This is happen-ing even though many municipali-ties have at their disposal a varietyof transportation resources which, except for a few hours a day, aregrossly underutilized—again, a piti-ful waste of taxpayer resources. The title suggests that he has a guard of honour of soldiers, but those are actually some of An Garda Síochána's finest. Comrades in arms sharing the pain.
Description: “Injured soldier being cared for by the Red Cross on the South Western Front during the Irish Civil War”! A long title for a photograph that tells a tale from 98 years ago somewhere in Munster. The wounded man appears to be in considerable pain and is being held and comforted by his friend and colleague. Two things that stand out for me are the makeshift Red Cross armbands on the two medics, and the old-fashioned kit bag seemingly holding their first aid supplies! Photographer: W. D. Description: For the Grandparents, or even Great Grandparents that posed with their enormous clan, this must have been a very proud moment? What a wonderful collection of women, men, and children, all scrubbed up and looking very happy. I am really looking forward to meeting the Dowleys, and discovering all about them! Photographer: A. Text Appearing Before Image: ter year theunion, alwaj^s distasteful to the independent,proud-spirited Norwegians, was dissolved. The people of Norway are universally re-si^ected for their honesty, thrift and love ofdemocratic institutions. Location and Size. Norway occupies thewestern part of the Scandinavian peninsula, lying adjacent to Sweden, Finland (includ-ing Lapland) and the Russian goverament ofArchangel. Its eastern frontier, which isabout 1,500 miles in extent, follows the Swed-ish boundary for about 950 miles. Norway, extending 300 miles into the Arctic Zone, isa part of the Land of the Midnight Sun,and its extreme northern tip, Cape Nordkyn,is the northernmost point of the Europeanmainland. The Arctic Ocean washes thenorthern coast, the Atlantic and the NorthSea the western. At the south is the Skager-rak, separating Jutland from Norway andconnecting the Cattegat and the North Sea.The counti-y has an area of about 124,643square miles, a little greater than that ofNew Mexico, and about three times that of Text Appearing After Image: NORWAY 2609 NORWAY Ohio. Sweden is tlie larger by over 48,000square miles. People and Cities. The Norwegians ex-hibit two racial strains, rejDresented by atall, blond Teutonic type, and a shorter, darker one. The fonner predominates. Typical Norwegians are tall, well built andathletic. They nearly all have fair skin, blueeyes and light hair in childhood, but the ten-dency is to grow darker in maturity. Inactivities that call for physical courage andendurance these people have always beenconspicuous, and we find Norway well rep-resented in the annals of polar exj^loration. No people on the globe command greaterrespect than the natives of this far northernland. In 1910 the population of the country was2,392,698. These figures show a slight de-crease from the statistics for 1900, but Nor-way has lost more people through emigra-tion than any other European country ex-cept Ireland. The great majority of Nor-wegian emigrants have settled in the nortb-westera part of the United States, whereth Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.
