The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. Smiles all round for a good beginning!
Description: A lovely smiley wedding group from Mr. Poole to start the week on a positive note! The happy couple, the witnesses, and the clergy all have broad smiles, while the bride has a firm hold on her man. Ordered by Mr. Richard Siggins of 28 The Glen in Waterford. What can we find out about them? +++ UPDATE +++ We found out ridiculously fabulous information about them, and much of the heavy lifting was done by Bernard Healy! Meet engine driver Richard Siggins and Emily Cozens, both of 28 The Glen, Waterford. They got married in the Cathedral in Waterford on 23 October 1944, and their witnesses were William Siggins and Mary Josephine Cozens. The presiding priest was Fr. Comrades in arms sharing the pain.
Description: “Injured soldier being cared for by the Red Cross on the South Western Front during the Irish Civil War”! A long title for a photograph that tells a tale from 98 years ago somewhere in Munster. The wounded man appears to be in considerable pain and is being held and comforted by his friend and colleague. Two things that stand out for me are the makeshift Red Cross armbands on the two medics, and the old-fashioned kit bag seemingly holding their first aid supplies! Photographer: W. D. Amazing Grace – with a bit of dodge and burn?
Description: A lovely, happy wedding group this morning from the Poole Photographic Collection. Commissioned by Mr. H. A. Grace of 108 Ballyruckle (Ballytruckle?), Waterford. There appears to have been quite a bit of manipulation of the image to improve or otherwise alter it! +++ UPDATE +++ Gorgeous information on this lovely wedding photo. We knew that Mr Grace of 108 Ballytruckle, Waterford ordered it, and that it was taken on 18 August 1943. Thanks be to all the digitised family history records now available, we got to vigorously ring our People Identified bell. This photograph marked the wedding of Edward Grace and Ellen Angela Power, who got married on Wednesday, 18 August 1943 in St. John's church, Waterford. Edward Grace was a fitter of 42 Lower Yellow Road. We have no occupation for Ellen Angela Power, but she lived at 108 Ballytruckle, Waterford. The witnesses were William Grace (left of groom) and Josephine Power (right of bride). Photographer: A. H. On the Moslems side the loss was moreby flight than slaughter. The Diyar-Bekr contingenthad vanished ; but of the rest, only the leader of theKurds and one other emir were recorded as killed, with about 150 undistinguished warriors. Panic willaccount for a good deal, but the disproportion ofthese estimates is inartistic. The Christian estimateof the Moslem loss at 1500 horsemen is more con-sistent with the accounts of the battle. * Ibn-el-Athir, ii., 13. f He says the man in charge of the dead-carts counted 4100 oddbodies from the left wing alone of the Franks. Imad-ed-din reckonedthe total Christian loss at 10,000 (Goergens, 124), but round figuresare to be distrusted. Text Appearing After Image: Ill > CHAPTER XVII. THE SIEGE OF ACRE.1189-91.
