Hugging and a kissing in the back row of the movies
Description: From the Wild West of Ireland yesterday, well Mayo at any rate, to Hollywood's version of the Wild West today. This passionate publicity shot is from Cimarron (1931), starring Irene Dunne and Richard Dix. It’s part of our Sheehy Skeffington Photographic Collection. We’d love to know more about this fillum. And we wonder why this photo and other Cimarron shots and stills were of interest to Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington. Drawing (allegedly), unidentified building (definitely).
Description: Back on terra firma today, but we don't know where this building, described in our catalogue as "Drawing, unidentified building" was (or maybe still is). In Ireland or 'out foreign'? While everyone agrees that this is definitely not in Ireland, and very likely somewhere on the continent (France, Germany, or bordering countries), the precise location seems to evade us. Which is surprising in itself :) Have we finally stumped the unstumpable? Collection: Mason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1890-1910. A bit early for Bloomsday?
Description: Bloomsday 16 June 1954, has been illustrated before by the Wiltshire Collection, but this shot was taken indoors with two named personalities. The significance of Con Leventhal and Michael Scott escapes me. But I am sure the many Joyce scholars out there can enlighten me... The general consensus is that this image captures Abraham "Con" Levanthal (academic and literary critic), Michael John Scott (architect and one-time Abbey actor) and Patricia Scott (TCD grad and wife of Scott). All of whom would have been very familiar with Joyce's works and the art world in Dublin in general.... King George VI visits Dundalk
Description: O'Dea has created such a wonderful record of the transition from steam to diesel and the closure of stations. This magnificent shot of a visit by a beautiful locomotive must have been a mouth watering occasion for him and all railway enthusiasts? And, indeed, whether foaming at the mouth our otherwise, our own railway enthusiasts have identified this "2-6-0" loco as No 99 (class W) "King George VI”, of the Northern Counties (NCC) railway company. According to this Wikipedia article, there were 15 of these locos in use in Ireland. Most with colorful names :) Photographer: James P. O'Dea Collection:James P. Description: This is a very unusual image and clearly one that was used to identify police and military figures for future reference. Belfast: 'Evolution of Lighting: Ireland'. Gas Works, mechanical stoker and drawer
Description: Advances in science and technology to start this week with public lighting evolving in Belfast. After the eons during which lighting was by candle or taper moving over to gas lighting must have seemed to be a revolutionary advance? Whether an incremental or exponential advance, this mechanical stoker device must have allowed a LOT more coke and coal to be fed and maintained in these numerous furnaces. While it must've put at least a few chaps out of work, one imagines their lungs (and backs) were better off at least...... Photographer: Thomas H. We all want a white wedding
Description: A wedding group taken by Mr. Poole for Mrs. O'Connor which shows his great skills and careful arrangement of the subjects. As near a symmetrical arrangement as he could manage with the placement of the personnel makes a very pleasing group and a fine photograph. The prevailing wisdom is that this image captures the marriage of Thomas O'Connor and Evelyn Erlwin on 16 October 1912. While the group may not have been in Grannagh at the time, there seems to be a connection to the village (also known as Granny) which sits close to the county boundary between Waterford and Kilkenny. (ed. As the O'Connor/Erlwin wedding was at least partly celebrated in nearby Kilmacow, Niall McAuley suggests that this image may have been captured there)..... Photographer: A. H. Portrait of a lady
Description: The blessing of the Clonbrock Collection is that it gives us insights into a very privileged aspect of Irish society at a time of change. The wealth, the opulence, the comfort were contrary to the everyday experience of the majority of the population, yet these were people who took an active part in Irish life within their own milieu. Today's image of a room crowded with fine furniture and featuring the portrait of a beautiful young woman can wing us back to that era that is now, sadly, gone! First Envoy to the Irish Republic in London : Art Ó Bríain 1919-1924, with members of the staff.
Description: We have had the pleasure of meeting Art Ó'Brían before but in top hat and tails! Here he is in less formal attire with the staff who supported him in his role. It would be really interesting to find out who those people were and perhaps what became of them? With thanks to our contributors, and in particular our own Carol Maddock, it seems that this image is described in that recent tome the 'Atlas of the Irish Revolution'. It describes this as an image of Art Ó Briain's embassy staff, specifically:  "(front, L to R): Liam Moore, Fintan Murphy, Ó Briain, C.B. Dutton; (back, L to R): Seán Molloy, Maeve O'Brien, Paddy Codyre. In March 1919 Ó Briain was officially appointed Dáil Éireann envoy to Great Britain. His bureau located off the Strand (City of Westminster) employed a small 'embassy' staff [..] Significant international relations were developed. Between 1919 and 1920 Ó Briain met with and advised Saad Zaghloul, the Egyptian revolutionary and statesman, in the latter's negotiations with the British government. He also became a close associate of the Indian nationalist and communist Shapurji Saklatvala. Ó Briain also collaborated with Scottish National League leaders William Gillies and Ruaraidh Erskine of Marr...." History in the making
Description: History in the making as a twin engined string bag named Goliath took to the air almost exactly 100 years ago. As the caption in the catalogue says "The Farmouth 'Goliath' airborne"! What we take for granted today was weird and wonderful then, and after the first World War the developments in aviation were phenomenal! What was the story behind Mr. Mason's card of this particular feat? Based on today's inputs, it seems there is an error in this catalogue entry, and that this is the Farman (not Farmouth) Goliath. Seemingly several large WWI bombers of the Avions Farman company were repurposed for passenger travel post the Great War. Given that this image (with exactly this framing) appears in a souvenir brochure of the company, it's possible that Mr. Mason was just taken by the image - or was taken (somewhere) by the aircraft itself.... Selfie?
Description: A strange one today from the Mason Collection. It is obviously a type of "selfie" of our Mr Mason. I wonder what the headline "Zoo's" New Arrival refers to? Our catalogue date is ca. 1890-1910 which is obviously wrong! As with our other recent Mason photo (in which the text didn't match the photo), it seems that we may have the same thing here. Perhaps Mr. Mason just liked the "joke" of his image being associated with another headline :) While the headline above deals with an unrelated (though interesting) story from July 1933, the caption below (and Carol Maddock) confirm that this image was taken during a lecture on "Archaeology in Ireland", at a meeting of the Dublin Rotary Club, in the Metropole Restaurant (O'Connell Street) on 3 July 1933. Apparently he covered the growth in finds of bronze age artefacts with the draining of bogs and cutting of turf which was becoming more industrialised at the time (the Turf Development Board, precursor to Bord na Móna, was formed in the same year)... Description: We start the week with this bonkers, but rather glorious ad for Bronco Toilet Paper, from a time when advertising copywriters were more robust in their approach! B-59 has found a version of this ad "in situ" in a 1935 issue of Radio Stars magazine This would seem to suggest the 1930s as a plausible date/range for this cloacopapyrological image....
