But while in course of construction the plan ofthe upper hall was changed, and built so as to makeit available for school purposes. This was the firsthome of the Baron de Hirsch Agricultural School. During the preparatory period of the school (Marchto October, 1894) forty-two pupils were registered. The Woodbine farmers sent their sons, and so didAlliance, Carmel, Rosenheim—the neighboring SouthJersey colonies—and Jewish farmers all over the coun-try. The first students could not receive a systematiccourse of lectures, as the school was not yet fullyorganized, but they were given practical instruction inthe planting, grafting and care of fruit trees and inthe growing of garden truck and field crops. Mean-while the Model Farm did much to advance the knowl-edge of the farmers in general, to whom the country, soil and climate conditions were unknown when they Text Appearing After Image: BRINGING SCIENCE TO FARMERS 115 came from their ghettos—whether in the cities of theold world or New York or Philadelphia. It may be interesting to mention here, as an exampleof my husbands care for the individual students aswell as the general welfare of all collectively, the caseof two young boys, the sons of Woodbine farmers. They were unusually bright and intelligent and herealized that all they needed was a chance. He sawin them good teachers and future farm-inspectors, whowould be all the more useful because they spoke thelanguage of the Jewish farmers. He did not purposeto keep them waiting until the Agricultural Schoolshould grow up to their needs. He devised, therefore,a plan for their training and the Fund gave him per-mission to carry it out. Shortly after peace had been made with the farmers,he called the two boys in one day, and asked themwhether they would like to go to college. It was, ineffect, the same as asking them whether they wouldlike to live in bright sunshine Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

Reproduction occurs in Pandorina by zoogonidia which are preciselysimilar to the mature cells of Chlamydomonas (Dangeard, 00). They ariseby the longitudinal division of the contents of the mother-cell, and each onesecretes in addition to its own membrane a mucous outer coat whichultimately forms the common investment of the colony. Schroder (98) alsoobserved zoogonidia in Pandorina, and states that they lose their cilia, vacuoles, and pigment-spot before dividing to form a new colony. Gamogenetic reproduction has been observed in all the genera exceptPlatydorina and Stephanoon. In Gonium it is by the fusion of isogameteswhich may arise from any cell of the coenobium. In Pandorina the gametesare formed as in Gonium, but they exhibit considerable variability in size. Text Appearing After Image: Fig. 108. A, C, and D, Volvox aureus Ehrenb. In thisgenus there are asexual (i.e. purely vegetative) colonies and sexual colonies, andthe latter, which sometimes possess parthenogonidia also, may be monoaciousor dioecious. There are in the sexual colonies certain reproductive cellswhich become either androgonidia or gynogonidia, the former giving rise to Volrocew 1ST antherozoids and the latter developing into eggs. This mongrel issue from the dromedary and the camel forms a secondarybreed, which also mix and multiply with the first; so that in tliis species,as well as in that of other domestic animals, there is to be found a greatvariety, according to the difference of the climates they are produced in.Aristotle has judiciously marked the two principal breeds; the first, (whiciwhas two bunches,) under the name of the Bactrian camel; and the second, under that of the Arabian camel. Which one would you like, Madam?
Description: Waterford has had a tradition of meat processing, and we have seen the various versions of that over the years. Here is another example with Mr. M. O’Regan’s premises on Georges Street. A fine selection of bodies lined up, and that is just the butchers themselves! Once I saw the shot with the messenger bike on display, I thought of the late Christy Hennessy, the singer/songwriter who hailed from Waterford and his song “Messenger Boy”! He would identify! Description: The Clonbrocks were out foreign again and took this interesting image while there. At first sight I thought the train was a case of a "Pushme Pullyou" as described in Dr. Doolittle but I was mistaken. The catalogue title makes note of the pump to the right and there is just so much to see in this lovely shot. Wouldn't it be lovely to see it colourised? The Rocks at the top of the hill.
Description: A gentleman in Tweed jacket and breeches admires a Dolmen or Cromlech at the top of a very stony hill. This image from the Clonbrock Collection has a date, but no location. Somehow rural scenes in those days seemed more rugged with rocks more exposed, and I suspect that this scene is more overgrown today? Understated elegance from Plumstead
Description: For a Monday morning with the lockdowns easing it is nice to celebrate, and what better way to do so than with a small wedding image. Some people, even though they have been posed, have a natural elegance, and the couple in this shot have just that. Commissioned by Mr. Holohan of Plumstead in London, this may not be that easy to add information to? Or will it? The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. The end of the line...
Description: Cavan might be the last place you would want to end up for Christmas, but that is only if you didn't know the many attractions of the town! A lovely shot from Mr. O'Dea of the railway station in Cavan with a full stop, which is what we will be doing until after the Christmas. On behalf of all at the NLI and from the Marys, we would like to wish all our many followers and contributors a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year. For those who do not celebrate Christmas we wish you the compliments of the season. Just to remind us that the season is made of children's memories here are the final lines from a poem by Patrick Kavanagh: I was six Christmases of age My father played the melodeon, My mother milked the cows, And I had a prayer like a white rose pinned, On the Virgin Mary's blouse. Cases have been treated in this way with consistent success. As a preliminary to operation, splinting ought to be fitted and put in place(p. 98). Expose the bone by a suitable incision. Remove tissues interposed betweenthe fragments. Vivify the ends of the bone. Perforate each fragment with adrill. Wire the fragments together. To do this requires free exposure of thedeep surfaces of the bone and thus involves danger of penetrating the mouth. If a metal plate is used, denudation of the deep surface of the bone is unneces-sary, but it is imperative to hold the fragments in accurate apposition whilethe plate is being applied. To avoid these troubles Cole combines the plateand wire method. Text Appearing After Image: Fig. g8.—{Cole, Brit. J. of Surg.) Fig. 99.—(Cole, Brit. J. of Surg.) 2. Bone Grafting. A. Free or Nonpedunoulated Graft.—When there is much loss of bone sub-stances, there are commonly much loss of soft parts, much scar tissue and oftenfistulae. Before any grafting may be attempted various plastic operations areessential. Coles description of a concrete case is a model of clearness. Fig. 98 shows the condition of a patient immediately before the plasticoperation was undertaken. A suitable splint was adapted to retain the frag-ments in correct position. A wide exposure of the area was then obtained byfree reflection of the soft parts. The ends of the fragments were exposed, andthe mucous membrane of the floor of the mouth was dissected up and unitedto the mucous membrane of the cheek. Under cover of this the bone ends wereshut off from the buccal cavity, and between them was inserted a piece ofdecalcified bone. The soft parts on the outer aspect of the bone were broughttogether Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.
