Scholars captured by the dreaded attendance officer!
Description: The dreaded School Attendance (aka Truancy) Officer was the terror of all those who might be tempted to mitch from school in years gone by. In this interesting Mason image, titled in the catalogue as "'Mitchers', four young boys, different ages, with school attendance officer and bicycle", we see a clergyman who appears to have captured a handful of young scamps. They are undoubtedly from different social circumstances : two with bare feet, two with shoes/boots, all with headgear and the big fella with a smug smile! Did they all get six of the best? The general consensus is that this image (or perhaps just its title) could be at least partially "staged". The Irish Education Act 1892, for the first time, made it compulsory for children children aged between 6 and 14 to attend school. Captured within a decade or so of that act, it seems plausible this image was used to "illustrate" the change in approach. Certainly only one of the lads looks even slightly bothered at being "caught". And, unless the chap at the back is some kind of prefect or enforcer, he seems an unlikely type :) While we have not yet established a location for this image, sissonni suggests that the successing Mason image [M56/8] was captured at the same place and time... Orion on the Moon
Description: Astronaut John W. Young, commander of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission, works at the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) just prior to deployment of the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) during the first extravehicular activity (EVA-1) on April 21, 1972. Note the Ultraviolet (UV) Camera/Spectrometer to the right of the Lunar Module (LM) ladder. Also, note the pile of protective/thermal foil under the U.S. flag on the LM which the astronauts pulled away to get to the Modular Equipment Storage Assembly (MESA) bay. While astronauts Young and Charles M. Duke Jr., lunar module pilot; descended in the Apollo 16 LM “Orion” to explore the Descartes highlands landing site on the Moon, astronaut Thomas K. Mattingly II, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) “Casper” in lunar orbit. Image Number: AS16-116-18578 Date: April 21, 1972

Bridging the gap
Description: The original title on this Hogan-Wilson image is "Bridge blown up - Unidentified location" and I suspect that it will not be easily identified today? No posters, doubtful 'Streetview' availability and few other clues so we will probably be down to newspaper articles? It is a pity that the shot is not sharper as any clues that might be there are dulled! While the image seems to date from the middle of the War of Independence (1919-1921), our intrepid contributors highlight the lack of debris in the picture - suggesting the image was taken some time after its destruction. While this might help eliminate any acts of sabotage from later in the conflict, [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] tells us that there were many hundreds of such events on railway bridges alone. Making date an unlikely 'clue' to identify a location. The topography and make-up of the bridge however have suggested some possible leads..... Photographer: W. D. Runner in long underwear, Australia, c.1870, American & Australasian (A&A) Photographic Company, from quarter plate glass photonegative, State Library of New South Wales, ON 4 Box 21 No 565
Description: Around 1870 the A&A photo company took a studio portrait of this athlete in his running costume and shoes. While we have no definitive proof, it is possible that this is a picture of A. E. Bird who raced against E. Ford amateur champion runner of Victoria. The image is from around the time this event took place and the runner is wearing what looks like an English rose, suggesting it may be Bird. We would welcome any further information which we could use to verify whether this is in fact his portrait. Further reading: The Great Three-Mile Race. (1870, November 15). Civic Guards Wexford, group
Description: This early photograph of the Irish Police (while they were still known as the Civic Guards) shows a police service in its infancy. Two officers, three sergeants and the remaining "Guards" make up the station party of what would appear to be Wexford Town. But is that the case? And the consensus is that it probably *is* the case - with a strong possibility that this image was captured outside the barracks in Wexford town... Photographer: A. H. I.S. Varian & Co., brushmakers. North Dublin
Description: To finish off the week we make a visit to the Mason Collection. What a great variety of brushes, I wonder can we identify all the different uses? In the 1911 Census there are 337 people with "brush" as part of the description of their occupation. These included: Brush Maker, Brush Finisher, Brush Drawer, Brush Trade, Brush Manufacturer, Brush Washer, Brush Merchant, Brush Borer and Brush Traveler. While I'm not sure what a "Brush Traveler" may have done, does the "St Louis - 1904" signage suggest that these particular brushes went on a journey? This particular Mary must admit to knowing nothing of I.S Varian & Co, brushmakers - before today's researches that is. Particularly striking is the longevity of the business. First founded in Cork in 1798, the company was based from Dublin's Talbot Street since 1856 - and still operating from Walkinstown into the 21st century. They had upwards of 360 employees in the 1940s - some of whom continued an interesting employee renunion tradition on unique dates (4/4/1944, 5/5/1955, etc) - until recent decades. The other interesting thing (clearly) about the business were the displays of their wares. Including their display at the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair. Given the mention of St Louis and 1904 in this particular display, it seems likely that (though probably not from the St Louis exhibition), our image dates from after this time. Perhaps 1904 - plus a few years... Collection: Mason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1890-1910. Likely after c.1904.
