bit of dodge and burn?
Description: A lovely, happy wedding group this morning from the Poole Photographic Collection. Commissioned by Mr. H. A. Grace of 108 Ballyruckle (Ballytruckle?), Waterford. There appears to have been quite a bit of manipulation of the image to improve or otherwise alter it! +++ UPDATE +++ Gorgeous information on this lovely wedding photo. We knew that Mr Grace of 108 Ballytruckle, Waterford ordered it, and that it was taken on 18 August 1943. Thanks be to all the digitised family history records now available, we got to vigorously ring our People Identified bell. This photograph marked the wedding of Edward Grace and Ellen Angela Power, who got married on Wednesday, 18 August 1943 in St. John's church, Waterford. Edward Grace was a fitter of 42 Lower Yellow Road. We have no occupation for Ellen Angela Power, but she lived at 108 Ballytruckle, Waterford. The witnesses were William Grace (left of groom) and Josephine Power (right of bride). Photographer: A. H. The end of the line...
Description: Cavan might be the last place you would want to end up for Christmas, but that is only if you didn't know the many attractions of the town! A lovely shot from Mr. O'Dea of the railway station in Cavan with a full stop, which is what we will be doing until after the Christmas. On behalf of all at the NLI and from the Marys, we would like to wish all our many followers and contributors a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year. For those who do not celebrate Christmas we wish you the compliments of the season. Just to remind us that the season is made of children's memories here are the final lines from a poem by Patrick Kavanagh: I was six Christmases of age My father played the melodeon, My mother milked the cows, And I had a prayer like a white rose pinned, On the Virgin Mary's blouse. Photographer: James P. When the dark cow leaves the moor
Description: Thomas MacDonagh and friend in a really pleasant, casual portrait. One thing we can be sure of is that this was taken no later than 1916, and as MacDonagh is mature, probably some time after 1900. Who is his friend, and what can we find out about this photograph? Comrades in arms sharing the pain.
Description: “Injured soldier being cared for by the Red Cross on the South Western Front during the Irish Civil War”! A long title for a photograph that tells a tale from 98 years ago somewhere in Munster. The wounded man appears to be in considerable pain and is being held and comforted by his friend and colleague. Two things that stand out for me are the makeshift Red Cross armbands on the two medics, and the old-fashioned kit bag seemingly holding their first aid supplies! Photographer: W. D. A fine set of fetlocks!
Description: Captain W.J. Baird, Aide de Camp to the Lord Lieutenant sits astride a really fine looking horse in this carefully posed image from the Poole Collection. Now we know the name of the soldier so now we want to know is the name of the horse??? +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks everyone, for confirmation that Captain James Baird was aide-de-camp to Lord Wimborne, Lord Lieutentant in Ireland, and that he was in that post in 1917 (newspaper reports). O Mac suggests Busoni as the horse's name, but we'd need some hard evidence. We're a tough crowd. Oh, and we always love to see John Spooner waxing lyrical about movable boudoirs! Photographer: A. H. The Sugar Loaf? Hardly!
Description: For those Irish followers and especially those inside the Pale, there is only one Sugar Loaf, and that is beside Dublin Bay in Co. Wicklow. However, down on the Cork/Kerry border they claim to have their own Sugar Loaf! Viewed as this one is from Glengarriff, it is like a jewel in a crown. +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks to beachcomber australia for narrowing the date from a broad 1865-1914, down to early 1890s. This is all based on an entertaining, but fairly scientific, examination of fancy benches, height of fir trees, Library of Congress images, top hats, and poor paint jobs. Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Circa 1865-1914 – see comments, probably early 1890s NLI Ref: L_CAB_01390 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie
