Mrs Farmer is not dressed for farming
Description: Having discovered who now lives behind the blue door on the Milltown Road, we now discover that Mrs Farmer from Clonmel was an elegant lady. If she was the wife of a farmer named Farmer, then she did not farm in that elegant outfit! +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks to Sharon Corbet for revealing at lot more about “Mrs Farmer”. Mary Constance Farmer (née Barry) was married to retired Captain Langford Llanwarne Farmer. They had married in Kanturk in 1903, and had two sons Arthur and Frank. Mary was aged around 40 in this photograph. And speaking of “revealing”, if you read down through the comments, you may be discombobulated by the discussion of knickers. To see why, zoom in on the catalogue Mary Farmer is perusing... Photographer: A. H. Lean, mean and bowler hatted
Description: This fine group of sportsmen taken by Mr. Poole is a bit of a puzzle. If they were oarsmen, there would surely be an oar or two on display. Fooballers would have a ball or two to play with. Hurlers would have hurleys, but these lads have what looks like a telescope? Who were they? I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls
Description: This is allegedly a bust of Denis Florence MacCarthy. Now I suspect that many of us plebs never heard of this gentleman, so one wonders who was he to be preserved for all time in marble? It is a fine-looking sculpture with excellent detail, so this is a particularly singular honour for Denis. Google search on the way!!!! +++ UPDATE +++ No idea why our catalogue record had a question mark after Bust of Denis Florence MacCarthy? as it quite clearly states what it is on the tin, or in this case, marble plinth. Thanks to Suck Diesel for the list of the great and good of Irish society in 1882, who came together to contribute to a memorial fund to perpetuate “in a fitting manner the memory of this distinguished Irish poet”. We’re assuming this bust was the outcome of that fund? And we now know that Mr MacCarthy (1817-1882) was an Irish poet, translator, and biographer, born in Sackville Street Lower (now O’Connell Street), Dublin. John Tyndall, half-length portrait, facing front
Description: This image of John Tyndall has so much information contained within regarding sartorial, tonsorial and “barborial”, all denoting the fashions of a time! Who was John Tyndall? Did he write songs as well, or was he a wielder of the sword rather than the pen? +++ UPDATE +++ Turns out he was more of a wielder of the mind, rather than sword or pen. There was some initial argument as to whether this was, in fact, John Tyndall – based on hair parting, facial features, facial hair, apparent age in various portraits, and the name J. Glastrich on the carte-de-visite itself. However, the consensus is that this is indeed physicist John Tyndall, professor of physics at London’s Royal Institution from 1853 to 1887. He was a very interesting fellow. Domhnall Sioradáin provided us with a succinct biography: Tyndall, from Leighlinbridge, Carlow, is remembered in Cork, in the Tyndall National Institute. He left Carlow at 18 to work for the Ordnance Survey around Munster, before moving to Preston. He is noted for his explanation of why the sky is blue (Rayleigh scattering), heat absorption by CO2 in the atmosphere, and the measurement of aerosols by scattering (Tyndall effect). Description: John Keegan Casey, or as the police would say, John Keegan alias Leo Casey, in a very old and faded photograph for today’s image. A big change from the wide and crowded street of Kingscourt to the clouded and tragic world of the Fenian Brotherhood. What can we find out about John, and what happened to him? +++ UPDATE +++ Thank you to everyone for the great information contributed about John Keegan Casey, who we found out was a poet, a teacher, a scholar, and a Fenian. BeachcomberAustralia found a great article in the Irish Times although he says it’s "hopefully reliable”. How very dare you? That’s the ‘paper of record’ you’re casting asparagus at! :)) Anyway, among many gems in that article by Denis Fahey was this interesting little nugget: “His coffin was draped in silk banners of green white and orange, the first recorded use of a tricolour for this purpose, and thousands of people marched in a procession from his home to Glasnevin Cemetery.” Photographers: Various Collection: Irish Political Figures Photographic Collection Date: ca. 1850-1870 NLI Ref: NPA PERS3 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Les Corvettes L'Astrolabe Et La Zelee caught in Antarctic ice, watercolour by A. Mayer. (1838)
Description: This watercolour painted by A. Mayer is of the Astrolabe and Zélée caught in Antarctic ice in 1838. The ships were on Jules Dumont d'Urville's Second Voyage of exploration which had left Toulon on 7 September 1837. One of their main objecttives was to discover the South Magnetic Pole but on 1 January 1838, two weeks after sighting their first iceberg, the ships became entangled in a mass of ice. Over the next two months d'Urville led increasingly desperate attempts to find a passage through the ice so that he could reach the desired latitude. d'Urville was eventually forced to give up the search and directed the two ships towards Talcahuano, in Chile, where he established a temporary hospital for the crew members affected by scurvy. Happy at his work!
Description: This Harry Crosby may not have the money or fame of his current namesake but he looks like a man who is content with his lot. A portrait from the lens of Mr. O'Dea this morning from the signal cabin in Sallins, County Kildare. Full of levers, switches and buttons the signal cabin was not for the faint hearted - except on the West Clare Railway:-) I love the brush handle being used to hang the cap:-) Photographer: James P. Constructing a wall? I think not!
Description: Some townie in Library Towers thought that these men were building a wall at the foot of Mount Errigal! Sure God help them they never spent a day on the bog footing turf. This really gorgeous Tynan image shows one of the real beauties of Donegal while also showing a dying art, the cutting, drying and gathering of turf (peat to the forringers among us) from the bog! The mill wheel keeps on turning...
Description: The archivist trying to describe this image provided an elaborate title "River, rocky bed, between wooded banks, weir seen from dumstream, mill wheel mill, outflow to left" I await an explanation for "Dumstream" and a virtual sticky bun for the best version! The scene is wide and sylvan with an enormous mill building, probably a tidal river below the falls and a verdant river bank. Where is/was it? Amy Sheridan, as Lady Godiva, c. 1873, photographer unknown
Description: In 1872 Miss Amy Sheridan's performance of Lady Godiva by W. M. Akhurst for Astley's circus created a furor among the respectable society when she appeared as Lady Godiva dressed in what for the time was deemed virtually nothing. Described as "a sight to drive the mosquitoes mad" photographs of the Amy were deemed pornographic by many but still sold in large numbers in Australia. Miss Amy Sheridan, Ias Lady Godiva, item 03: Photographs of actors and actresses, singers, music hall artists, and others, ca. 1863-ca. 1881, State Library of New South Wales PXA 362/vol. 3 p.8, archival.sl.nsw.gov.au/Details/archive/110336651

Description: Tom with Trout is the title on this Clonbrock photo with a man holding two enormous fish while standing on a lawn. Unidentified but it looks like Wicklow?
Description: Somehow this reminds me of a number of places in County Wicklow. The ridge, the trees and the houses in close proximity to water. The one thing that throws me is the broad expanse of possibly tidal waters in the foreground. I wonder why those stakes are placed at the end of the falling water? Fish traps perhaps?
